SUMNER PLACE AND IZAAK WALTON’S LEAGUE JOIN TO MAKE A WISH COME TRUE by Chris Westover The team members at Sumner Place Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation began a new and exciting program this year which focuses on enhancing Quality of Life for the residents they serve. This program is all about recreating past pleasurable pursuits that were once, or perhaps still are, very important and meaningful. The program is to “Grant a Wish” to one of the residents of Sumner Place. For the most recent “Grant A Wish,” the resident selected was Christine Purser. Christine was an avid shooter in her younger years. She grew up in North Dakota on the farm doing chores and often spending time with her father, who she remembers, "always had a gun in his hand." Then as a young mother, Christine and her husband would travel around with their three boys and shoot competitively in many different competitions, "My husband would get jealous of me because I would outshoot him! I told him he needed to watch his breathing, breathing is very important." Christine herself competed with the rifle, and different pistols including 22, 38, and 45 calibers. These shooting competitions were a fun filled family event. Christine remembers that while they traveled from place to place, they would pick fresh berries and vegetables along the way. Then while in the trailer, Christine would can the fruits and vegetables. Once at the events, Christine would then bake pies for everyone to share. It was a common joke amongst the competitors that Christine was just trying to distract them from the competition! The team members at Sumner Place Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation began a new and exciting program this year which focuses on enhancing Quality of Life for the residents they serve.

It has been about 60 years since Christine has fired a gun. However, Christine reminisces almost daily about her shooting years with Chris Westover, the Restorative Coordinator from Sumner Place. Together they discuss tricks and tips as well as share in their successes as professional shooters. Even as they see each other coming down the hallway, Chris will pretend fire a gun and Christine will then fire back and say “Ping!”

In knowing how memorable this past pleasurable pursuit was for Christine, the team of Sumner Place began making ar-rangements for this long distant memory to become a present day reality. The board of Izaak Walton’s League quickly agreed and was happy to be a part of this experience. They graciously allowed range time and offered any additional sup-port needed by Sumner Place. On Tuesday, October 6th, 2015 at the age of 93, Christine was taken to Izaak Walton's League shooting range where she unloaded a few rounds with a 22 caliber pistol. Standing right beside her, smiling the whole time, was her son, Michael, who recalled many fond memories of his mother shooting and the family trips that they would take to Camp Perry, Ohio for the National Competitions. On that day, it also just so happened to be Chris-tine’s other son, Patrick, birthday. Mike quickly text his brother with a picture of their mother with a caption “You’re not going to believe this but guess what Mom is doing!”

When the final shot was fired, it scratched the ten ring and Christine beamed, "I still got it!"

NEBRASKA D IVISION

October 1, 2015

Nebraska Game & Parks Commission 2200 North 33rd St. Lincoln, NE 68503 Regarding: Proposed Joint application for instream flows in the Niobrara River by Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) and Niobrara Basin NRDs.

This statement made in behalf of the Nebraska Division of the Izaak Walton League of America (NDIWL) having considered the issue at its September 27, 2015 state meeting in Alda, Nebraska. The NDIWL consists of 16 IWL chapters located throughout Nebraska from Imperial, to Wayne and Lincoln. Fol-lowing thorough consideration of available information we offer strong support for the proposed instream flow applications for fish & wildlife and associated recreation below the Spencer Hydroelectric facility near Spencer, Nebraska on the Niobrara River to its confluence with the Missouri River. The Izaak Walton League urges the parties to diligently work to perfect the applications as are needed to assure long-term conservation of Niobrara attributes.

One of the Izaak Walton League’s policies for water provides that; “Full consideration must be given to all environmental values affected by water management decisions, including scenic, recreational, and fish and wildlife values of in-stream uses of water. The League recognizes the need to leave certain rivers and other water resources free-flowing, otherwise undeveloped, and in their natural state.”

We further encourage successful and acceptable completion of the NGPC & NRBA Memorandum of Agreement and River Flow Management Agreement above and below the Public Power District’s Spencer Hydro facility. Success would assure these actions would leave a lasting legacy of better fish and wildlife habitat, and recreation for our uses today as well as those who have not yet arrived.

Submitted in behalf of: members of the Nebraska IWL Division as requested by Lurlie Campbell (Nebraska Izaak Walton League Division, President 2015-2016), 37125 Sodtown Rd., Ravenna, NE 68869.

Fall Trap League Completed

The fall trap league completed their last night of shooting on Oct. 1st with a total of 31

teams competing. Just under 50,000 rounds were shot over the six week league. Us-

ing the Lewis system for scoring, the competition was very close with longest run totals

from the rear for the team used to break several ties for the top places. The top four

teams will receive awards with those teams being as follows: Champions – Max Tan;

2nd Place – Where’s The Rock; 3rd Place – Norris Seniors and 4th Place – East #1. This

was a higher number of teams than we have had in the past and there were more teams

interested but wanted to shoot earlier than 9:00 p.m. thus next year we will likely use

six traps in order to accommodate more teams.

Trap Range Work For those of you that have been out to the Ikes ranges you have probably seen a lot of

dirt work on the trap range. During

the summer months, trees were re-

moved on the west of the trap range

and Brandt Excavation donated be-

tween 13,000 to 14,000 yards of dirt

to fill in the area as part of the trap

range expansion project. Gipson &

Ricketts completed a lead mining

operation down range and was able

to harvest approximately 165,000

pounds of lead which equates to ap-

proximately 2,350,000 standard

shotgun shell loads. Besides provid-

ing some funds back to the chapter it

is also an important part of our range

lead management plan. Once the

lead mining was completed Harry

Muhlbach excavated 11,000 to

12,000 yards of dirt from in front of

the existing trap house to improve

the slope and sight picture for shoot-

ers. It was moved to the west to

raise the grade on the soon to be

constructed Trap 7. This dirt work

is nearly completed thus we are now

ready for the installation of the new

trap house and walkway fan as well

as replacement of the walkway fan on Trap 6.

Electricians will be coming soon to take down all the existing

trap lights and poles and replace with new underground wir-

ing, lights, poles, and concrete bases for all seven traps. Dur-

ing this time there may be a short period that lights will not be

available on the practice traps. Along with all this work two

additional new Pat traps and two sets of Canterbury Voice Re-

lease systems have also been ordered. All this work has been

made possible due to several grants from a couple private

foundations to help support youth trap shooting. We thank

those members wanting to practice for their patience during

the dirt work.

A work day was completed on Oct. 24th on the trap range re-grading in front of all six traps, installing retaining walls and adding crushed rock in front of the traps. This will prevent mud from being washed down from along side of the trap house and collecting in front which was a real problem after a heavy rain. Along with that a long awaited drain tile project was com-pleted with drain tile from the six existing trap houses con-nected to a 700+ foot main drainage line running from Trap 1 just past Trap 7 and emptying just west of that trap into the di-version terrace. Approximately 40 volunteers showed up to help dig, shovel, lay drain tile, move railroad ties, etc. The volunteers were parents, coaches, and shooters from Lincoln Southwest, Pius, Lincoln Southeast and Pound. A special thank you goes out to Tim Hubbard and Troy Hansen, both Southwest parents, for supplying the trencher and the skid loader to take care of all the heavy dirt work grading and trenching. Also thanks to Kendra Hubbard for bringing out chili, cinnamon rolls and refreshments for the workers.

Wes’s Notes

Not much to brag about this month. Mentor deer hunting is going slow. Only one smallish buck harvested at the old landfill on No. 48th street so far this fall. And the venison harvest at the Desoto Bend early muzzleloader season was practically nonexistent. Only Clare, Dick Turpin’s youngest granddaughter bagged some meat of the 7 hunters in our party. Looks like beans and rice for this winter unless we get busy.

Chapter happenings

Yep, I did it. That is I put about 1100 renewal notices in the mail yesterday, so by the time you read this you should have it in your hands. Nothing has changed from last year. The fees remain the same and you still have two ways to take care. Either get to your account on the website at www.lincolnikes.com or get out your check book. Both options will get it done and we will do our best to keep up distributing the range cards etc. HOWEVER, if you have any problems or seemingly got left off the mailing list please give me a call. 466-9040

HELP Last month we mentioned that our chapter has applied for and received the litter control permit for a couple of miles of Highway 2 which intersects with our turnoff onto 134th st. The fall cleanup is set for Nov 7th and will start at 10 o’clock. We know there is a ball game but the deer season is a week away and you should have gotten your pheasants already by then. Won’t you please give the chapter a hand for a couple of hours? We plan to provide a bite to eat when the job is done and maybe a beverage. This will be a relatively easy way for many to give back to the club. But we really could use a phone call from you ahead of time, so the grub will be sufficient when the work is done. 466-9040.

There are lots to be said about all those industrious trap folks. They put together a gigantic workday last Saturday to go along with the transformation project on the trap range. Read on to learn and see what went on. Awesome energy was expanded.

That’s enough ramblin’ but remember;

“No one ever says “It’s only a game” when their team is winning.” From the desk of Bill

Miller
