• Topic: Photomontage
• To create a photomontage using digital images from the internet to depict a chosen issue in Society.
Year 10 Visual Art
Arts Outcomes
• Arts in Society: Students Understand the role of arts in society
• Arts Skills and Processes: Students use the skills, techniques, processes conventions and technology of the arts
• Arts Responses: Students use their aesthetic understanding to respond to, reflect on and evaluate the arts.
Specific Objectives
• Research and discuss montage as an art form (arts in society)
• Find and save appropriate images from internet on specified issue in society. (arts skills and processes)
• Successfully create a Montage by placing and editing images in Photoshop (arts skills and processes)
• Evaluate and critique own artwork (arts responses)
Prior Knowledge of Students
• Year 10 • Basic understanding of Art Techniques and processes through
Primary and early Secondary School
• Previous Guided Exploration of Art history in class
• Adequate practice of using internet, searching and saving images.
• Varying knowledge of Photoshop

• Step by Step written Lesson Instructions
• Research “mud map” worksheet
• Evaluation Sheet
6 steps of project over 3 lessons
1. Introduce concept of Photomontage
• Discussion
– Digital Art as Art form
– How montage is used in print media, Magazines Newspaper
– Discussion of montage in Dadaism, Pop culture (Punk)
2. Research Collage on internet
– Students to look for how artists use different Art elements and principles to show meaning, e.g.. Cropping, size, colour
– Record findings on mud map.
– Discuss Findings as a class
3. Students to choose an Issue in Society
• e.g.. Global warming, body image)
• Allow to briefly research Issue on Internet eg. The West Australian Website, Greenpeace, BBC, to gain visual ideas
• Students to brainstorm ideas on mud map
4. Gather images to create Montage
• Search internet to find appropriate images to include in montage.
• Create folder on desktop and save all images in it.
• Remind students to save as many images as they can as they can edit/ disregard later
5. Create Photomontage in Photoshop
• Follow Instructions on Printout
• Create new artwork
• Place each photo on new layer
• Crop and edit photos to create desired outcome
• Print Artwork on Photo paper
6. Reflection of Artwork
• Students to fill in reflection worksheet on their own artwork.
• Q1: In your artwork how did you use montage techniques to express your issue?
• Q2: In your opinion how do you think you could improve your artwork ?

• Arts in society: Assess the student’s contribution to class discussion and how their research influenced their final art work.
• Arts skills and Processes: assess composition of final artwork using digital techniques elements and principles.
• Arts Responses: how well did the student evaluate their own art work through written worksheet.
