LeagueArtz Many events are set up for 2017 – a visit
to the Metropolitan Archives (which includes our LJW papers), a visit to Amazon Distribution Centre (just how do parcels get to us so quickly), St Bride's Foundation – an exhibition of printing and many more. Look at your next programme and book as soon as possible as many events have a limited number of people who can attend.
Anyone who would be interested in
joining the committee please contact me on [email protected].
Surrey LJW have lots of cutlery, china and glass that was used for functions. This is now not needed and we wondered if any other group could use it.
Council Forum The Council Forum is held three times a year. This is where important issues, with regard to the League, are discussed. Chairmen, Welfare Officers, Treasurers and other interested parties are welcome to attend and, in particular, we welcome those of you who want to find out about the workings of the League and are interested in being more involved. Next year, we will celebrate our 75th anniversary and we want to make it special. We need to start planning now for some exciting and unusual events. To this end, would you ask your members (and families) if they have attended a special event and would like us to investigate on behalf of the League, a particular idea for a function, a burning desire for us to investigate a new welfare project, a pet project they would like us to take up or maybe an event we have had in the past and you would like us to repeat. This is where to bring all your ideas so that they can be discussed The next meeting will be on Monday, 20th March 2017 at ORT House. Coffee will be served at 10.30 am and the meeting usually finishes at 1 pm when there will be a sandwich lunch. For security reasons, Head Office must be informed of all the names of all members attending.

The League held a
Human Rights Day Seminar chaired by Gillian
Gold, ICJW Vice President UK, on Monday,
12th December 2016. The guest speaker was
Anthony Lester QC, Baron Lester of Herne Hill,
who has a distinguished record of being
instrumental in human rights legislation,
developing policies on race relations, sex
discrimination and human rights.
The event began with a message sent from
Robyn Lenn, ICJW World President, to all
affiliates, read by Gillian Gold.
Penelope Conway, ICJW Chair of the Status of
Women Committee, asked members present
to help in the fight against trafficking. Many
members of the League of Jewish Women
only buy chocolate which has been produced
without slave labour and Penelope urged us
to extend this to tea and coffee ensuring that
the product had not been picked by children
who have been trafficked.
To take this further, she asked that we check
the supply chain of any clothing we buy by
looking at the company website. We can now
download the Stop App which enables people
to report something, anonymously, that they
think is not right and that we should look
closely at the nail bars, hotels and car washes
we use to ensure that the staff are there of
their own free will.
Lord Lester spoke about his book “Five Ideas
to Fight For” How our freedom is under threat
and why it matters.

Have you told your family and friends about LJWonline. This is
our newest group and we need your help to expand and cover all areas in the UK. It was initially aimed at women in their 30s and 40s but anyone can join in their conversations. All they need to do is contact [email protected] to find out more about this group. The first group is based in Loughton, Essex and they are volunteering and meeting socially. The aim is that women will meet in their local areas and devise their own interests and volunteering opportunities. They are conversing via Facebook, which is a closed page, but when they join the League they will be welcome to take part. It is vital that we encourage our younger women to join the League so that we can look to the future of doing what we do best – Helping all communities when help is needed.
There will be no ‘In our League’ in April as there will be the annual mail out containing ‘In Contact’ - a review of 2016
Group Chairman - Please inform members, who do not have access to the
internet, that we can send them information by post at a cost of
£10 per annum to cover printing and postage.
