Summer gardens a time for relaxationand enjoyment After working hard over the springplanting, pruning and growing, summershould be a time of enjoyment. There isstill work to do, but your garden is at itsbest, so make sure you find the time to sitback, relax and enjoy it.

However, just before you start to cooloff, you should check your plants and vegetable crops for diseases. You will notice thatyour spring vegetables are ready to harvest, but it is essential that you check your cropsand plants for signs of contamination.

Common diseases found in your vegetable gardens and plants Southern blight The fungus that causes this attacks roots, stems and leaves that areunder the surface of the soil. First you will notice a wilting of the foliage. A white fungusgrowth may appear next if the soil is warm and moist. As the disease progresses, allplants that are next to each other in a row will die. To try and prevent it, crop rotationfor vegetables might stop the fungus from occurring.

Top of theclass

Lunch at The Schoolrooms is an indulgent treat, writes Stephanie Burns.

At this time of year, a mere break inthe clouds is enough to warrant adash into the countryside let alonea full blazing sun. So when a mildlunchtime presented itself, we jumped inthe car and headed out to Bradfield to seeif one of its well-loved businesses really wasas good as wed heard.

Since The Schoolrooms originalmanagers took charge again earlier thisyear, the caf/deli/butchery has once againbeen winning rave reviews for its localmenu that is almost entirely made by handby head chef James Grey and sous LaneySmith. Out front, Matthew Hurt andHannah Quarmy provide a friendly andwelcoming service.

It was the last Friday of half term whenwe visited and we were lucky to get a seatin the bustling caf, which can be found inthe eves of the former school. Lookinground, our fellow diners were enjoying theweekly special of fish and chips completewith tartare sauce, pea puree and lemonwedge for just 5. At almost half theusual price, this is an absolute steal, but wecouldnt help being tempted by some ofthe menus other offerings.

It was the steak and Bradfield Brewery alepie that caught my partners eye. Servedwith seasonal veg, fat chips and rich gravy,and accompanied by a glass of ArgentinianMalbec, he made sure this lunchtime treatwas as indulgent as possible. With tendermeat, a wonderfully crisp puff pastry lid andseriously good chips, the dish was a real hit.

I chose a lighter option; the daily deliboard. The chunky wooden board came

laden with homemadeham hock terrine, threeartisan cheeses, half aToppings pork pie, realale chutney, a tiny Kilnerjar of pickled onion,salad with shards of crispprosciutto, and two thickslices of fresh brownbloomer most of whichis sourced from the deliand butchery downstairs.Every element was greatbut the star of the showwas that terrine; full offlavour and absolutelydelicious.

To complete theexperience, my partner ordered the gooeycaramel chocolate fondant, served warmwith vanilla Peak District ice cream. It was afantastic end to his hearty meal and he tookgreat pleasure in scraping every last crumbfrom the bowl.

Meanwhile, I had turned my attentions tothe counters tantalising selection of freshcakes, tray bakes and biscuits. I can neverresist a fruit scone and when its servedwith Tiptree raspberry jam and light-as-airwhipped cream all the better.

As we left, we passed a group of walkerswho were basking in the autumn sun outon the terrace, taking full advantage of theunseasonably warm weather. Given thestandard of the food at The Schoolrooms, Iwont be waiting for another burst ofsunshine to return. Come rain or shine its well worth a visit.

Memorial day raises 950The annual Mosborough Rugby memorial day, which took place onSt Georges Day, was a great success and raised 950 for BluebellWood Childrens Hospice.

The event started as a fundraising day after the loss of some goodfriends and club members and has evolved over the years into afamily celebration day. This years event kicked off with an under-14s tournament and the festivities continued throughout the daywith senior games both won by Mosborough family-friendlyactivities, a cake stall and plenty of food.

The fundraising continued with a beach rugby tournament inMajorca. Fifty two players from Mosborough joined the 35 mensand 21 ladies teams taking part in the tournament, which attractedmore than 3,000 people.

We all want what's best for our pets and Ark Vets believesthey've got the key. Newly offering keyhole surgery (orlaproscopic procedures) for their operative patients, is justone example.

Recovery post classic abdominal surgery means a minimum oftwo weeks recovery, equating to lead walks only or houseconfinementthe worst kind of misery for your pet, and you.Now, Ark Vets in Killamarsh and Dronfield have started to offerminimally invasive laparoscopic surgical procedures to shorten the

Laparoscopy allows for better visualisation of abdominal organs;this greater surgical precision minimises pain and blood loss. Thedifference in the amount of disruption to our pets body issignificant, meaning faster healing and notably less discomfort.Laparoscopic spaying has been proven 65per cent less painfuland there are over 50per cent less post-operative complicationswhen compared to the old methods.

Dr. Ian Lowe, partner and veterinary surgeon at Ark Vets, ischampioning the use of these new capabilities and is also acertified exotic animal specialist (GPcert (ExAP)); therefore,operating on our smaller, more delicate creatures, is less dauntingthan it was when just doing procedures with hands and the nakedeye alone.

Ark understands how scary emergency situations involving yourpet can be. They are one of the only few remaining practices inSheffield to offer its own out-of-hours service with emergencycover to registered clients, 24/7, 365 days a year. Out-of-hours care is provided by Ark vets and nurses, attheir own sites, with instant access to your pet'smedical records. Ark appreciates dealing with anemergency situation is stressful and upsetting enoughwithout having the added complications of notknowing what to do, who you will see or where youneed to go in order to get your pet seen as a matterof urgency.

If your pet needs to undergo a surgical procedureunder anaesthesia, Ark Vets will obtain a full clinicalpre-anaesthetic assessment before the vet decides ona tailored anaesthetic regime specifically designed foryour pet's individual requirements. Nissan turns upthe drama on the GT-RThe current-gen Nissan GT-R hasbeen with us now since 2007,and every year since theJapanese company has tickledits underbelly and internalworkings an extra dollop ofpower here, a suspension tweakthere. You get the idea.

Now Nissan has really gone totown with the MY17 edition andthe changes are the mostdramatic yet. In essence, the carslooks have been changed givingit a more aggressive stance onthe road with better aerodynamicproperties. Theres a moreluxurious new interior with fewer buttons and better sound deadening. The suspension hasbeen changed to give better handling and improve ride quality. Power has also been raised to562hp.

The order books opened this month with first deliveries this autumn.

Feel the noiseThe latest generation of the Audi R8is a welcome relief. Instead offollowing the rest of the industry bydownsizing and turbo-charging theirengines, the R8 has stuck to its gunsand kept to a naturally-aspiratedformula. Not only are these enginesmore responsive compared to theirturbo-charged counterparts, buttheyre considerably louder too.

As you would expect, the R8 Coupe is a fantastically aurally stimulating machine butthis can only get better because now the Spyder version is coming along.

Available to order from later in the spring with deliveries at the end of the year, thenew R8 Spyder will come with a 532hp 5.2-litre V10 powerhouse mated to an S-Tronicdual-clutch gearbox. As with the Coupe, theres no manual available.

Diesel joins the ClubWith the launch of the latest MiniClubman back in October of lastyear, it was only a matter of timebefore the most fuel-efficientdiesel variant was placed underthe bonnet.

Its called the One D Clubmanand itll be powered by a 1.5-litrethree-cylinder diesel producing116hp, which can get theClubman from 0-62mph in 10.4seconds. Not bad for a car whichin manual trim emits less than100g/km of CO2 and manages74.3mpg on the combined cycle.Automatic is slightly less frugal.

motor producing either 469hp or 503hp in C63 S guise, and itll come with all the sameequipment options. It literally is a C63 with the roof chopped off.
