iHiP dg jrc’s institutional history project Call for Expression of Interest (CEoI) In the light of the forthcoming 60th anniversary of the DG JRC and of the European Commission we are looking for volunteers that wish to contribute to the DG JRC’s Institutional History Project (iHiP). The initial idea was that an authoritative history of the DG JRC should be available. However, this is impossible to realise in the remaining time and therefore the overall project DG JRC’s Institutional History will be split into three sub-projects with different timelines: 1. Short term Communication-products for the JRC anniversary activities. 2. Medium term Streamline and digitize the JRC archive and produce historically correct highlights of the history of the JRC. 3. Longer term Realise a fully digitized, well organised JRC archive and write an authoritative and scientifically correct history of the JRC. This CEoI invites volunteers to express their interest to contribute to the short-term project that focuses on the communication-products for the 60th DG JRC anniversary activities that consist of three elements: ARTS-BOOKLET Artistic representation of the 6 decades of the DG JRC. STORY-TELLING Video-interviews with at least 2 key personalities and other JRC staff per decade, asking them for their subjective view on the DG JRC history. EXHIBITION Scientific instrumentation and documents from the 6 decades and 6 sites of the DG JRC. History can be seen as a mosaic of stories and pictures. The tiles of the mosaic were shaped by you that lived the JRC. That’s why we warmly invite all current and former DG JRC staff and family members to contribute to , , or all three of the activities under the iHiP. https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/about/ihip If you are interested in contributing to , continue reading here, otherwise go to or .

Call for Expression of Interest (CEoI)

In the light of the forthcoming 60th anniversary of the DG JRC and of the European Commission we are looking for volunteers that wish to contribute to the DG JRC’s Institutional History Project (iHiP). The initial idea was that an authoritative history of the DG JRC should be available. However, this is impossible to realise in the remaining time and therefore the overall project DG JRC’s Institutional History will be split into three sub-projects with different timelines:

1. Short term Communication-products for the JRC anniversary activities.2. Medium term Streamline and digitize the JRC archive and produce historically correct highlights of

the history of the JRC.3. Longer term Realise a fully digitized, well organised JRC archive and write an authoritative and

scientifically correct history of the JRC.

This CEoI invites volunteers to express their interest to contribute to the short-term project that focuses on the communication-products for the 60th DG JRC anniversary activities that consist of three elements:

ARTS-BOOKLET Artistic representation of the 6 decades of the DG JRC.

STORY-TELLINGVideo-interviews with at least 2 key personalities and other JRC staff per decade, asking them for their subjective view on the DG JRC history.

EXHIBITIONScientific instrumentation and documents from the 6 decades and 6 sites of the DG JRC.

History can be seen as a mosaic of stories and pictures. The tiles of the mosaic were shaped by you that lived the JRC. That’s why we warmly invite all current and former DG JRC staff and family members to contribute to , , or all three of the activities under the iHiP.

The ARTS-BOOKLET shall symbolise significant stages of the JRC’s history through paintings, drawings, or other artistic artwork prepared by current or former JRC employees (or their relatives) and inspired by the period they refer to.

If you are interested to contribute as a volunteer you will then get access to a second web-form to be completed together with a digital copy of your picture, drawing or other artwork. In that form you are asked to provide more information about yourself, the title for your artwork and a short text (<1 page) explaining how your oeuvre relates to the JRC’s history, which period, which event, etc.

We plan to have at least two pictures or drawings per decade, possibly accompanied with quotations from your text. In case we get slightly more there will be space. Should we get far too many, we will ask a group of JRC Alumni to select the best ones, up to the maximum we finally can include in the ARTS-BOOKLET. Furthermore we plan to upload an extended collection to an e-gallery.

If you are interested in also contributing to , continue reading here, otherwise go to or .

The idea behind STORY-TELLING is that we wish experienced colleagues and ex-colleagues to tell us stories that for them are significant for the development of the JRC and/or how it functioned during the different periods of its existence. By definition the stories will be subjective- and this is wanted. We intend to produce a series of snapshots, minimally edited and arranged along the timeline from 1957 (when it all began) to 2017 (after 60 years). An official institutional history of the JRC will be developed later.

We will publish a collection of stories electronically, with the name of the author and select with the help of a small group of Alumni, some that will be video-recorded and uploaded to the JRC Science Hub. Our aim would be to have 2 stories of senior, key personalities per decade, complemented by stories from staff members, possibly relating to the same events/periods but from other perspectives. Obviously, all depends on your contributions!

If you are interested to contribute as a volunteer you will then get access to a second web-form that you please have to complete. In that form you are asked to provide more information about yourself, a title for your story and a short text (<2 pages).

The sub-project EXHIBITION consists of 6 exhibitions, one per scientific site (Ispra, Karlsruhe, Geel, Petten, and Seville) and one for the entire JRC.

Each exhibition shall represent the history of the site from its early days to today by means of scientific instrumentation (including computer) and documents. The JRC-exhibition could be a combination of the 5 site-specific exhibitions or consist of additional items provided by each site. This will be decided at a later stage, once the site-teams are established and started working.

If you are interested to contribute as a volunteer, once the teams will be created for each site, we will communicate your name to the team leader who will then get in contact with you. It is left to the sites how they realise their exhibition but an overall coordination will be assured in order to allow combining the site-exhibitions for the JRC one.
