I had the pleasure of being apart of this fantastic team and my first architecture family, Mateu Architecture, for two short years. In this time, I met some of the most passionate architects and designers who found passing on their design knowledge as important as their own design work.

For Ramon Arbesu, a man who gave as much care and attention to his work as he did to any person in his presence. I am forever grateful to have known you.

MATEU ARCHITECTURE

This family winter home is designed to maximize theuse of the wayfront property, locating most programspaces to take advantage of the magnificent views ofthe unique downtown Miami skyline and the visualexperience of South Florida waterfront living. The sitegeometry informed a design that allows a “saw tooth”solution, permitting guests to experience a series ofspaces that grow larger into the property and closer

to the bay one gets, culminating in the “great room”, the largest of the public spaces, with an incrediblepanoramic vista of the Miami skyline. The “saw tooth”as a design tool, allows the organization of the programto take place as intended and to occur in a correctorder and location relative to the site, orientation andfunction.

CASA ARNAU

The design for this sea faring coupleresponds contextually to the site by openingup most rooms of the program to the viewof the catamaran and the bay, whileproviding proper privacy from adjacentneighbors in an already developedcommunity. Entering the house on the ground floor, spaces are prioritized in order of importance, with the most important and public spaces toward the rear of the house, all blurring the edges between inside and outside, a privelage of living in South Florida. The upper level consists of the more private spaces with the master bedroom suite reserved for the rear of the house, enjoying the prime views to the south, east and bay.

The roof is also accessible by stairs and anelevator for rooftop parties with a stunning360 degree view, including a bocce courtand bar. Casa Arnau meets its programrequirements in a very simple, functional, yetdetailed imodernist way.

Located in Libery City, Florida, Superior Manor isa New Urban Development project that seeks to bethe catalyst for a long neglected neighborhood. This208 unit residential project, on a five acre site, consists of housing units that accommodate a diverse group of occupants in a variety ofsocio-economic conditions. The project includesdesigns that accommodate housing for the elderly,

multi-families, workforce housing, affordable housing and single families. The project has receivedoverwhelming approval from all community groupsand has recently been approved unanimously by theCounty Commission in its request for Land Usechanges to the Planning Code of Miami-DadeCounty.

SUPERIOR MANOR

CASA REISCasa Reis is a functional application of modern regionalism standing with a timeless elegance for a couple looking to replace their large existing home with a manageable one as they approach retirement. Open to itself and the water, the home allows the couple to live closely and happily together.

The site, located in Pinecrest, Florida is situated in a single-family residential neighborhood. The plot of land, being rather large than what the firm normally works with felt limitless. The land was covered in oaks, ficuses, and shrubs. There was one oak in particular, “el roble” (the oak), that encompassed a vast portion of the site. The project was then commited to encompass “el roble” as well. The tree, in combination with continuous groundcover, soften the appearance of the two story home to the street. Paired with sunshading devices, the western sun is no match for this family. The home is divided into two wings, the main living area running north

to south, and the guest bedrooms east to west. The living area is a double-height space that can be seen through any opening in the home providing an open, refreshing feeling. This feeling can be maximized by opening the glass doors on each side of the living area. It is contained only by glass and with the sun just right, or all six sets of doors open, uncontained.

Long known to work with the majestic backdrop that nature provides, the design team at Mateu Architecture envisioned and delivered homes that are unique both individually and collectively in their shared lush surroundings. The dwellings become part of the natural backdrop. Each house is built as a canvas for a family to paint its story.

Casa Vista is a quaint, mountain topvacation house with stunning views westand southwest, with the capacity ofenjoying beautiful sunset filled afternoons inthe Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia. The design concept is on that uses the house as a “wall” from the street. Only afterentering the premises, are you actuallyexposed to the breathtaking views for miles

beyond. Organizationally, an opencourtyard with a cantilevered spa acts as aan intermittent space, separating public andprivate spaces. Each of the three identicalbedroom spaces include fireplaces, a“bunk-bed” alcove for extended familygroup visitors and private decks.

The opportunity for five new town homesin Coral Gables, Florida is rare in such ahighly developed area. It was very importantfor these townhomes to speak to its immediate surroundings of single-familyhomes. The concept was to give solidarityto each unit with the goal of having thesetownhomes contain the positive qualitiesof single a family. First, the “Segovianas” meet the main street with a pedestrianscaled wall and garden. People living, working, and walking through this city canappreciate the scaled treatments of thisbuilding that disguises itself as five, moreaccessible buildings. Next, the townhomeshave privacy. Privacy from the street andeach other while maximizing light for eachspace in the home with an open courtyardthat is private to a single unit. While these

are three story town homes, most activityhappens on the ground level in a doubleheight living area which is off of the kitchenand the private open courtyard thatbecomes integrated into the living spacesthrough glass doors. The roof level providesan alternate living space as welll.
