He is a professor of curriculum and instruction at the University of Nevada, Reno, and is a co-author of Developing Literacy: An Integrated Approach to Assessment and Instruction. ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS Dr. Shane Templeton is Foundation Professor of Literacy Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno. His research highlights orthographic and vocabulary knowledge in elementary, middle and secondary school.

Dr. Donald Bear is a Professor in the Department of Educational Specialties in the College of Education at the University of Nevada, Reno. Recent studies and writings examine word study with English language learners, and the development, assessment, and instruction of preschoolers. Templeton and Bear are senior authors of Houghton Mifflin Spelling and Vocabulary.

Special Topics in Reading: Understanding Spelling and Vocabulary Instruction Earn one hour graduate credit RLR 595 Special Topics in Reading-Understanding Spelling and Vocabulary Instruction Participants may earn one credit hour by attending the SCIRA Suburban Council of the International Reading Association Conference on Thursday, April 26 from 4 to 8 and Special Topics in Reading Understanding Spelling and Vocabulary Instruction on Saturday, April 28, from 8-5 at the North Shore Campus.

Course Description Connie Obrochta author of Vocabulary Field Trips will be the instructor for this course. Connie has been a classroom teacher and reading specialist, and is currently a literacy coach in Evanston, IL. The course will cover the following topics:

• Basic structures of language and literacy programs • Adapting Best Practice word study instruction to the state language arts standards • Historical perspectives on spelling and vocabulary learning • Recent research on spelling and vocabulary learning • Assessing what students already know about word patterns and vocabulary • Practical approaches for spelling and vocabulary learning in the classroom

8:00 – 12:00 The Teacher Renewal Seminar and Summer SCIRA (Suburban Council International Reading Association) Conference theme for this year is Exploring Informational Text. This is a great opportunity to observe how teaching theory is turned into successful instruction. The dates of the Teacher Renewal Seminar are Wednesday, June 20, Thursday June 21 and Friday June 22 (SCIRA conference) from 8:00 to 12:00 P.M. Mt. Prospect School District #57 will host the event at Lincoln Junior High. Participants enrolled in the Teacher Renewal Conference will receive 1 hour of graduate credit through NLU. The cost of this workshop is $289 for one semester graduate credit plus $40 fee for materials, coffee service and the SCIRA conference. Donna Ogle, Professor National-Louis University, and Laura Beltchenko, Assistant Superintendent Wauconda School District will be the Teacher Renewal Seminar keynote speakers. Donna Ogle will “kick off” the Teacher Renewal Seminar on Wednesday, June 20th. Thursday, June 21st will begin with Laura Beltchenko sharing one of her high-energy presentations. Following the keynote address, participants will choose among a Carousel of Informational Breakout Sessions presented by Area Literacy Leaders. These sessions will focus on informational text classroom application K to 12. On Friday, June 22nd, Nell Duke will deliver the Key Note address at the Summer SCIRA conference. Nell’s topic, “Using Informational Literature in the Classroom” is sure to please all participants. The cost for the one day SCIRA conference will be $25.00 (for members), $15.00 (for associates and students) and $55.00 (non-members—includes one year membership fee). Participants will receive 3 CPDU’s.
