expected to achieve average GDP
growth o 5% through 2015, more
than double the projected growth
rate o more mature markets.
In these hyper-growth
economies, including many parts
o Arica, IBM is broadening its
well-established base o skills and

A powerful presence
in Northern Africa
IBM has been driving innovation in North Arica since
1933 when the rst branch oce was opened in Algeria.
By 2009, at the launch o the Global Process Delivery
Centre in Cairo, IBM was building on 50 years o
groundbreaking collaboration with Egypt.
The Global Process Delivery Centre is a critical
component o our global delivery network. The ocus is
on outsourced services or IBMs nance and accounting
clients. Motivated teams with strong European language
skills deliver services ranging rom: business processoutsourcing to technical support and call centre unctions.
The centre is ullling Egypts plans to generate jobs and

between Egypt and IBM
created Eternal Egypt, providing
worldwide access to over
5,000 years of Egyptian history.
The project joins one of the
worlds oldest civilisations with
the latest innovations in IBM
technology. The outcome is the
richest information repository for
Egyptian cultural history availableonline today.
IBM funded Eternal Egypt
with a $2.5 million grant from
the Research and Services

Southern Arica has long been a critical part o
IBMs operations, rom opening in South Arica
in 1952 to our work today across the Southern
Arican Development Community (SADC).
IBM Arica Innovation Centres
Our Innovation Centres provide access
to training workshops, consulting services
and hands-on assistance to clients, local
partners, start-up companies, independent
sotware vendors (ISVs) and the academic
community to help solve business challenges
and bring new technologies to market.
Global Service Delivery Centres
The rst o two Global Service Delivery Centres
in South Arica created more than 500 jobs
in its rst year alone. The Centre was initiated
to oer outsourced support to over 250 large
companies rom Johannesburg. IBM aims to
capitalise on local strengths to support the local
and international market. In addition, a graduate
programme trains students rom previously
disadvantaged backgrounds to help them
secure employment.

dedicated to exploring rontiers in supercomputing. Hosted
by South Aricas Centre or High Perormance Computing
(CHPC) in Cape Town, Blue Gene is made available
ree o charge to deserving research projects, such as
modelling HIV-1 evolution; inectious disease treatments, management and prevention; climate modelling; alternative

With a worldwide shortage o technical skills, IBM is helping to ll
the void by reaching out to groups currently under-represented in
the technical workorce. EX.I.T.E. camps (EXploring Interests in
Technology and Engineering) across South Arica ocus on one
o these groups women in an eort to inspire and encourage
schoolgirls to take up careers in the technology industry.
World Community Grid
IBM and the Climate Systems Analysis Group at the University o Cape
Town launched a global computing eort through World Community Grid.
The aim is to improve regional models and enable better predictions to
be made about the eects o a changing climate in Arica. The project,
AricanClimate@Home, uses the vast computational power o World
Community Grid, a virtual supercomputer comprised o hundreds o

Accelerating Aricas economic
potential through Micronance
Micronance is the provision o nancial services to
low-income customers, who traditionally lack access
to banking services. Micronance institutions (MFIs)
have made a remarkable impact in Arica, yet in Eastern
nations like Ethiopia and Tanzania only one in every
100,000 people has a bank account. One o the actors
inhibiting micronance is the lack o a fexible, cost-
eective technology inrastructure.
IBM is working with National Micronance Bank (NMB)
o Tanzania to transorm its core banking technology
inrastructure. With IBMs help, NMB expects to
increase its capacity to launch more products and
services and take on more clients.
As business rapidly gains momentum across East Arica andthe entire continent, MFIs play a vital role. In Rwanda, or
example, an MFI with only $80,000 opened several branches
and provided millions in MFI loans.
Digital Villages
IBM consultants have been working alongside the
Kenya ICT Board and the Ministry o Inormation and
Communication to help spread IT capability and promote
economic development in rural areas as part o the
governments Digital Villages initiative.
Improving HIV treatments
In Ethiopia, an analytics model built by IBM is
helping doctors predict patient response to
multiple HIV treatments with over 78% accuracy beating 9 out o 10 human experts in a recent study.

The need or progress
becomes clearer every

resources unsustainably.
Arica has a wealth o natural

this value ends up elsewhere.
Raw materials are oten

These statistics prove the

to move up the value chain.
