Editor’s letterWelcome to ICT for Education’s 2017 Kempton Park conference, an event that I hope will inform and inspire your teaching of computing and use of ICT across the school curriculum.

Today’s conference will be led by José Picardo, assistant principal at Surbiton High School.

José will be joined by Karine George, a former primary school headteacher, who will discuss learning outside the constraints of the classroom; Samantha Badchkam, head of IT and computing at Waldegrave School, who will report on development of the computing and IT curriculum at Waldegrave; and Natalie Moore, education community manager at Apps for Good, who will provide an update on industry skills and describe how the Apps for Good programme could support your teachers and students.

Our guest speaker today is Andy Hutt, an educational ICT consultant who will present an informative and entertaining session covering some of the many free and low-cost ICT tools that can enhance your work in the classroom. If you’ve seen Andy at conference before, don’t leave the room, his presentation today is full of new ideas.

If you have questions for the conference speakers, join Question Time, a session that will answer your questions and debate topical issues. Then there is ICT Reviews Live!, an independent product review session that will put suppliers to the test and give you real insight into their product capabilities. And don’t miss the exhibition hall, where you can explore products and services for teaching and learning at your school.

The refreshments are on us today, so do take a break and have a chat with colleagues, speakers and suppliers.

I hope this brochure will help you navigate the conference and maximise your time. Have a great day and I look forward to meeting you.Best Regards,

Sarah Underwood Editor

Stand 1: Pobble

Pobble makes writing ridiculously exciting! Teachers use the Pobble platform to find the best teaching resources, give pupils an audience for their work, and to assess writing. For pupils, the platform offers a unique opportunity to engage with their peers, and for parents, it provides a unique way to connect with their child’s learning journey. The literacy platform was started in 2013, by a group teachers based in North Yorkshire, England. A true grassroots initiative, the founders aimed to inspire pupils by giving them an audience for their writing and to save teachers’ time preparing and assessing writing lessons. Before long, they were travelling throughout the UK visiting their partner schools and delivering Pobble into the classroom.

Pobble is hailed one of the UK’s top startups (#54 in 2016 by startups.co.uk, top 5 in EdTech in the 2016 Great British Entrepreneur Awards). It has been praised by authors such as Anthony Horowitz and Michael Morpurgo, and entrepreneurs like Martha Lane Fox. Finally, Pobble has gained the support of prominent education leaders, and partners like Microsoft Accelerator. Today, Pobble showcases over 100,000 pieces of writing, published by tens of thousands of teachers from all over the world. And this is just the beginning.

Stand 2: Soft Egg

Soft Egg is an education only, IT Support and Managed Services Provider specialising in Schools and Multi Academy Trusts.

As IT becomes ever more central to learning, it’s vital to understand the true cost when ICT doesn’t work as you expect. Just 15 minutes of small IT problems per day could cost you nearly 47 hours of classroom time per year. But it needn’t be like that.

Slow login times don’t need to happen. Slow internet and Wi-Fi dead spots aren’t a fact of l ife. Software should never be out of date. E-safety should be about confidence in your IT network, not paranoia. And networks rarely cause problems when they’re well maintained.

For many schools, one or more of these issues are facts , which rob you of classroom time. However, there is always a choice. A choice not to accept low standards, to raise expectations and seek qualif ied help. When we talk about IT support, we should talk about support for outstanding learning in its widest sense. It’s about removing the hurdles that stop you achieving more in your classrooms. And it’s about making IT the power for good that it can and should be.

Stand 3: Elementary Technology

We supply teaching and learning technologies such as interactive displays, projectors, visualisers, software and more to schools and colleges throughout the UK.

We also supply a leading range of visitor management and safeguarding systems, ensuring a school has a robust record of all staff, visitors and pupils who are on-site at any time. Safer, more efficient, more professional and excellent for OFSTED assessments of a school ’s safeguarding arrangements.

Elementary Technology also work with schools on their internal communications, with a particular strength in digital signage systems. Perfect for reception, the canteen, the staff room and elsewhere, keep people up to date, communicate news, welcome parents and create an outstanding impression.

So whether you need a single document camera or a full classroom audio-visual upgrade, as education specialists we can also support you with project-managed installation, advise on best practice and help you make the most of your technology.

We pride ourselves in our approach, acting as ongoing consultant partners, always visiting schools, always demonstrating in detail and always supplying free unlimited training.

Stand 14: Computing At School

The Computing At School group (CAS) aims to promote the teaching of Computing at school. CAS was born out of our excitement with our discipline, combined with a serious concern that many students are being “turned off” computing by a combination of factors that have conspired to make the subject seem dull and pedestrian. Our goal is to put the excitement back into Computing at school.

The Computing At School group (CAS) is a grass roots organisation, whose energy, creativity, and leadership comes from its members. CAS is a collaborative partner with the BCS through the BCS Academy of Computing, and has formal support from other industry partners. Membership is open to everyone, and is very broad, including teachers, parents, governors, exam boards, industry, professional societies, and universities. We speak for the discipline of computing at school level, inc. FE, and not for any particular interest group.
