Dear Global Glimpse community,

At Global Glimpse, we believe deeply in the power travel has to transform. Whether physical or mental, around the globe or across your city, travel is about relationships and authentic connection. It’s about seeing things from a new perspective, stepping out of your comfort zone, and learning how to bridge divides.

We aspire to expand our programs to reach even more students across the country because we know that there are very few opportunities for young people from low-income and minority backgrounds to travel and develop a global perspective. There are even fewer opportunities in our society for young people from disparate backgrounds to share experiences that build empathy, understanding, and a shared commitment to equality. We value connection and we know that every relationship contributes to the authenticity, quality, and safety of our programs. We are in the business of impacting lives and we will always balance our growth aspirations with an unwavering commitment to sustainability.

In 2019, we partnered with 82 diverse high schools across the United States to serve 1,129 students. We launched our first programs in Panama, expanded our programs in the Dominican Republic, and deepened our partnerships with local community organizations, businesses, and communities in Ecuador. This year we awarded over $3 million dollars in scholarships and since launching our programs in 2008, we have awarded more than $13 million dollars to make leadership development and travel accessible to students from all backgrounds.

PRE-TRIP WORKSHOPSEnrichment programming in our partner schools during the school year establishes foundational knowledge in the areas of youth leadership, globalization, and cultural awareness and prepares students for the international immersion experience.

INTERNATIONAL IMMERSIONStudents then spend 16 days during the summer immersed in daily life in a developing country. The international experience focuses on leadership development, cultural immersion, and service-learning.

ALUMNI AMBASSADOR PROGRAMFollowing the international immersion experience, students participate in a regionally-focused leadership program. Alumni mentor the next group of students at their school, prepare for college, and gain exposure to a wide range of cross-sector career mentors.

We commit to making experiential global education accessible to students from all socioeconomic backgrounds.

We build long-term partnerships with U.S. high schools and we invest in communities in Ecuador, Panama, and the Dominican Republic.

We leverage a sliding scale fee-for-service model and strong philanthropic and community support to scale our impact.

Over the past 12 years, Global Glimpse has served 6,700 students and 500 educators across 82 high schools in the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Chicago, and Massachusetts and five national college preparatory organizations.

Founded in 2007, we launched our first programs in partnership with 10 low-income high schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. Since then, we have grown to serve over 1,000 students annually expanding our programs across the Bay Area and successfully launching regional programs in New York (2013), Chicago (2015), and Massachusetts (2017).

Global Glimpse is more than travel. We work to prepare our students intellectually and emotionally for a transformative international experience. Accepted students participate in eight pre-trip workshops that prepare them to engage in deeper learning during the summer immersion program. We also provide follow-on alumni programming to ensure that their learning returns to their schools and home communities.

WHO WE SERVEOur students represent the economic, racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity of each of our partner high school communities. We provide need-based scholarships to all accepted students on a sliding scale, taking into account family income and the number of dependents in their household. Full scholarships are awarded to students with family incomes under $40,000,and students with family incomes under $60,000 are classified as low-income.

Global Glimpse gives a face to poverty, a voice to history, a vision and a story to development. We open a window into another world for students while constantly tying their experience back to their lives in the United States. During the summer, our students spend 16 days immersed in daily life in a developing country. The international program centers around cultural immersion, leadership development, and service-learning. Students travel in diverse groups of approximately 20 and each delegation is supported by two U.S. educators and two international program staff.

Our international staff work closely with local community partners to develop highly structured programs that allow students to explore a range of topics through the lenses of history, culture, politics, poverty, education, development, and business. Students also tutor local youth in English throughout their trip and participate in a “Community Action Project” (CAP), a student-designed project developed and executed in partnership with a local community organization.

MEET SUNILDASunilda is one of our host mothers for Living Like a Local day. Her house (pictured here) in the community of Los Gajitos is on a mountain bluff that overlooks the city of Constanza; a breathtaking view that she enjoys sharing with students when they finish helping her with the daily chores. She looks forward to spending the day with students because her husband passed away and all six of her own children have moved to other cities so she cherishes the company and being able to teach our students important skills and life lessons. She is holding a greca for brewing coffee, which she shares with our students.

The Dominican Republic (DR) is an island nation and one of the Caribbean’s most geographically diverse countries with energetic people and a vibrant, music-filled culture. We began working in the DR in 2013 and our programs have quickly expanded to four cities. Our DR programs engage bilingual Dominican youth to help build experiential learning experiences for our U.S. students. These Dominican youth also support our students to teach English classes for local community members.

Programs in the DR provide students with perspective on education, global business, politics, history, and culture with a special focus on migration and inequality. Students are exposed to the complex relations between Haiti and the DR, as well as the impact that high immigration rates to the U.S. has on the economy and social life in the DR.

MEET BEBIMaría Tereza Mendoza, also known as Bebi, lives in the community of Paris of Parita located in the outskirts of Chitré, Panama. She is an active member of the organization “Mujeres Amigas del Manglar” - which translates to “Female Friends of the Mangroves.” Our students meet María during their Environment Day and learn about her commitment to volunteer every week on a reforestation project of the mangroves surrounding Paris with ten other women from her community. They also work together on different recycling projects and she is part of a group of inspiring women from the community of Paris who fight and advocate for a safe, clean, and beautiful environment.

Panama has long been one of the world’s greatest crossroads. The opening of the Panama Canal in the 20th century served as a bridge between the Americas and connected Eastern and Western civilizations like never before. From the lush coffee-growing mountains and untapped rainforests, to solitary beaches and uninhabited isles, Panama is one of the most biodiverse places in the world.

We launched our programs in Panama in 2019 in the towns of Chitré and Las Tablas. Our programs provide students with the opportunity to explore the complex impact of globalization and the dynamic interplay between environmental conservation and urban growth, as well as the challenges that persist for underserved indigienous groups and rural communities.

MEET ADANAdan Angulo is a “shaman,” or spiritual healer, who was born in Guaranda, Ecuador. He grew up raised by parents who were also healers and learned about various spiritual traditions and medicinal practices at a young age. Adan has dedicated his life to his practice and has performed cleansing and healing ceremonies for over 28 years in the community of San Lorenzo, located in the outskirts of Guaranda. Our students meet Adan during their Indigenous Worldviews Day where they learn about his practice and have the opportunity to participate in a healing ceremony. He enjoys getting to spend time with our students and is inspired by their curiosity and eagerness to learn more about him and his spiritual practice.

Sitting on the equator between Colombia and Peru, Ecuador boasts breathtaking scenery, biodiversity, a strong indigenous presence, beautiful artisan crafts, and bustling markets. We launched our programs in Ecuador in 2015. Our diverse sites in the Andean highlands expose students to the high-stakes interplay between environmental preservation, economic development, and indigenous worldviews.

Our Ecuador programs have a strong focus on indigenous rights, along with history, culture, global business, and education. Students grapple with the positive and negative implications of economic progress and its impact on indigenous communities and the environment.

Ambassadors celebrate their accomplishments, learn about opportunities in college, and develop a plan to carry the Global Glimpse spirit forward during the transition into the next stage of their lives.

Students return from their international experience inspired and motivated to give back to their local communities. We provide our alumni with a follow-on program that supports them to take on leadership roles in their schools and prepare for college and careers.

Through six inspiring alumni summits, our alumni are empowered to be ambassadors for the Global Glimpse program at their school, recruit the next class of Glimpsers, and facilitate pre-trip workshops. They also receive college and career guidance from a network of cross-sector professional mentors.

44% of our students are the first in their family to attend college. In this summit, college-age alumni support Ambassadors to navigate the college admissions process and write about their Global Glimpse experience on college applications.

Ambassadors prepare to recruit and mentor the next generation of Glimpsers at their school. Students plan for outreach, practice presenting about their Global Glimpse experience, and connect with peers from across their region.

Ambassadors develop an understanding of cross-sector career opportunities, practice mock interviews, and learn to network by engaging in conversations with mentors from a range of professions.

Ambassadors learn the importance and power of storytelling as a tool for social change. Students then reflect on their Global Glimpse experience, draft their personal stories, and practice their public speaking skills.

Through our program, students develop a deep sense of personal and social responsibility and the empathy, agency, and perspective they need to succeed in college and careers and drive positive change in their communities.

We diligently evaluate the impact of all of our programming on students, parents, educators, and community partners. We incorporate feedback and learning from annual post-program and alumni surveys to improve each component of our program. Our surveys evaluate short-term outcomes in participants’ awareness, agency, and engagement as well as long-term outcomes in global competence, college persistence, and leadership.

As we prepare for more significant growth, we are increasing our focus on alumni engagement and measuring the long-term impact of our programs.

Global Glimpse Leaders (GGLs) are teachers who champion the Global Glimpse program at our partner high schools. We provide comprehensive training and ongoing support for GGLs to lead our pre-trip workshop curriculum and travel with students on the international summer immersion program. The Global Glimpse experience prepares students to navigate the social and emotional challenges of life after high school.
