Workshop on Findings in Japan

54 Indian students with various hopes and feelings participated in the JENESYS

Programme, which was held in Japan for ten days. The Programme provided school visit,

home stay program and other interactions with Japanese students and people, in which

the Indian students learned traditional Japanese culture and environmental efforts in

Japan. To wrap up the Programme, on 19 May, sessions entitled “Workshop on Findings

in Japan” were held by Nagano, Hiroshima and Saga groups respectively.

The Workshop was designed to achieve the following points.

① To make visiting students realize their findings(knowledge/awareness) by putting their

impressions at a level beneath their awareness into words

② To facilitate the visiting students retaining their acquired findings

(knowledge/awareness) and keeping the motivation for mutual understandings

③ To intensify their findings (knowledge/awareness) individually by sharing and

exchanging findings with others

④ Finally, to create a message from discussed findings in each group, with which they will

be able to contribute to deepening mutual understandings between Japan and India in

the future

Each group vigorously exchanged their frank opinions in the Workshop, which provided

opportunities for the visiting students to intensify mutual understandings between Japan

and India.

Workshop Reports are on the following pages.

Workshop Report

Date:22/06/2008 Group:INDIA 4th Batch NARA Group

I. Findings about Japan

(Category:Findings from People)

・Punctuality ・Helpful ・Efficiency ・Practical use of space

・Self-discipline ・Well prepared ・Hard working

・Fond of Indian culture ・Brilliant in science and technology

(Category:Findings from Things)

・Beautiful and ancient temples ・Wooden homes

・Highly advanced ・World class provisions

・Make things interesting

(Category:Findings from Others)

・Cleanliness ・Environment friendly area ・Expensive

・Early lunch and Dinner

(Others)

Some of us narrated our personal experiences in India and Japan which are related.

We also mentioned somethings we liked about Japan (esp. Tokyo) eg; peoples shoes,

fashionable clothes.

II. Details of Discussion

・ Punctuality – They always follow the time and set off for their best before time. Eg; our

reporting time was always 15 mins before check-out or leaving time.

・ Helpful – They go out of their way and to the max extent possible to help us. Eg; When

Vinayak wanted a Shamisen; Chieko san was ready with the total information in 15 mins.

・ Efficiency – Maximum output from minimum input. Eg; Flush at Tenri Kanko Hotel used

the washbasin water as the flush water.

・ Practical utilisation of space – Dining hall in kitchen and drawing room is used as

bedroom in the night.

・ Self discipline – Traffic rules are maintained and obeyed all the time but students are not

so disciplined. Probably need to mature and learn.

・ Well prepared – Japanese think of all the possible situations and prepare for all of them.

Eg; Sarah san had cough syrup ready for Ilena’s throat.

・ Hard working – Japanese are willing to work hard. Examples: (for) built such buildings

and technological advancements are not possible if they are not hard working. (Against)-

use too many electronic gadgets and equipments.

・ Fond of Indian Culture – They respect Indian culture and have even picked it up

because of their likingness for it.

・ Beautiful and Ancient Temples – Japanese temples are simpler than Indian ones and

they are maintained better. Also a temple here is peaceful and calm unlike the one in

India.

・ World Class provisions – Schools are really good and each one of them has an

excellent standard. So people do not need to travel long hours to reach their destination.

Page 9: Implementation Report - JICEsv2.jice.org/jenesys/pdf/houkoku/07India_4.pdf · Fourth Batch of Students from India Implementation Report (17th June ... INDIA / 4th Batch ... The member

・ Cleanliness – The Japanese have always emphasised on cleanliness in every aspect of

their lives. They believe that different places have different levels of cleanliness. Eg;

Removing shoes while getting inside house; using different shoes while entering the

washroom.

・ Environment friendly areas – They clean the smoke before releasing it into the

environment (at the incineration plant). Also in the Sharp memorial hall we saw how the

waste water was treated and then dumped into the water body.

・ Expensive – All Japanese products are very expensive, there is a high standard of living

in and around Tokyo. Possible reason could be high tax and also better quality.

・ Early lunch and Dinner – Japanese have their dinner and lunch very early, which is good

because it gives the body enough time to digest their dinner. Could be one of the

reasons why they are thin.

・ All point were brought up and discussed properly.

・ All point had to have personal examples to support them

・ Others were also asked how they felt about the point

・ Similarities and dissimilarities were discussed with respect to Indian Society.

・ Exceptions were discussed if found and explained upon.

III. Conclusion

・ Japanese culture has the right mix of traditional elements and technological

advancements.

・ Practicality is what Indian society should have more of

・ Japanese Society is clean without dirty politics or corruption which reflects in the

advancement of the country.

・ Japanese people have got a lot of self-determination and self-disciplined which is why

they obey traffic rules and there is low crime rate.

・ Most of all we learnt that THE CHANGE STARTS WITH US!!

I. Findings about Japan

(Category:People of Japan)

The Japanese people are extremely hardworking and dedicated. Their humility and affection

to all people is known all over the world. The students of Kyoto group carry back with there

the love, punctuality and organization of Japanese society.

(Category:Infrastructure of Japan)

Highly advanced technology as observed by us in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. Extremely

efficient and well-managed transport and communication especially use of bullet trains.

(Category:Traditions of Japan)

Kyoto Group experienced tea ceremony of Japan and found it extremely interesting. The visit

to Fujinomori Shrine made us and again aware of the practices and beauty of the Japanese

culture.

(Category:Kyoto)

Kyoto – a blend of ancient and modern society of Japan is an amazing place – both in its

aesthetic beauty and people.

II. Details of Discussion (Topic: Experiences in Japan)

The member students of JENESYS group participated in the group discussion and shared

their observations and experience. It was a very enlightening interchange. All the students

expressed their views about their own host families and observations. We categorised our

discussion into three parts – People, Infrastructure and Others and used a ‘Tree

Presentation.’

III. Conclusion

‘Kyoto group’ concludes that Japan’s management and utilization of the resources available is

very efficient. The method of ‘Reuse and Recycle’ is again a demonstration of the

environmental awareness and responsibility of Japanese people.

(Category:Others)

Country blessed with natural beauty

Enthusiasm of people to know about Indian culture

II. Details of Discussion

We discussed briefly about the above findings. The economic development of Hiroshima is

really commendable even after the Atom Bomb Attack. The punctuality of the Japanese

people was shown in the fact that every programme began on time no matter what situations

have been. We were also really impressed by the love of the people towards their country.

III. Conclusion

Japan’s development, especially that of Hiroshima after the Atom bomb attack is truly

commendable. We Indians must also inculcate in us this kind of hard work and dedication to

reach where Japan is today. We were also pleasantly surprised by the similarity in the 2

countries in upholding their traditional values and practising them. However a lot of cultural

differences do exist between the two countries which we hope we have bridged to some

extent through this student exchange programme.

Indian Students’ Comments

<Nara Group>

○ Through this program I was able to understand more about Japanese culture and

history. I also got an idea of the scope of improvement in our country. I was able to find

out the secret behind Japan's success in technological field and I understood the

reason behind their long life-span. I also got an idea how to make the waste useful in an

environmentally friendly manner. I was able to understand how to gain maximum

success by minimum input. So, on the whole this program was a great success and I

request to organize more similar programs.

○ My impression of the programme was pretty good. We had a wonderful experience. I

just wish we could’ve eaten Japanese food and seen more of the lives of ‘children’ in

Japan. I think that would’ve benefited us further. Overall it was a wonderful experiences,

and I am honoured that I was chosen for it. The people were extremely polite and

always ready to help. I think there’s a lot that we can learn from Japanese culture,

people and lifestyles! For example, punctuality, cleanliness, politeness, tolerance,

patience and so on. This was a very enlightening experience.

○ Having been chosen for the JENESYS programme was an unexpected opportunity for

all of us. We visited Japan with barely any knowledge about it and its people. All of us

had some anxieties but were relieved of them when out Japanese hosts received us

with the warmest welcome. I, personally, have lived my dream of visiting this

mysterious country. I was able to learn a lot of things and now I have a clear idea of the

lifestyle of a Japanese. I specially enjoyed the homestay programme where I made a

Japanese mother and father. Throughout this programme everyone has been very kind

and helpful to us. This has made me to respect the Japanese people. I wish to share

this wonderful experience of mine with all of my friends and relatives in India. I am sure

they are anxiously waiting for it as well.

<Kyoto Group>

○ Japan is very developed and culture rich country. There is very fast and high technology.

Japanese people are also very kind and friendly. They are very hard worker. They didn’t

think about the level of work, any work they do with there is heart. I like it very much.

Most of I like behaviors of Japanese people. Thank you for staying me here.

○ Through this program, I found that Japan is very beautiful country. It is more beautiful

than our imagination. Japan is economically developed and science and technology is

advanced. This program build the foundation for international cooperation among Asian

students. It also allow the participants to understand well about Japan. Last, I only want

to write that - Thank you Japan and thank you JENESYS.

○ JENESYS programme is the best to form a friendly relation between India and Japan.

India or any other countries student can make a relation of parents in Japan after the

Indian (their) parents.

○ It is an amazing program. It’s like a beautiful song written by the hands of God. I extend

my heart-filled gratitude to the organizers of this programme and would further like to

encourage them to give this opportunities to students to experience the things we have

experience or more. And that we’ll really bring a good/ positive result, as it really

changed me. Thank you so much. I’m sorry for not finding out the appropriate word to

thank you all.

○ JENESYS programme is a very good and excellent platform for those who want to have

more and more knowledge about Japanese technology and business. I am a

commerce student and by visiting Japan through this programme, I have decided to

have further studies in Japan. May be I would be able to complete this aim. It would be

very good opportunity for me. This programme should go on for a long time so that a

great deal of people would be able to know about Japan very well. So please give us

opportunity to study in Japanese universities.

<Hiroshima Group>

○ I really had the best time of my life during this programme. Not only has it a tremendous

learning experience, it was also a lot of fun. Through this programme I learnt how to be

more outward and open with people whom I don’t know. It has really helped me boost

my confidence level in public. I really had some doubts whether I would be able to

mingle with my host family or not but after having met them all those apprehensions

seemed so baseless. Not only did they take care of me but also treated me like their

own family members which was a great feeling. I don’t think I will ever forget the love

and affection they have showed upon me and I have also developed a strong sense of

attachment with them. In this programme not only have I made friends in Japan but also

a lot of friends from different parts of India and am really thankful to JENESYS for it.

○ I thank the JICE authorities from the bottom of my heart for giving me this wonderful

opportunity to visit well-developed Japan. Japan is exclusively well and good in every

aspect. But people being so intellectual cannot speak English. Even then they are the

best and uncomparble with other nations. I learnt to be punctual, to be adhere to the

country’s rules and regulation, to be always polite and truthful. I decided to share my

experiences with people of my country. I want to maintain the peaceful relations with

Japan and other countries. Let us all seek for the World Peace and Unity and Ultimately

Prosperous Earth in the future.

○ The programme is very meaningful because I got an opportunity to know about

Japanese way of living, their culture and simultaneously I could share my feelings with

them. It helps a lot in developing good relations between India and Japan. The

message from Hiroshima is quite worthy. I understood the importance of peace. I could

see the new technology advancing in Japan with huge skyscapes, very big plants, etc.

Finally I could say that each and every programme was worthwhile a lot.

○ So good programme. Really this helps in creating cooperation between Asian countries.

This is a great opportunity for talenties of middle class family (because for them to

reach and learn a foreign country is still an imagination). Hats up to JICE and Japan. I

pray god that this kind of programme should continue for ever.
