Founded in 2008, this organization consists of Jenderal Soedirman University's Medical Students who are concerned with environmental and humanity issues. Although the members of Osipital are medical students, we are commited to giving assistance to both medical and non-medical issues, as long as the issues are still compatible with Osipital's vision and mission. Osipital was established in order to facilitate the students to implement their functions as the agents of community services. Osipital's initial establishment was focused in giving the best contribution in the field of emergency, disaster, conservation, rescue, and humanitarian. Members of Osipital are well-trained in helping people under any possible conditions. Several programs have been conducted by Osipital, which include Disaster Simulation, Rescue Training Programs, and Plants Conservation. Osipital also has social programs such as social charity programs, fund-raising events, and others.Group Activity Report: Provide group activity report introducting actual programs/projects conducted in order to tackle the issues of concerning post-disaster reconstruction, disaster preparedness, engaged in children, handicapped & elderly care, in deal with LGBT issues, womens empowerment, or others (400 words maximum)Osipital was founded in Purwokerto, Central Java, a place surrounded by highlands, sea, and volcanic mountain. This area also lies on unstable earth plates that can collide each other any time. Therefore, natural disaster threats have become neverending problems for the local governments. Landslides, tsunamis, gas poisonings, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes, are several local threats that are in need of attention. In 2010, Mt. Merapi erupted, causing the dead of hundreds and forced thousands to evacuate. Two years ago, carbon dioxide gas poisoning happened in Dieng, resulting in a considerable amount of economic and health casualties. Next, in our area lies Mt. Slamet, the biggest active volcanic mountain in Java island which has been showing an increasing volcanic activities. Therefore, local disaster prevention, preparedness, and management systems are in need of significant improvement. Unfortunately, however, Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency shows a little competence regarding disaster-related issues; their human capitals do not have adequate skills to deal with emergency situations. Thus, Osipital was founded in order to overcome such matters. Being a local environmental-humanitarian organization, Osipital is dedicated to helping people in need throughout Central Java area and its wider area. Our services, which are focused on communities that are at the risk of natural hazards, including raising the awareness on natural disasters, providing natural disasters relief, and taking part in natural disasters mitigation. Members of Osipital had also volunteered in aiding the victims of some natural disasters events, such as Mt. Merapi eruption, Dieng carbon dioxide gas poisoning, West Java flood, Tasikmalaya tsunami, and some landslides accidents. Osipital also helped in distributing financial aid for several national disasters, such as Mentawai tsunami, Tasikmalaya tsunami, Mt. Merapi eruption.

Survivors of the natural disasters might develop Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), defined as a set of symptoms that are result of experiencing, witnessing, or participating in an overwhelmingly traumatic (frightening) event. Children have a higher prevalence to develop such disorder, and that is the reason, we try to help creating an environment that will help them reduce their stress level. Osipital, in coordination with other public and private sectors, provide some activities that can help the children cope with their trauma, such as sports, small competitions, and other entertaining activities. Osipital also provides special trainings, motivation-building sessions, and regular medical check-ups for disabled individuals who are in risk of losing their jobs and elderly who are in need of medical care.

* The Group Leader putted first in the Group Name's Column

Group Motivation in Joining the Competition (200 words maximum)Indonesia had experienced numerous natural disaster threats with the number of casualties reaches more than 600.000 people per year. As an archipelago vulnerable to disasters, Indonesia needs to improve its disaster preparedness and emergency readiness systems. Its a big challenge, because this country consists of approximately 238 million people which scattered in 17.500 islands, and all of them are in need of high lever disaster preparedness systems. Therefore, developing local communities for disaster management is essential. Osipital is one of the local organization which aims to overcome that challenge. Enlisting in this programs one of our many efforts to realize our goal and fulfill our ambition in developing our country's disaster management. We intend to spread our thoughts about the role of youths in disaster risk reduction, so, in the future, we can spread the idea that youths are able to enhance disaster resilience at their own hometown. Moreover, were medical students who are obliged and responsible to take care of others. Doctors and paramedics have responsibility to try their best in treating their patients, both in emergency or not-emergency situations. Therefore, joining this program is a perfect way for us to learn and train to become future ideal doctors. What contribution that the group able to give after joining the trip to Japan? how do you aim to improve your programs using your experience in Japan? Please specify how your trip and learning there will directly contribute to your activities for the communities (Fellow students, neighborhood, recipients of your programs, etc) ? (750 words maximum)As a country which located on the Ring of Fire, cities in Indonesia are very prone to natural disasters. Some of the recorded incidents include great tsunami of Aceh which happened in 2004, floods in Wasior in 2010, and volcanic eruption of Mt. Merapi in 2010. In fact, 150 out of 497 municipalities and regencies in Indonesia are under the threat of tsunamis. This condition is shared with another Asia's archipelago: Japan. Japan is one of the countries that are heavily affected by natural disasters, and two out of the five most expensive natural disasters in history have occured in Japan. One example was a massive destruction that hit Japan in 2011, following 9 richter scale-earthquake and tsunami. As many as 15.769 people were killed and 4.227 others were missing. Economic loss caused by the disasters was 220 billion U.S. dollars or 3.4 percent of Japan's Gross Domestic Product. Japan has also been the site of some of the 10 worst natural disasters of 21st century. There are various types of natural disasters in Japan that include stsunamis, flood, typhoons, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. This country has gone through many years of natural disaster, affecting its economy, development, and social life. The good thing we can learn from Japan is how its people are fully aware that they lived under the constant threat of deadly natural disasters. A wise understanding of that situation is commonly held by regional governments when developing cities, and of course, when reacting to natural disasters. The first thing they did when disaster hit was recognizing the barriers of communication and coordination which might exist, and, afterthat, they organized a quick massive response that also involved private sectors, non-governmental organizations, communities, volunteers, and individuals. They were very clear on what was needed, what wasn't needed, and what could be accepted. Indonesia should witness how the city emergency system worked effectively during the powerful earthquake and tsunamis shook Japan, and how could buildings in cities prove to resist the earthquake and infrastructure look solid when the tsunami struck. In post-disaster survival, we could see how routine earthquake simulation drills had result in citizens well-prepared physically and mentally for an earthquake. We could observe how effective such disaster awareness that are developed through curriculum on disaster management from the primary to the university level, while disaster management producers are disseminated into all levels of society, to make people know exactly what to do, when to save themselves, and where to go to find evacuation sites as well as how to survive. Lesson learned from cities in Japan are that they were prepared in a time of disaster, for nobody knows exactly when a disaster will strike. Learning from Japan will be a vital contribution to preparing Indonesia citizens to meet the challenges of disasterk risk where a natural hazard can trigger a chain of catasthropic events. We could spread such valuable ideas to our governments, students, and societies. Our governmens, for example, could benefit from the idea facilitating cooperation between regional, national, and parties, so they would be able to develop an enhanced disaster management systems and plans. Therefore, being able to learn from a country that possess such advanced disaster management systems would give our country a great insight on developing disaster risk and awareness systems. Osipital consists of university students, the agents of change that devote ourselves in bringing a better condition toward the world and its people. We have chances to identify things that can be improved. We have opportunities to explore any ideas with other students that are capable to put our ideas into real actions. After joining this program, we wish, Osipital could make a strategic regional risk reduction program which could improve our society's disaster preparedness and awareness. Members of Osipital have a potential capability to supply any essential disaster response skills, such as conducting condugt light search, initiating rescue activities, and providing effective treatment of wounded survivors. With our partnership with PTBMMKI (Center of Indonesian Medical Students concerning in Medicine Assistance), we could share our experiences and knowledge about proper disaster management through some trainngs or workshops.

Briefly explain about yourself, including your background, personality, motivation in joining the competition, as well as your volunteer / internship / professional experience (500 words maximum)My name is Khoirur Rijal Ashsholih, Im in 4th grade medical student of Jenderal Soedirman University. I was born with my parents background as teachers in Rembang, Central Java. I didnt know much about disaster, until tsunami disaster devastated Aceh in 2004. I also had experienced while earthquake was hitting Yogyakarta, because of although Yogyakarta is far enough from my place, Rembang was still getting the bad impact. Then, I realized that my country is a disaster supermarket, because there were so many disasters happened here. Almost all kind of disasters can be found in my country. Volcanic eruption of Mt. Merapi, that is being the activist mountain in the world. Also, earthquakes, landslides, floods, typhoons, and many others that seems being the forever threats for the society. And I think, we dont have good disaster management systems yet. Im now studying in Purwokerto, which lies in some ring of potential disaster. Near this pleace, lies Mt. Selamet, which is the highest volcanic mountain in Central Java, with its active volcanic activities that is increasing recently. I witnessed that Japan has a fast response in disaster management. Comparing with Indonesia's disaster management systems, I still dont see that the system is as well as in Japan's. I saw here, people were waiting for government help, and I think our government was too slow to response and too late to make a rapid recovery. The disaster management system here is still focusing in rehabilitative and curative care, because preventive care is extremely difficult to our government. So, whats wrong? Those circumstances made me to join Osipital since my first grade. I also interest in disaster issues and active in the disaster workshops, disaster management trainings, and disaster simulations. I have joined in Dieng carbon dioxide gas poisoning relief team, and I think dedicating my life as a volunteer is great. I also have conducted disaster simulation and mitigation of Dieng earthquake for people there. In life, we have many chances to help people. I joined in the national organization called as "Center of Indonesian Medical Students concerning in Medicine Assistance", and worked as Disaster Prevention Staff. Id like to take part in this study trip, because I want to learn more deeply about disaster management systems in other country that have a lot of disaster as like in Indonesia. I want to try to apply the same systems here, in my hometown, in my country, so it can make me give benefits to other people.

Why do you think you should be selected? You can freely explain about your dreams, future, or anything (500 words maximum)I am a medical student who is currently studying in Purwokerto, Banyumas, Central Java. This place is located near Mt. Slamet, and Dieng Plateu. I ever imagine that if Mt. Slamet erupts, it's too near from people residence, and will make a very potential catastrophe event. If you search dieng plateau tragedy, you can find about Sinila tragedy. That time, Sinila crater erupted poisoning gas that killed 149 people in February 20th, 1979. Not so long ago, in 2010, Timbang crater showed increasing activity and make people worried. It erupted carbon dioxide poisoning gas, that had made hundreds people there left their houses to seek saver place. Accompanying by Pemalang rescue team, I joined as a volunteer to that disaster. From that time, I started to curious about disasters, volunteers, helping people, and others. Some months ago, medical students from Japan have visited my school. We talked about disaster, focused on what they did, and what we did. And I thought we have the same problems. Our country is vulnerable from disasters, as similar as Japan. Disasters could happen any time and any where, and I think our people should be trained to be ready to face the disasters. From 2011, I joined national community in first aid and disaster team. I worked as a disaster prevention staff there. In this organization, I could share my experience to all of my friends, medical students all over Indonesia. I intended to share what I know because I hope they can share my experiences towards their people in their own region. I also want to share my experiences in my country, perhaps in national disaster workshops that are held periodically in my country. I will be very grateful if I will be selected in this program. I have a serious commitment in this program. I am honest, and hard worker. And I think I will fullfil your expectations if I will be enlisted in this program.

Briefly explain about yourself, including your background, personality, motivation in joining the competition, as well as your volunteer / internship / professional experience (500 words maximum)My name is Muhammad Cahya Riadi Sucipto, called as Cahya. I am 20 years old now, was born as the second child in my family which settles in Palembang, South Sumatera. My hobby is doing exercises, sports, and martial arts, especially "karate", an Asian system of unarmed combat using the hands and feet to deliver and block blows. I love karate since I was a 7 years-old-child, and had attended both regional and national competitions. I ever won in national competition, got a bronze medal as the award. Now, I am a student in Jenderal Soedirman University, majoring in Medicine, and was chosen to be a lecturers' assistant of Pharmacology Laboratory. I am a final year student now, with so many final year project I have to overcome. Yet, I'm still active in karate and sometimes get a chance to join the karate competition for university students. I also active in Osipital, and get the opportunity to be the president in it for a year. I do really enjoy my busy activity, and join in Osipital is becoming an interesting part in my life. Osipital is engaged in mostly all the humanity aspects, that was the reason why I was interesting to take part. Osipital teaches me how to survive and help as many as people in any conditions, good or bad ones. Osipital also gives me so many friends and families, since my "real family" is separated by oceans and islands. My friends came from a lot of regions in Indonesia, and we met in some environmental-humanitarian events, such as disaster managements training and workshops, national jambore, fund-raising projects, and many more. With my friends, we get so much experience volunteering in some natural disasters in Indonesia. I was impressed with those experiences, that we all have gifts that we can use to benefit someone who has less.Taking part in disaster managements teams is challenging yet inspired for me, teaches me how time is very precious and important. Saving human lives is my long-life passion, and joining this program is a proof how serious I am to achieve my passion. I want to increase my knowledge about emergency rescue and disaster managements. As I know, Japan is a developed country, and the interesting part about Japan for me is how Japan solve the disaster problem with professionality. When tsunami attacked japan, Japan rescue team was doing rapidly action to save the victims as much as they could. And aftermath, when the disaster went away, Japan run the well-planned recovery plan actions. One thing that is caught in my eye is how the government intended to make visible reconstruction progress and accelerate resettlement of those left homeless. I really long to exchange my taught about how I can apply a better disaster managements in my society, with the others who may face the same problems with me.

Why do you think you should be selected? You can freely explain about your dreams, future, or anything (500 words maximum)I am a long life learner, and I will be very excited if I get a chance to learn a new thing. I love a balance of living and learning. There is great pleasure in learning for the sake of learning. But there is even greater fulfillment in applying what you learn in ways that improve your life and the lives of others. In my opinion, having the freedom to spend days in self-development and acquiring knowledge and new skills would be decadent beyond measure. Thus, I will be very happy if I was selected in this program. I will try to commit with this program and its purposes, I will try to follow all of the program's activities and will complete all vision and mission of this program with my very best efforts. I will finish my duties and responsibilities in this program. I am very serious to join in this program, because I believe in the future, this experience will be useful for me. I believe that this program making me getting new experiences, learning new knowledge in the form of disaster managements, and having a precious opportunity to meet new people who have a different culture, different language, different system about disaster management in their regions. For me, meeting a new person with different background is not my first experience, because in my organisation I must have this skills to give a lot of benefit for my self and my organisation. I often meet new person from another region. With this program, I wish I have a lot of knowledge about disaster management in Japan. I will get a chance to explore my thoughts in the field of disaster and emergency. With this chance, I wish I can share my experience to my organisation, my colleges, and my friends along my country. I think this experience will be very useful and applicable in Indonesia which has many kind of natural disasters. My expectation are not only me and my community getting the skills and knowledge about disaster management systems but also my friends are able to know about them. I want the volunteers need to know how the good disaster management systems are. On the other hand, I have a dream. After I finish my bachelor degree, I want to continue my study in Japan and become an advance in medical emergency field. So, with this experience, I wish thisexperience will help me to achieve my goals in the future.

Participant of Summer School on Global Health, University of Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands, 2012 2. Ambassador of One Young World Summit, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, The United States of America, 2012

Briefly explain about yourself, including your background, personality, motivation in joining the competition, as well as your volunteer / internship / professional experience (500 words maximum)As a daughter of a man working in disaster management field, I have some experiences in some disaster awareness, disaster preparedness, and disaster recovery programs. I learnt so many things from my father, mostly about how should we react and respond to disaster. Some experiences I will never forget were when I had been involved as a volunteer in Yogyakarta's Earthquake Relief Teams in the middle of 2006 and Merapi Eruptions Recovery Teams in the end of 2010. I helped the victims and gave assistance to them to relieve. By joining such programs let me draw a conclusion that disaster management systems in my country is still not good enough. It is very pathetic, because Indonesia is well-known as one of the most disaster prone countries in the world. Over the past 20 years, Indonesia has been hit by more than 200 natural disasters, affecting numerous damages. However, unfortunately, significant gaps still exist to allert communities to disasters risks and hazards. When I got the opportunity to join summer school in Groningen, Netherlands, I once gave my presentation about the lacks of disaster managements in Indonesia and emphasizing how young people in Indonesia have potential powers to be involved in it. I believe that young people like me and my friends have the chance to perform well when they are involved in disaster preparadness and planning. Involving young people in disaster management can help them learn topics that affect their lives while at the same time gaining hands-on experience designed to equip them become better leaders for future. Undoubtely, young people have their unique role and the value they can provide as innovators, inter-cultural ambassadors, peer-to-peer facilitators, community mobilizers, and advocates for vulnerable people. I guarantee the communities will become safer and more resilient to disasters by making a genuine partnership with young people. Moreover, as a medical student, I have the urge to implement the criteria of "five-stars doctor" principal in my daily life, in every condition I could meet. I must learn to have a good capability as a communicator, decision-making, care provider, community leader, and manager to fulfill the criterias of ideal doctor. Relating to disaster, I have passions to play a large role in tending to the wounded and the ill who were left in a catastrophe's wake. I want to rapidly present in a place where disaster struck and be able to respond quickly. Thus, I do believe that I can catch my passion if I am trained and developed well through this program.

Why do you think you should be selected? You can freely explain about your dreams, future, or anything (500 words maximum)Since I was in Senior High School, I was interested in society problem, especially about how people facing their health problem. I have believed that health is an important factor in life. All human activities in the world will run well if they are stated in a good health framework. This circumstances stimulated me to attend Medicine and Health Sciences Faculty, majoring in Medicine. It's my golden bridge to pursue my dreams, being a beneficial human for others. I want to give benefit as much as I could provide for the world, especially for Indonesia society, the country where I belong to. My short-time goal is becoming an oncologist, a doctor who specializes in treating diseases related to tumours, cancers, neoplasms, and a malignant cell. I often imagine that cancers are just as same as disasters. They are coming unpredictably and can happen at any time and to anyone. They may be natural, man-made, or both. They can result in damages, disabilities, and deaths. They are deadly and dangerous. But sadly, many people suffers from it. I am a passionate woman, was born to be futuristic and well-prepared person. I am a hardworking individual who pays very serious attention to my studies. Based on "The Four Temperaments", I am enganged to the choleric one. I am an active student who spends my leisure time to do many positive activities. I was active in the students senate for two years, some non-profit organizations, and became the coordinator of lecturers' assistant in Anatomical Pathology Department. Also, I ever joined in medical research teams and was chosen to be the head of some researches. I am strong willed, self-sufficient, independent, and not discouraged easily. Those circumstances exudes me with high confidence to run well everything I have to run. But, nobody is perfect. I also have negative traits that can affect me being bossy, impatient, quick tempered, and a little impetuous. We don't need to be an expert to be a volunteer. The important things is to volunteer doing something we love. I love medical world, and this is the place where the rest of my life will be dedicated for. Working in medical field give me the enormous privilege of touching and changing people's life and in my opinion, there is not a better way of spending my time than helping other people as long as possible, as many as possible. Nothing ever beats the unspokeable feeling after we help the less fortunate people around us. Helping the people will not only give the benefits to the person we help, but we ourselves will be changed in ways that are unmeasurable. This program aims to spread the knowledge related to disaster to create consciousness about disaster to the youths. It is really fit with my passion to help others in disaster concepts. Given this opportunity, I am confident that my experience and personable disposition would make me as one of the most suitable candidate to be involved in this program.

Briefly explain about yourself, including your background, personality, motivation in joining the competition, as well as your volunteer / internship / professional experience (500 words maximum)I am Intan, medical student of Jenderal Soedirman University. I would like to express my strong interest for taking part in this programme. As a medical student, I hope I could help disaster victims. People keep thinking that doctor usually do the curative and rehabilitative things for the people. But it seems interesting for me to also learn about the prevention and early detection systems of disasters. I was born and raised in Yogyakarta, the city where the massive earthquake happened in 2006 and the eruption of Mt. Merapi in 2010. Those bad disasters resulted in a lot of victims and material casualties. I heard a lot of sad news from friends, relatives, or neighbors. Post-disaster recovery also took time, and a big amount of money. From here I inspired to help those people who were affected by the disasters, and very interested to know how the effective prevention or early detection systems can reduce the bad impact of the disasters. I heard this program from my classmate, and I thought this is a good opportunity for me and my friends to enhance our knowledge and ability in the prevention and management of disasters. I hope after I get the valuable trainings in this program, I could share the ideas and implement them in a disaster-prone communities. I have a good adaption in everywhere I am. When I went to the elementary school, I had to move to the new place following my parents. People said that move to the another new place would be a little bit challenging, but it never came to me. I didn't meet any problems with my new friends or neighbors and still could be one of the best students there. After graduated from elementary school, I continued my study in one of the best Junior High Schools in Yogyakarta. That school is located in the center of Yogyakarta municipality. Basically I came from the village, and went to that school needed me to adapt to the urban communities. And again, I can do it well and rapidly. Three years passed, and I had succesfully graduated from that school with a very good score, brought me to continuing my study in the best Senior High School in Yogyakarta. And now, here I am, going medical school to achieve my dream since I was child: become a doctor.I am also happy to make friends with many people. And because world is so huge, I also make friends through the social media. For example, I met a student from Japan via twitter, and met an Indonesian student who is currently studying in Taiwan via facebook. Yes, I have a big interest about Japan especially in its culture, music, drama, and anime. I often come to the japan festival events in my town. But, it doesn't mean that I dislike my country. I love Indonesia with its variousities. I have learnt Indonesian traditional dance since I was a child.

Why do you think you should be selected? You can freely explain about your dreams, future, or anything (500 words maximum)I am originally from Yogyakarta which earthquake occurred in 2006 and the eruption of Mt. Merapi happened in 2010. I feel that it is also my responsibility to anticipate and help the post-disaste recovery. And now I am studying in Purwokerto, Banyumas, Central Java, near Mt. Slamet in Purwokerto which is still active and showing an increasing volcanic activity. Near here is Cilacap district, where is prone to tectonic earthquake and tsunami disasters Our location is also not too far from the area of Dieng. Dieng is a plateau region consists of active volcanic and can be said to be a giant volcano crater with some craters. The mountain is still active and often release toxic gases. This poisonous gas comes out of the crater and valley lands through the cracks. This is a dangerous toxic gases threats among the local residents. However, there are still limitations. As an example, one of the active crater is a crater spewing toxic gas named Timbang. There has been no observation center near the crater. During these periods, observations were made in residents home. In addition, there is no automatic detectors to detect the poisonous gas. Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation had only the manual way to make the detection of toxic gases around the Timbang crater, its by direct observation by their officer. Therefore, they needed a solution to this problem and I hope I could take a role in it.I am also a medical student. So I know about various diseases, including diseases that normally appear after the disaster. I can also provide mental support and motivation to disaster victims. From this program, I hope to learn a lot from the Japan disaster management, especially in dealing with health issues after the disasters hit. That way, it can improve my ability to cope with health problems after disaster. And I can share experiences with students, physicians, and other health practitioners on the matter here.
