Screen TempoThis is a good example of an ident that utilizes tempo. The ident is cut to some fast paced music and the dancing feet all dance in time with it. It is an interesting ident because the sound goes perfectly with the visuals with different people jumping in and out to the beat. It uses the fast pace to keep peoples attention on the ident and to draw them into it. For me this is an interesting ident because there is no climax, the ident is just constant dancing not leading into anything, this doesn't mean it is a bad ident because this ident still conveys the type of screen tempo in other idents.

The ident that I have decided to compare with the ITV 2 ‘dancing ident’, I have chosen this specific ident because of two main reasons, firstly because this E4 ‘hotel room’ ident has lots going on (as you can see by the picture next to this text) now even though there is a lot going on it is quite a slow paced ident compared to the ITV 2 ident which is more up beat and a faster paced.

Space & Time

This is a good example of an ident that takes the opposite approach to space and time but still uses it effectively. In this ident the world that we are set in is clearly rural England as it is a dune setting for a BBC ident. To go with the target audience for BBC 1 it is quite a cinematic and sophisticated ident. With kite flying being seen as something for the adult generation. The people who inhabit the ident are these people. Adults and older people all having fun creating the circle with the kites. This is in complete contrast to the other ident in many ways. This is mainly due to the target audience but also the fact that the "Kites" ident is in the real world and has to show what the weather would have to be like to fly those kites. Whereas the other can do anything it wants because its in a made up world. However both are still effective idents.

This is a very good example of an ident that plays with space and time. This refers to weather an ident is set in the present time/past or future. And weather it is in a real or fictional place. BBC 3 have created a completely knew planet for their suit of idents and  have built it by mashing together lots of the fun elements of their channel and random elements from popular culture. The world revolves around the theme of tubes that carry pink goo that makes up the logo for BBC 3. The world seems very fun and carefree with the population of the world being flamboyantly dress people who seem to live for fun. This links into their target audience of being a young channel for young people and the design of their world reflects this. This is a perfect example of how designers can create interesting and new visuals specifically designed to attract their audience.

Information and entertainment ledThis is a very good example of an ident that is purely for entertainment rather than information. Apart from the small MTV logo in the corner there is no other hint as to what channel it is apart from the style the ident is made in. Instead the ident focuses on following the Alice in Wonderland figure around as she explores the interesting world that she is in. I think that it is an effective ident because it draws the audience in and really makes you want to follow her through this land and discover what is going to happen. And even though there is not an obvious thing showing that this is an MTV ident there is enough

that you can still tell who it belongs to but not focus on it.

This is an example of a suit of ident that is more information led than entertainment. It is still entertaining but the main focus of the ident is on the channels name and logo. All of the idents in the suit of idents use or incorporate the logo as the main feature of the ident. Making interesting graphics that use the logo as part of the ident. For example the ident that is laid out like a Rubik's cube has all of the challenge letters on one of the rotating plates. Then as they all turn round the logo is formed. It is hard now in modern idents to find one that is not primarily lead by entertainment but I think that these idents are a good example of idents that use the information in a creative way to attract their audience and keep there ident and channel in their mind.

Interaction with viewer’s

This is a very good example of an ident that interacts with its audience to engage them and make their ident memorable. The theme with this ident and the rest of the suit that it belongs to was to have channel 4's logo embedded somewhere in the ident and the audience tries to find it. Some of the idents are easier than others and this really makes the audience engage with the ident. This is a very good tactic for making an audience remember your channels idents. Because the ident makes the audience work to figure it out they will remember it for positive/negative reasons. I think that Channel 4's idents are one of the best examples of this.

Page 7: Idents

Density of information

This is a good example of an ident that is very simple and does not have huge amounts of visuals onscreen. This goes with the channels theme of being a premium channel that is in HD so the ident reflects this. The ident is very clear with lots of space throughout the ident. The information that is being portrayed to the audience is just what channel you are watching so there is no clutter of lots of information with TV listings. The theme of the ident is going through an HD window into another more exciting time so as the cat runs it briefly turns into a lion through the BBC's HD logo. I think that this ident is very effective at giving the audience the information that it needs in a very simple, clear and stylish way.

Branding

For this branding page I have decided to choose E4’s ident because it uses a prime example of branding, the main colour used in all of E4’s ident is purple, this colour choice is not just a random colour E4 have chosen, they always must use the colour purple because it’s there channels colour, for example if one day I started watching E4 and the ident was the colour brown I would wonder if I was watching the right channel, this is why the channel must keep there corporate colour the same as always. Further more E4 have created there own logo, (also purple) this logo has been created so people can easily identify the channel E4.

Packaging & re-packaging

ITV has changed their idents, they have basically changed them but have kept there identity, they have re branded the logos and the idents, but they are still advertising the same channel with the same programs. (the idents used to be a blue type of colour, now they are yellow)

Segmentation within Scheduling

The segmentation within scheduling is where and when the ident occurs. The idents occurs just after a program has finished and the start and also in the middle of the adverts. They do this to promote the channel if people are watching the adverts.

Page 12: Idents

Marketing

The type of marketing for a channel (for example BBC 1), they use idents (the circle idents) to promote there channel, in a sense so that there ident will be scene by the public, this will market the channel more because it will be recognized by a massive audience

IdentityThe identity of a channel (or a Channels ident), it’s all to do with the type of font and the logo. The use of the font, for example E4’s channel the font is custom (not used by any other channel), Also another part of the identity is the logo this can never be changed as it is symbolizing the channel and if it is changed the audience will not recognize the channel that is being shown.

SchedulingScheduling is an important part of any channel, it is basically what programs are on and at what time. For obvious reason certain channels are not allowed to broadcast any channel at whatever time, they have to what for the ‘watershed’, this is when the ore rude programs come on to TV (the water shed is at 8:30pm - 5:30am), and also we know that all the children's shows will be on in the morning. There is one more main part of a channel’s scheduling, ‘prime time’ this is basically the prime time of the day when the whole family sits down to watch TV this is why it is called prime time because they will be lots of people watching the television (prime time is usually around 9pm)
