Message to the People...As more “inclimate” weather is expected and as folks in the northeasterly part of the country prepare for another hit so soon after the devastation brought on by Hurricane Sandy, it is heartwarming to see the outpouring of support. This inclimate weather, says U.S. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX)can be attributed to global warming, which “we can not control.”According to Rep. Johnson, something could have been done, “If we had started earlier dealing with global warming but weʼre still trying to convince Republicans there is such a thing. It started back before Gore became vice president, warning us of what would happen if we did not address this issue. Weʼre seeing it now and many are still denying that global warming is an issue. It is an issue!”Researchers, citing the increase in national disasters--from tsunamis to hurricanes, attribute these occurrences to global warming-- the rise in the average temperature of the Earth--which according to National Geographic, most of the planetʼs warming in the last few decades has been due to emissions of greenhouse gases. Also, “the World Health Organization blames 150,000 global deaths on the effects of global warming, including extreme weather, drought, heatwaves, decreased food production, and the increased spread of vector-borne diseases like malaria.”Whatever the case, we have some work to do and we should be concerned about the world we leave behind.People from around the world are reaching out to provide assistance as families deal with loss of lives, homes and livelihood.Although it has been over a week since Hurricane Sandy hit her target, we are still hearing of families without electricity, the displaced families and the spike at the gas tanks where long lines wait for service.Of course when Sandy made her way up north, I received calls from those who know my family is situated in the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. One kind soul sent a text message inquiring about my familyʼs well-being, extending prayers, and then ending with an invitation: “Just want to offer my home to your family in Jersey should any of them make their way down here. We have plenty of room. Please let me know what I can do to help.”And there are others who called, emailed and sent text messages expressing their concern.Erick Wilson is also from the tri-state area but he and his family moved to the D/FW Metroplex about seven years ago. The host of a popular internet radio show, JTC X-Change, on DfwIradio.com, Mr. Wilson will be traveling to the east coast, more specifically, Brooklyn, NY, next week to deliver food, clothing and other non-perishable items.Thereʼs still time to help. Log on to www.jtcxchange.org and donate items or money. You can even donate gas cards!Mr. Wilson says he is excited about the prospect of helping those in need and he is looking forward to the almost 1600 mile trek. Those who know Mr. Wilson are not surprised to hear about his current effort. He is big on mentoring and being a source of support and inspiration. There are also other efforts. Annette Cullors, Rita Williams, Ms. Community-dianne  gibson,  CW Whitaker and Hollie Mays will host a $5.00 Red Cross benefit musical at Southwest Center Mall on November10, 11am-5pm.We have to be concerned when something happens in other parts of the country and world because you never know when your area will be hit.****

Statement by Joint Center President & CEO Ralph B.

EverettAbout the 2012 Presidential

Election

WASHINGTON, DC—The American people have decided that President Obama should be given another term in office to continue leading the nation toward economic recovery and expanded opportunity for all. Amid the rancor of the 2012 campaign, an electorate that was focused on the economy – and presented with two starkly different visions for fixing it – chose to support the President’s program aimed at balanced deficit reduction, job growth, health care reform and public investment in education, technology and infrastructure.

While Governor Romney fell short of creating a winning coalition, we commend him and his family for their spirited and enduring commitment to public service and to the very highest ideals of our nation during this hard fought campaign. We hope and trust that his party will continue its quest to establish a vision and message that will resonate with people of all races and from all segments of society.

The President and the new Congress now face the task of speeding up job creation, fixing the deficit, expanding prosperity and shining the light of hope and opportunity on every household in every neighborhood.

In light of the Joint Center’s longstanding mission to increase civic and political engagement across our society, we welcomed the President’s observation last night that the broadest and most impassioned participation in our elections is something to be celebrated. But we were also heartened that both he and Governor Romney sounded a clarion call for reconciliation and bipartisan cooperation. The American people deserve nothing less. We join in hoping that the passions of political battle will now pass speedily away and that there can be progress toward achieving the vision that the voters endorsed with their ballots.

The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies is one of the nation’s leading research and public policy institutions and the only one whose work focuses primarily on issues of particular concern to African Americans and other people of color. To learn more, please visit www.jointcenter.org.

The Journal of Steffanie Rivers:

Once when I was in high school a friend and I cut class together. We were smart enough to create a fake doctor’s note for the teacher, but we walked around the neighborhood where everybody knew us, knew we should have been in school and - unfortunately for me - knew my mother’s phone number. That was dumb. I’m not sure how many calls she received that day, but it only took one.

I was her only child. So my mother – a single parent - kept close tabs on me. Even though we’re only twenty years apart in age and I’ve stood taller than her since I was 11, she never pretended to be my friend. And to this day I can count on her to be the voice of reason in my life.

When I got fired from Wendy’s in high school because I forgot to attend an employee meeting, she called the manager and got my job back. And

when my car was repossessed when I was in graduate school she called the repo man on my behalf. Then she called me to say my car was waiting for me to pick it up. If your mother is like my mother her words carry a lot of weight.

Fast forward to last July: I had a written agreement with a business associate to do some work for me. And I paid him in full upfront. The work was to be completed in stages, but the final project was due no later than Oct. 31st, just last week. I was dissatisfied with the first draft and I told him so. I could tell he didn’t like my feedback, but business is business. Maybe if I got more involved instead of just letting it unfold I would be happier with the final project, I concluded. But the business associate didn’t see it that way. He didn’t like my “hands on involvement” and he told me so.

You never know what a person is capable of, especially when they know they’ve got the upper hand. A

simple business agreement had turned into a personality conflict. Now my irreplaceable information I gave him to complete the project was in jeopardy. For nearly three weeks there was no word from him. The last thing he told me was the project would be completed on his schedule – not mine even though I was the paying customer. Did that mean I would receive the final project next week, next month or not at all? Only he knew his intentions, but he wasn’t telling me.

My Halloween deadline came and went with no word from him. That’s when it hit me. I wrote a letter to the one person I hoped had his ear and was his voice of reason. I played the mother card. Within 24 hours of mailing the letter I received my finished project. If momma can’t reason with you nobody can.

How this happened...I want you to know that this wasn't fate, and it wasn't an accident. You made this happen.

You organized yourselves block by block. You took ownership of this campaign five and ten dollars at a time. And when it wasn't easy, you pressed forward.

I will spend the rest of my presidency honoring your support, and doing what I can to finish what we started.

But I want you to take real pride, as I do, in how we got the chance in the first place.

Today is the clearest proof yet that, against the odds, ordinary Americans can overcome powerful interests.

There's a lot more work to do.

But for right now: Thank you.

Barack

SURVEY GIVES THE LOWDOWN ON MEN'S SHAVING HIGHS AND

LOWS More than half of the men surveyed, a whopping 54%, disclosed that they manscape. [Click To Enlarge]Atlanta, GA (BlackNews.com) -- For generations, the typical American man has been clean - shaven, and over the years, shave companies have improved their gadgets and formulas to make the job easier and more effective. By now, one would expect men to embrace shaving. However, a new survey shows that only 14 percent of men enjoy the ritual, and half feel that they still lack something in their grooming kit.According to The Shave Survey (www.mmproducts.com/bumppatrol/pages/shave-survey) - third-party research commissioned by Bump Patrol and co-sponsored by The Source magazine - what men dislike most about shaving is the aftermath: 45% cited cuts, bumps and burns as shaving's worst troubles. About a quarter of the men c o n s i d e r t h e t i m e f a c t o r m o s t bothersome. Infographics of the survey r e s u l t s c a n b e f o u n d a t ShaveSurvey.com.Yet most men shave their beard every day or every other day, and apparently many more are kept busy shaving other parts of their body, too. More than half, a whopping 54%, disclosed that they manscape:- 42% of men shave their private parts, and of those who do, 70% have experienced razor bumps south of the border- 27% shave their chest- 16% shave their armsRazor bumps, or pseudofolliculitis barbae, are inflamed bumps on the skin that develop after shaving when sheared hair is trapped under the skin but continues to grow. Sometimes cut hair curls back and pierces the skin causing it to be ingrown, and other times it never leaves the skin surface due to the swelled, irritated skin around it. African-American men, in particular, suffer from razor bumps, since the affliction is more common among people with coarse, tightly coiled hair. Most men feel that the worst aspect is how the bumps look (41%), followed by the pain the bumps cause, the challenge to eliminate them, and the scars they leave. Men of all types appear to be susceptible:- 75% of men get razor bumps; 30% have them every week- 70% who use aftershave cite razor bump prevention as its primary function- 84% notice other men's razor bumps- 80% claim they would tell another man that he has a bump problemAn average of 10 minutes is what it takes to shave a face, according to most of the men surveyed. However, 10 minutes is about three times longer than it ought to take, according to experts who insist three minutes, start to finish,

should be long enough to do the job right. Otherwise, over-shaving could cause irritation. Knowing this, it is understandable that more than 60% said they lack confidence in their shaving ability, and only 35% think they do a great job. Yet, have men sought professional help, like a barber, for an expert shave? Not most. Only 45% have ever experienced a professional shave, and those who have, go only rarely. Is this because barbers are not considered their first go - to expert on the matter? When asked who they consider the most knowledgeable about shaving and caring for the face, 56% said a dermatologist and only 36% said a barber. So who taught men how to shave in the first place?- Most men, 62%, are self - taught.- 25% learned from their fathers- The rest had the help of a barber, friend, brother or another relative. And what did they learn? Apparently, half missed out on shaving's basic rule of thumb: Never shave against the grain. The direction of the razor can make a huge difference in preventing skin irritation and the ensuing razor bumps and burn. For decades, men have been known to use only the basics for their personal hygiene routine, like toothpaste, deodorant, soap and shaving cream. However, in this survey almost 60% of the men use a moisturizer. Are men finally coming around to realize that their basic routine needs a boost? Although it is likely that some are conv inced by women to use a moisturizer, when it comes to shaving, men tend to keep gals out of the equation:- 77% never use their significant other's products. If they do, however, they claim that it is a skin - care product like a moisturizer.- 85% purchase their own tools and supplies.- 49% say that women play no role and have no influence in their shaving habits.According to Information Resources Inc. (IRI), Bump Patrol has ranked No. 1 in the razor bump treatment category for 2010 and 2011. Its expert duo, the Smooth Crew, consists of Harvard - trained dermatologist Paul Wallace and veteran master barber Will Williams, who are dedicated to educating men on proper shaving tools and techniques. Bump Patrol and The Source magazine opened The Shave Survey to the public online during the months of May and June 2012. Moore & Symons marketing research firm tabulated the responses and results. For more information on men's grooming and Bump Patrol, visit www.bumppatrol.com and follow the brand on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

Recentralized phlebotomy practice at Parkland reduces cost, blood contamination rates

DALLAS – In a move designed to significantly improve efficiency and reduce specimen contamination rates, Parkland Health & Hospital System has recentralized phlebotomy services in its Emergency Department. After a two-week pilot of emergency department-based phlebotomists (specialists who draw blood) resulted in $122,000 in savings and an overall improvement in the quality of specimens collected, Parkland’s main emergency room is now staffed with six phlebotomists Monday through Friday with plans to expand to weekend hours and 24/7 coverage by the end of the year.

“When the emergency department transitioned to the patient care flow structure known as the pod system, nurses and patient care technicians drew the majority of the blood samples,” said Clifann McCarley, RN, Vice President of Nursing, Emergency Services. “But as our patient volumes soared, we decided it was time to re-evaluate this practice.”

While drawing blood might seem like a simple procedure, it can become daunting in a tense, fast-paced emergency room such as Parkland’s. The sole function of a phlebotomist is to efficiently obtain a blood sample so providers can begin the diagnostic process.

“It’s critical to get the blood draw correct because it’s one of the first things being looked at to get a good assessment

of the patient,” said Debbie Perrault, Vice President, Laboratory Services. “A phlebotomist is trained to draw your blood as quickly and painlessly as possible.”

Not only does an incorrectly drawn sample add up in costs, it also means another needle stick and longer wait time for a patient.

Added McCarley, “Drawing blood is a component of nursing care, but in an emergency room that sees nearly 10,000 patients a month, having expert phlebotomists onsite makes it a better experience for our patients and allows our nurses to focus on safe, quality care.”

By Donald Lee

Hello, my friends. I am truly excited that the Lord has called me to be a messenger of His Word, another voice crying out in the wilderness to “prepare, ye, the way of the Lord.” I am thoroughly convinced that the greatest pleasure in this galaxy, in addition to crowning Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, is leading others to Him and being used of the Lord to preach the Kingdom to them. Our Lord and Savior is soon to return. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance and with the greatest sense of urgency that we, children of God via the Blood of the Lamb, Christ Jesus, come into a complete understanding of who we are in Him and what our assignment is. We must, as a body of believers, know beyond any shadow of doubt, that we are the righteousness of God through Christ Jesus. We do not operate in our own righteousness,

b u t i n o u r h e a v e n l y F a t h e r ’ s righteousness. And to be righteous is to be in right standing with the Lord. It means we have accepted His way as b e i n g “ r i g h t . ” T h e r e i s n o righteousness outside of Him. But in Him, we are witness bearers of the Light of the world. He is the true Light that we, as saints of God, bear witness of. And with that, He has

also mandated us to let the Light in us shine so brightly that others are drawn to Him. So, we have a great calling, the greatest assignment that anyone in this universe can have, which brings us to the point the Holy Spirit wants us to get, and then flow with. The Holy Spirit is telling us: “ H a v e C o n f i d e n c e i n Yo u r Righteousness in Him.” It is imperative that you — that we —

are confident in who we are in Him and what He’s called us to be and to do here in the earth. Many souls are hanging in the balance. They must hear the message of salvation; they must be taught the ways of the kingdom; they must see a move of God in their lives as He moves in us. And in order for us to be efficient in getting our Savior’s message across to those souls all across the world, we must walk in the righteousness of God, and we must be confident in our “calling” to be ambassadors of His kingdom established here in the earth. In other words, we — the saints of God — must operate in our positions with authority, exercising great power and doing so with great confidence. When we do this, our confidence will win those souls over to the Lord. All of this having been said, please turn your Bibles to the book of Hebrews, the 10th chapter and the 35th verse. Something Natural

withDeborah Chambers

SPECIAL

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to help the body heal itself. Essential oils are the natural extracts obtained from aromatic plants. Essential oils are highly concentrated, and should be used with care or under the direction of a Certified Aromatherapist. They have anti-inflammatory, pain relieving, as well as anti-bacterial p r o p e r t i e s t o n a m e a f e w. Aromatherapy is widely recognized as an extremely effective form of complementary medicine, and is in no way intended to replace the treatment of a licensed medical practitioner.

The body utilizes aromatherapy in two ways: 1) through the sense of smell and the olfactory organ, and 2) by dermal absorption of the body’s largest organ – the skin. A good aromatic soak in the tub using Epsom salt and an essential oil or oil blend will relieve tired achy muscles. However, soaking in a bath may not always be convenient or even possible. The aromatic compress is an alternative to soaking the whole body, as well as an excellent approach to natural healing.

Swollen areas of the body such as ankles or knees can be reduced with a cool aromatic compress. The pain of strained or achy muscles can be relieved with a warm aromatic compress. Stress and tension can also be alleviated with an aromatic compress. The i s s u e a n d a r e a o f d i s t r e s s

determines the water temperature and steps of preparation for an aromatic compress. Adjust water temperature before adding essential oils. Always consult the advice of a Certified Aromatherapist, when unsure.

For areas of the body, the steps are as follows: 1) in a large bowl, pour 4 to 6 cups of water; 2) add 5 to 7 drops of an essential oil or an essential oil blend to water and mix with hand; 3) dip a hand towel in the bowl and let soak for a few seconds; 4) remove the cloth and squeeze out excess moisture; 5) apply to affected area.

For the face/ forehead/ neck areas (e.g. for headaches), the steps are as follows: 1) in a small bowl, pour 1 to 2 cups of water; 2) add 1 to 3 drops of an essential oil or an essential oil blend to water and mix with hand; 3) carefully dip a small face cloth in the bowl; 4) gently squeeze out the excess moisture and apply to face (avoid the eye area).

The aromatic compress is a perfect complement to healing. It is completely natural and utilizes the therapeutic properties of aromatic plants to strengthen and heal.

New Breed of Beauty Supply opens in North Dallas to meet

growing demand for products

A new specialty beauty supply store has opened in North Dallas to service the growing number of African-American women wearing natural hair. Naturally Divine Beauty is a full-fledged beauty store supply and natural hair salon at 3556 Forest Lane in Dallas. It is the first of its kind in North Texas.“Natural hair is not a fad, it’s a choice,” said Audra Cooper, the owner of Naturally Divine Beauty. The popularity of natural hairstyles has spawned a crop of specialty beauty parlors throughout the region, and shifted the economic balance of the $185 million black hair-care market.Cooper moved the store to its new location from a kiosk at Grapevine Mills Malls after the space became too small to handle the increase demand for products. The 1,500 square foot store and salon is a beauty boutique filled with carefully selected high-end products made by African-American owned companies popping up to meet the high demands of natural products made specifically for natural hair.  The salon offers an array of services including Twist Outs, Creative Cuts, Flat Irons, Blow outs and more!

Naturally Divine has over 25 options of natural hair care and beauty products. Most products are sulfate-free, alcohol-free, paraben-free, and free of harsh chemicals. Women with relaxed and naturally textured hair can use the products.  Some of the product brands include, Carol’s Daughter, Kinky Curly, Uncle Funky’s Daughter, Curly Junkie, Mixed Chicks and many more. Cooper has joined a growing number of African-American-owned companies catering to natural hair enthusiasts. Companies that once marketed exclusively to relaxed hair such as Proctor and Gamble, Revlon, L'Oreal, etc. are creating new products to coincide with other independent companies that cater exclusively to natural and curly hair textures. L'Oreal Paris plans to build a 513,000 square-foot regional distribution hub in Southern Dallas County.Naturally Divine Beauty has a calendar filled with unique natural hair events that include seminars, natural anniversaries-the celebration of the day you started your natural hair journey, and natural hair meet-ups.For more information call Audra Cooper at 214-350-4900 or log on to www.naturallydivinebeauty.com

Student with Autism creates short film

showing housing needs for people with

disabilities

Community for Permanent Supported Housing (CPSH) announces an animated short film called “Where Will I Live Without You”.  The film depicts a young man with intellectual and developmental disabilities who experiences finding a home with support services and realizes there are many people like him who need this type of housing.

“Where Will I Live Without You” was conceived, designed and produced by Cesar Jimenez.  Cesar is a senior at Jack E. Singley Academy, a career-oriented public high school in Irving,

Texas. He has won many awards for his videos and art work.

When asked why he worked on this film, Cesar said, “I decided to create this short film for CPSH because I wanted to help spread the awareness of the need for more housing for people with disabilities.”

Despite Cesar’s disability, he is using his talents to get a head start on his career.  This shor t f i lm i s h i s interpretation of the mission of Community for Permanent Supported Housing. Music and sound for this short film were produced by Susan Hersey, with SH Productions.

“The lack of enriched housing for adu l t s l i v ing wi th inte l l ec tua l /developmental disabi l it ies is an emerging social issue in the Dallas/Fort Worth area,” said Robin LeoGrande, Co-Founder and President of CPSH. “Because there isn’t enough housing, many parents are unable to plan sufficiently for the living environments of their children when they no longer able to care for them. Adults living with disabilities have been raised by their parents – their primary caregivers – in our communities and educated in our schools. The communities are unaware of the need for this housing as people with disabilities age.  The lack of housing is an issue that affects everyone.  If there is no housing available, these adults will become homeless ; requir ing community emergency services which are much more expensive than proactively creating housing.”

TEA commissioner visits DISD

Dallas Independent School District Superintendent Mike Miles had a special visitor recently on his regular instructional tours of Dallas ISD schoo l s : Texa s Educat ion Commissioner Michael Williams.   Miles invited the newly-appointed commissioner to tour three Dallas ISD schools:Roosevelt High School, W.E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy, and Felix Botello Elementary.   “It was important to me that Commissioner Williams get a first-hand look at the quality of instruction in our schools,” said Miles. “A lot of

changes are taking place in our schools and I am hopeful that today’s visit will help inform the commissioner of our needs during the next legislative session.”   Both the Commissioner and Miles wanted to avoid a rehearsed visit that turns into a media event so the visits were unannounced. Several classrooms were v i s i ted and both the commissioner and superintendent had several opportunities to both observe and speak with students, teachers, and principals. “I appreciate the challenges that Dallas ISD teachers and principals face,” said Williams. “I also appreciate the sense of urgency that I was able to observe taking place in the three schools. There is a lot of hard work taking place in Dallas ISD schools.”    Instructional visits are a regular part of Miles ’ weekly schedule as he assesses the challenges schools face and the progress being made under the Destination 2020 initiatives.  So far, the superintendent has been in 63 schools and is on track to visit all 223 schools by the end of the school year.  During some of those visits, he has taken other community and education leaders for an up c lose look a t the improvements and transformation tak ing p lace in Da l l a s ISD classrooms.

It comes to light that almost no one can be trusted - especially the officers.Rumor has it that there's a five hundred dollar bet against her making it through one year. Her pride takes over and now she must learn how to harden her skin, hold her head up high, and still make the inmates abide by the rules, all the while watching her back to make sure she leaves the same way she comes in.Can she handle the pressure and prove all the haters wrong?

Journalist and mom writes parent's guide

to help get scholarships for

students-- From cradle to crayon, preschool to prom, author Tonya McCleary provides parents with detailed advice on how your

child can graduate with a scholarship in hand.If you want your child to attend college and keep your retirement, this parent's guide is a must read. Motivated by a desire to see their children achieve their own version of the American dream, McCleary and her husband began a journey that focused on getting their children excited about learning, prepared for achievement, and ready to turn obstacles into opportunities. How To Get Your Kid In College And Live To Tell The Tale provides parents with some insight into the long and sometimes tedious process that runs the gamut from standardized testing to college tours. It is a guide to help you guide your child into a bright future while keeping your sanity. It is a quick read that will keep you referring back to it for the valuable information inside. The McCleary family has lived in Oklahoma, Missouri, Florida, Texas, and Ohio and use the unique experiences found in those places to prepare their children for higher education. Both their children received several full and partial scholarship offers

throughout the country from some schools both large and small. Each is now attending college on full scholarships at Historically Black Universities. McCleary is a veteran TV news journalist who has spent more than 25 years in broadcast news producing, reporting, and management. She has mentored journalists throughout the country and continues to do so. She

plans to continue to work in journalism and is pursuing a Masters of Marketing and Communication and hopes to teach on a collegiate level. She believes writing this parent's guide was a GOD-idea and will continue to help parents work on getting their kids to college. How To Get Your Kid in College and Live to Tell the Tale shows readers what happens when "Mother Wit" meets "Mother Necessity" - pure gold that could help save parents
