NPSS IS DEDICATED TO ADVANCE WOMEN TO THE TOP IN RESEARCH!

The gender matter in science and engineering is an important issue

and also a concern of our Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society.

Both society and universities/industries/laboratories must create

conditions that will help reduce this bias. IEEE NPSS is one of the

bodies which is active on this field, we try to find ways to improve

this situation of inequality. Our society realizes the importance of

female role models working in a male-centered profession or field

of study. Inspirational role models who have outstanding careers

are important guides to students and young scientists. We invite our

successful female colleagues to the WIE Sessions at NPSS confer-

ences to share their valuable experience and guidance. Special WIE

Sessions at NPSS conferences are organized with an objective to

provide the opportunity for exchanging ideas and information on is-

sues of importance, not only to the society of women in science and

engineering, but also of importance to the general public.

What is IEEE Women In Engineering (WIE)?

» It is the largest international professional organization

dedicated to promoting women engineers and scientists.

» It is the society with a mission to inspire, engage,

encourage, and empower IEEE women worldwide.

» It is the society of women and men who strive to

innovate the world of tomorrow.

WHY EXCELLENCE STILL DOES NOT MEAN EQUALITY!

It is well known that women face special gender-related barriers

to entry and success in professional and technical careers that

persist, despite recent advances. Significant evidence exists

demonstrating this bias:

» Women are paid less, promoted more slowly, receive

fewer honors, and hold fewer leadership positions.

» The under-representation of women is even more

striking in science and engineering.

» This gender imbalance in science wastes talent which

we cannot afford.

The concern lies not just in the interest of science, but also in

the interest of our society and our economy. This is a task for

society as a whole as any progress in this matter will be a gain

for all of us, men and women alike, and helps to build a better

future for all.

THESE SESSIONS HAVE:

» helped prepare high school girls to make an unprejudiced

choice regarding their study and careers in science and

engineering and give them a good background for that and,

» they have helped seal women’s academic pipelines to

minimize “pipe leakage” phenomena, and,

» they have helped overcome barriers for advancement

of women already working in science and engineering

including help combining a career with family life.

Many young women come to our meetings and take part in

WIE events. Successful women launched in their engineering

careers can, through these events, be role models and mentor

women students.

Let’s work together on changing any bias against women in

science and technology, recognizing that talent does not know

the difference!

Please join us to make NPSS a Professional Society with both

excellence and equality!

Drill down from ieee.org and be sure to come to the WIE ses-

sions when you attend one of our NPSS conferences and offer

to participate and share your own experience and wisdom.
