Jon ScieszkaJon Scieszka earned his MFA in Fiction from Columbia University in New York in 1980 and began his writing career painting apartments. From there, he moved on to teaching elementary school for 10 years. After many rejection letters, Jon finally got his first book, The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs!, published and has been writing books for kids for over twenty years. He has also authored books such as The Stinky Cheese Man, The Time Warp Trio series, Math Curse, Science Verse, the Spaceheadz series, the Trucktown series, and a “mess” of others. He is the founder of the literacy initiative for boys called GUYS READ. He was named our nation’s first National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature—and, he still has the medal to prove it. An engaging and humorous speaker, Jon’s audiences will enjoy his keynote as much as they do his books.

Richard AllingtonDick Allington, Professor of Education at the University of Tennessee, has served as president of the National Reading Conference and the International Reading Association. He received the William S. Gray Citation of Merit from IRA for his contributions to the organization and the profession. He was co-recipient of the Albert J. Harris Award for contributions to improving professional understanding of reading/learning disabilities and was elected to the Reading Hall of Fame. Dick has served, or is serving, on several editorial advisory boards and has authored more than 100 research articles and more than a dozen books. A recognized leader in the field of literacy, Dick will continue to inspire us to help our students.

Nancie AtwellNancie Atwell is one of the most highly respected educators in the United States. She teaches seventh- and eighth-grade writing, reading, and history at the Center for Teaching and Learning, a K-8 demonstration school she founded in Edgecomb, Maine, in 1990. Nancie was the first classroom teacher to receive the NCTE David H. Russell Award and the MLA Mina P. Shaughnessy Prize for distinguished research in the teaching of English. She has authored numerous books that have inspired generations of teachers. She has helped students become independent, sophisticated readers and writers through her workshops and by beginning each day the way Nancie does—with poetry, the mother genre.

Carmen Agra DeedyCarmen Agra Deedy is an internationally known, award-winning author of children’s literature, storyteller, and radio contributor. Born in Havana, Cuba, she came to the United States as a refugee with her family in 1964 after the Cuban Revolution. Carmen began her career as a storyteller and has engaged audiences at such varied venues as the American Library Association, Refugees International, the Disney Institute, and the Kennedy Center, just to name a few. An ardent supporter of libraries, she was the 2008 National Spokesperson for School Library Media Month and some of her most notable award-winning books that fill our libraries include: 14 Cows for America, The Yellow Star and The Library Dragon.

Jerry O’Shea Cynthia Church Amy PierceJerry O’Shea (Assistant Superintendent-Curriculum Director), Cynthia Church (Principal) and Amy Pierce (Reading Consultant) are part of a leadership team in Marquardt District 15 collaborating with classroom teachers, reading specialists and ELL teachers to implement a trade book based curriculum developed in accordance with Richard Allington’s research. Despite having a high percentage of low-income students and English language learners in the district’s population, students have shown tremendous growth. Come learn more about how this work connects to the Common Core Standards and impacts the student growth aspect of our new teacher evaluation guidelines.

SUNDAY CUMMINSSunday Cummins was a public school teacher for ten years and on the faculty at National Louis University for five years. Sunday continues to teach and learn alongside educators and students as a literacy consultant, author and researcher with a focus on reading and writing informational texts. She shares her work on the power of teaching with nonfiction texts to transform students’ thinking by presenting at the local, state, national and international conferences. She is an avid reader of informational trade books and writes meaningful reviews teachers can access on her blog. She has published several articles, written a book on the close reading of informational texts and is working on a second book that addresses the complexity of informational texts. Sunday ‘gets’ being a teacher in today’s classrooms and you are guaranteed to leave her presentation with effective strategies to take back to the classroom on Monday morning.

Nic BishopNic Bishop was born in England and raised in Bangladesh, Sudan, and Papua New Guinea. He has traveled across Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Nic has been likened to a David Attenborough for kids and has the adventurous spirit of an Indiana Jones. His work as a photographer has taken him to the farthest corners of the planet and back home, where his guest bedroom often accommodates tarantulas, snakes, and chameleons. Nic switched from writing adult to children’s books because he remembered his early school years in which he had no interest in reading the fiction books given to him. More than sixty children’s books later, Nic Bishop, acclaimed photographer and author, will provide conference attendees with a snapshot into the picture perfect world of non-fiction. Say cheese!

Ellen kacicEllen Kacic has been an educator for over twenty years, teaching in Texas, Wisconsin, Ohio, Florida, and now in Illinois. With teaching experience across the country, and the grade levels, Ellen will share ideas on how to incorporate close reading strategies within integrated literacy units that meet the rigor outlined in the common core, engage students’ critical thinking skills, improve learning, and incorporate various forms of printed text and multimedia excerpts.

Sheila tucker and joanne komendaTrue master teachers, Sheila Tucker and Joanne Komenda have more than fifty years of combined teaching experience in a variety of educational settings. They have effectively combined Sunday Cummin’s close reading strategies with other effective research based strategies to develop independent thinkers who are fully engaged in deeply reading texts, critically thinking about their reading, and can demonstrate understanding of texts through their writing. You won’t want to miss out on their inventive and practical ideas.



Mary EhrenworthMary Ehrenworth is Deputy Director at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, Columbia University, which was founded by Lucy Calkins. Mary oversees the Project’s work with middle school teachers, coaches, principals, and students. Mary is the author or co-author of many books and articles including: Pathways to the Common Core and Units of Study for Teaching Reading, Grades 3-5: A Curriculum for the Reading Workshop. Mary is a speaker and staff developer in children’s and adolescent literacy in school districts across the nation and internationally. From that day long ago when a beloved teacher gave her The Secret Garden, to the days she spends now sitting next to children and teachers helping them become powerful and passionate readers and writers, Mary has been lucky enough to spend her time among things she loves best: books, kids, and teachers.

Debbie DillerDebbie Diller has been an educator for over thirty-five years; how time flies and how teaching has changed! Debbie has taught Pre-K through 10th grade in public schools. Her experience ranges from being a classroom teacher to a Title I reading specialist to a migrant education teacher to a literacy coach, as well as a national consultant and author. Debbie uses her strong understandings of child development and literacy and math development to address the differentiated needs of all students in her work with teachers and administrators. Debbie builds upon current research and theory to provide practical, realistic applications in today’s classrooms. Debbie strives to be a 21st century teacher, so to stay tuned into their needs she spends time every week working with children and their teachers in classrooms.

Tayce SantyBuild a Bridge to Math Literacy, Workshop Style with classroom teacher Tayce Santy. Tayce incorporates Debbie Diller’s work with math stations and small group instruction in a workshop style format resulting in classroom math lessons that are engaging and effective. But wait there’s more–Tayce also utilizes a classroom economy that teaches children the lifelong skills of financial responsibility through fun, experiential learning.

Sheila ruh and sherry sejnostTechnology has come a long way from just learning to keyboard in a Word document. Valued members of the IRC Educational Media Committee and Conference Technology Committee, Sheila Ruh and Sherry Sejnost have worked with both teachers and students to effectively integrate technology throughout the curriculum to raise student achievement and motivation. Sheila and Sherry will share their expertise as well as inventive and practical ideas that everyone, including the technologically challenged, can take back to implement in the classroom.



Douglas FisherDoug Fisher is a professor of Educational Leadership at San Diego State University and a teacher leader at Health Sciences High & Middle College. Doug is on the Board of Directors for the International Reading Association and a member of the California Reading Hall of Fame. He is the recipient of many awards honoring both his writing and teaching. Doug has authored and co-authored numerous journal articles and books related to improving student achievement, reading and literacy, differentiated instruction, assessment, and curriculum design. Doug’s exploration of the language and learning connection is bridging the gap between literacy and content area instruction and will truly inform and motivate middle and secondary teachers.

Nancy FreyNancy Frey is a professor of Literacy in the School of Teacher Education at San Diego State University. She is the recipient of many awards and has authored and co-authored numerous journal articles and books. Nancy is a board member of the California Reading Association, and teaches a variety of content area instruction courses in elementary and secondary literacy. As a credentialed special educator, reading specialist, and administrator in California, Nancy also strongly supports students with diverse learning needs. Her favorite place to be is the Health Sciences High and Middle College, where she learns from teachers and students every day.

Dan GutmanDan Gutman was born in a log cabin in Illinois and used to write by candlelight with a piece of chalk on a shovel. Oh, wait a minute. That was Abraham Lincoln. Actually, Dan Gutman grew up in New Jersey and, for some reason, still lives there. When he was a young boy, Dan didn’t like to read. So, he decided to use humor, action and simple writing techniques to attract even the most reluctant readers. His My Weird School series, The Genius Files series, and the baseball card adventure series are just a few of the many books your reluctant readers have come to enjoy.

CandacE FlemingCandace Fleming has always been a storyteller or, as some people might say, a “fibber.” Luckily for Candace, instead of her parents calling her stories “fibs,” they called them “imaginative” and encouraged her to put her stories down on paper. Candace studied history in college, and it wasn’t until she had children that she discovered writing children’s books would combine her love of stories, musical language, history, and reading. After years of rejection letters, one of Candace’s stories became a book, and since then her career as a children’s author has flourished. Candace’s passion for reading and writing is contagious—listen to her story and catch the bug.



Kate KliseKate Klise has written many award-winning children’s books, most of which are illustrated by her sister, M. Sarah Klise. But Kate wasn’t always a children’s author—she began her career working as a correspondent for People magazine. Writing thousands of letters to family and friends is probably why she writes many of her books in epistolary format, such as the popular Regarding series, which is presented in a scrapbook style format with letters, journal entries, and related ephemera telling the story. She is also known for her picture books as well as the bestselling 43 Old Cemetery Road series. Kate’s presentation will contain lots of practical classroom ideas that will not disappoint conference attendees.

Stephanie HarveyStephanie Harvey is passionate about literacy! Whatever the size of the group—500 teachers at a conference, 50 administrators in a district workshop, or 25 students on the floor—Stephanie brings something special when she talks about literacy: passion. She has spent the past forty years teaching and learning about reading and writing. After fifteen years of regular elementary and special education teaching, Stephanie became a staff developer for the Denver-based Public Education and Business Coalition, a partnership of leaders from education and business who support innovation in public school. She currently serves as a private literacy consultant to schools and districts throughout the country. Teaching kids reading and thinking strategies to enhance their literacy development and move them to be independent, engaged, spirited, lifelong readers, writers, thinkers, and learners is our primary goal. Helping teachers reach that goal is our most important mission.

Roberta SejnostCuriosity. At the heart of lifelong learning is curiosity. Roberta Sejnost is a nationally recognized staff developer, presenter and member of the IRC Executive Committee. Roberta is a curious lifelong learner. New common core standards require that students work together to read and compare complex texts and apply understandings gained from them through writing, speaking and listening. Learn how to combine comprehension strategies, the research process and student collaboration to create well-structured, student-led cross-curricular book discussions and inquiry projects that help students build knowledge about things that matter in their lives.

Kristin Ziemke and Katie MuhtarisAfter working extensively with Stephanie Harvey, Anne Goudvis, and Harvey Daniels, Kristin Ziemke and Katie Muhtaris have co-authored the book Connecting Comprehension and Technology, which can be summed up in four words: engagement, curiosity, content and thinking! This practical session will build upon Stephanie’s keynote and share comprehension, collaboration, and inquiry lessons that guide students to work effectively in small groups, identify questions that matter and develop thinking habits that guide them to personalize learning across the curriculum.



Eric LitwinEric Litwin (Mr. Eric) is a song-singing, guitar-strumming, book-writing, harmonica-blowing, five time national award-winning, folksy, fun type of guy. He is the #1 New York Times best-selling author of the Pete the Cat picture books. Mr. Eric is a popular performing artist focusing on interactive literacy and participatory music. He has played at Lincoln Center as well as a plethora of schools, festivals, and libraries across the country. Mr. Eric shares simple, interactive songs and stories using traditional techniques such as call and response, repetition, and creative movement, which can be applied to lessons, classroom management, and transitions. Mary Pope OsborneMary Pope Osborne grew up in a military family, so by the time she was fifteen she had already traveled throughout much of the United States. After college, Mary still craved adventure, so she set off with a small band of Europeans to “The East.” She traveled overland in a caravan of rickety vans to sixteen Asian countries including Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Nepal. Mary had to return home due to illness. Then one day, out of the blue, she began to write. Now more than thirty years and a hundred books later, she feels fortunate to take journeys through time in the Magic Tree House series. Mary writes the Magic Tree House fiction books, and her husband and sister write the non-fiction companion books—perfect pairings to help enhance students’ reading for meaning experience!

NATALIE POPE BOYCENatalie Pope Boyce and her sister Mary Pope Osborne share a common idea–books give kids an amazing chance to have their own adventures–and they never have to leave home! Natalie fondly remembers the beautiful places she and Mary have lived growing up, such as Salzburg, Austria where they could see a castle from their bedroom window and walk down the same lovely old streets that Mozart walked. Natalie continues to travel around the world and believes the memories of her travels are what makes Fact Trackers so much fun to write. IRC is thrilled to have both Mary and Natalie share their lives and their books during the Building Bridges to Literacy Conference–come prepared for adventure as we travel through time with Mary and Natalie!

Roxanne OwensDr. Seuss is one of the most beloved authors of all time. His lyrical and fun-loving use of language brings a sense of joy to all who read his books. Roxanne Owens, one of IRC’s Past President’s, will show you how to build bridges of literacy within the classroom, between schools and families and within families based on Dr. Seuss’s work. Join Roxanne–make delightful whimsy ensue, you’ll just want to yell “Whoopdeedo”!



Jan RichardsonJan Richardson is a literacy consultant and author who earned her Ph.D. studying struggling readers. She has been a classroom teacher, reading specialist, Reading Recovery® teacher leader, and staff developer. Her most recent book The Next Step in Guided Reading provides teachers with practical suggestions and lesson plans for increasing the power and impact of guided reading. Participants leave her workshops with a new awareness of what can be done to motivate, engage, and accelerate every student—especially struggling readers.

Aaron ReynoldsAaron Reynolds is a New York Times Bestselling Author and has written many highly acclaimed books for kids, including Creepy Carrots!, Chicks and Salsa, Back of the Bus, and the Joey Fly, Private Eye graphic novel series. Aaron wasn’t always a writer. After graduating in Theatre from Illinois Wesleyan University, he held many interesting and exciting jobs, including actor, businessman, waiter, dancer, carpenter, and chef. He has never been a carrot, a rooster or a superhero, but he has a passion for kids’ books and seeing kids reading them. He regularly makes time to visit schools where his hilarious hands-on presentations keep kids spellbound.

Timothy RasinskiOnce an elementary and middle school classroom and Title 1 teacher in rural Nebraska, Tim Rasinski is now a Professor of Education in the Reading and Writing Center at Kent State University. He has written over 150 articles and has edited or authored 12 books on reading education. Tim has served on the Board of Directors of the International Reading Association, was editor of The Reading Teacher, and currently serves as co-editor of the Journal of Literacy Research. His interests include reading fluency and word study, reading in the elementary and middle grades, and readers who struggle.

Deborah wrightDeborah Wright has an M.A. in Linguistics and has been a teacher for over twenty-five years. She will combine her extensive background in literacy and language with Tim Rasinski’s work to provide conference attendees with research-based practical classroom ideas related to word study. Not only will her work bridge gaps for struggling readers but it will empower English language learners to acquire the language necessary to think critically and communicate effectively.



Tony SteadTony Stead is an Australian educator who has taught in elementary schools and lectured at the University of Melbourne. He is the past president of the Melbourne Chapter of the Australian Reading Association and the author of many publications. His latest publication, co-authored with Linda Hoyt, Is That a Fact?: Teaching Nonfiction Writing, and the video series Time for Nonfiction highlight recent work with several teachers at the Manhattan New School. Tony has been a featured speaker at hundreds of conferences. He currently works extensively in literacy education with school districts across the United States, Canada, and Australia. His greatest love is learning from children!

Maria WaltherMaria Walther tells her first-grade students that she went to school for a long time to learn as much as she could about teaching young children. Committed to staying in the classroom, she has earned three degrees, National Board Certification, and has served on numerous district committees to improve literacy instruction. She is also the author of several books on literacy instruction. Along with teaching young learners, Maria inspires other professionals by sharing her latest thinking related to reading and writing. Although Maria has received numerous awards, her greatest honor is that she has the enormous responsibility of giving her first graders the gift of literacy every day.

Reba M. WadsworthReba Wadsworth, a former elementary classroom teacher, guidance counselor, and principal, now works as an independent consultant. She has conducted numerous literacy workshops at the local, state, national, and international level. Reba currently serves as a national consultant for Booksource, Inc. and Developmental Studies Center, conducting workshops across the United States. Her work is centered on the belief that children must read and write everyday in authentic ways that value the background knowledge that each child brings to school. She supports her practices with the use of outstanding picture books as described in the book she co-authored, Reading Aloud Across the Curriculum: How to Build Bridges in Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

Becky Anderson WilkinsBecky Anderson Wilkins is the co-owner of Anderson’s Bookshops and Anderson’s Bookfair Company in Naperville, Downers Grove, and Aurora. She has been a children’s literature consultant and book buyer for over twenty-five years. Her family business was awarded the Illinois Family Business of the Year in 2002 by Loyola University and won the prestigious national award for Bookseller of the Year by Publisher’s Weekly. She is past president of the American Booksellers Association, the Association of Booksellers for Children (ABC) and the Great Lakes Booksellers Association. Her love of reading, her ability to place the right book in a child’s hand, and her service on the Illinois Reads committee are what IRC appreciates most!



Kassia Omohundro WedekindKassia Omohundro Wedekind is currently a kindergarten teacher at Bailey’s Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences, a public school in Falls Church, Virginia, where she previously taught second and third grades and served as a math coach. Her professional passion is building strong mathematical communities in which teachers guide students’ development as mathematicians through problem solving and an understanding of how children learn about math. Much of her work focuses on the connections of the workshop format of instruction in both literacy and mathematics, as well as the role of storytelling.

ANDREA BEATYWelcome IRC’s newest Prairie State Award winner and Illinois Reads author Andrea Beaty. Andrea was born in southern Illinois and raised in the village of Ewing, which is the basis of her novel, Secrets of the Cicada Summer. The characters in her picture books and novels are smart, funny, and unapologetic in their passion. Like Andrea, they are doers. Curiosity, creativity, innovation and persistence are recurring themes in her work and her life. Andrea’s books have won numerous awards including the Friends of American Writing Award, Parents Choice Silver and Gold Medals and National Association of Parenting Publication Gold medals.

Jon waterhouseIRC is proud to feature National Geographic Explorer and Society Fellow, Jon Waterhouse. He is also the Executive Director of the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council. In the tenth grade, Jon dropped out of school. Not long after, he found himself facing either prison or the military. He chose the latter. “I needed to get as far away from the negative influences in my life as possible,” he says. For the next twenty years, Jon traveled all over the world with the U.S. Navy and backpacked through the Scottish moors, Asian jungles, the meadows of the Azores, and the Alaskan wilderness. Jon believes “education is important” and advocates, “Don’t accept the accepted path; have the courage to go out there. Get a passport, save a little money, get a subscription to National Geographic, buy a globe, and go to some place that grips you.” Join IRC in listening to Jon’s gripping stories–his work will definitely impact how you view the underprivileged and disadvantaged children in your school or community.

Susan Bennett-ARmisteadSusan Bennett-Armistead is currently an associate professor of literacy education and the Correll Professor of Early Literacy at the University of Maine. Susan has worked as a preschool teacher, an administrator and the Program Supervisor for Michigan State University’s Child Development Laboratories. Her work in these various settings included a brief “but delightful” stint in the Alaskan bush. Susan speaks internationally on literacy development in young children as well as on the role families can play in that development. Susan is the author and co-author of several books for teachers and families as well as a collection of informational texts for emergent readers.

On-site registration is also available. Hotel reservations and meal function tickets should be secured prior to arrival in Springfield. Meal functions usually sell out early. CPDUs and COLLEGE CREDIT at the IRC Conference

The Illinois Reading Council is an approved Illinois State Board of Education Continuing Professional Development Unit provider. While attending the March Conference, you may earn one CPDU per hour of attendance and participation. Sessions attended must be logged, and an ISBE evaluation form must be completed and deposited in the IRC evaluation box at the end of the conference. The Evaluation and Evidence of Completion Forms must also be completed for your records. Please review your personal Certification Renewal Plan to determine which sessions fit. Be sure that your goals are broad enough to include a variety of literacy topics. The Illinois Reading Council is merely the provider. The responsibility for determining which sessions agree with your plan and are granted credits by your school district is yours.

One semester hour of university credit will be available for attending the conference. For more information, download the College Credit Registration form available on the IRC Website.

• Housing Reservations will only be processed online with a credit card until February 19, 2014. After February 19th, all rooms that have not been reserved will be released for general sale.

• Advance Deposit of one night’s room and tax will be charged to your credit card by some of the hotels. If you would like to pay by check, please forward your deposit check to your assigned hotel and your credit card will be credited. Do not send any checks to the Illinois Reading Council or the Springfield Housing Bureau.

• Confirmation will be emailed to you from the Housing Bureau upon completion of your housing reservation, as well as any changes or cancellations. Please keep this email for your records and watch for 2nd email from hotel after February 19th.

• Cancellations or changes to your arrival/departure must be made before February 19, 2014 to receive a full refund. The advance deposit charge is non-refundable after February 19, 2014. Please note that some hotels charge for early departure and some require a two-night minimum stay. After February 19th, please make changes directly with the hotel.

• Double Rooms (2 beds) are at a premium. Please do not reserve a double room (2 beds) unless there are 2 or more attendees.

• Free Shuttle Service will be provided by the IRC between all the hotels except the on-site hotels listed and the Prairie Capital Convention Center on Thursday and Friday. Shuttles run approximately every 45-60 minutes from 6:15 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Night shuttles run every 90 minutes from 6:15 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. On Saturday, there are many parking options available and on-street metered parking is FREE!
