A Father’s LoveThe Saturday morning call was one I will never forget. I had just

talked to Demarcus on Friday night and he told me of plans to spend with his daughter over the weekend. Our conversation was so short and I’m just thankful that I have always shared my thoughts with him, because I don’t have any regrets and he already knew how I felt about him.

He knew that I applauded his efforts as he worked to take care of Aaliyah and her siblings. He also knew that I was proud of him and his plans to attend college and build a better future.

It was such a joy to watch the big smile on his face as he talked about working to better himself. He was focused on being a better father to his children.

With nine children, Demarcus did a yeoman’s job taking care of and spending quality time with his children. He loved them each equally and enjoyed family outings -- whether it was going to the park, visiting theme parks, fishing, going to the movies or to a school event; he had a presence in their lives and I know he will be missed.

Upon hearing of his violent death, all I could say was “no, no!” My heart was so heavy as I processed the information that Justin Pharez Smith (no relation to me) went on a killing spree that left two women and Demarcus dead and another woman fighting for her life.

In news reports, the shooter is described as a “gifted student” attending the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and a leader in his fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi.

This was a strange picture painted of this man who ignored the woman who begged him to spare her, instead shooting her and then kicking her to ensure that she was dead. Fortunately she feigned death and lived to provide information to the police.

J-Dog, as Justin was known around Dallas, sits in a jail cell on a $1 million bond.That news is nothing worth celebrating because it won’t bring back Demarcus, Tyteanna

Lyahanee Brown and Kimberly Montgomery. Too many have been the victims of violence. Sadly as I talked with others from across the

country about the senseless acts, many showed no emotion because it has become so prevalent. Someone told me, “Hey, I’m from Chicago!”

It seems like an ordinary day in the hood for many --nothing to get worked up about.I beg to differ, however. To give up and accept things the way they are is as big a travesty

and tragedy as pulling a trigger.Demarcus was only 37 years old. A baby. He was so well liked -- such a respectful,

humble person. There are so many men out there who are not taking care of their children. So many children will be born into this world and leave without ever knowing their fathers. And here is a man who honored his commitment to his children.

I took the cover photo of Demarcus with his youngest daughter, Aaliyah. We were out at Olive Garden having lunch in mid July and I seized the opportunity. Some say it was the last picture that Markie or Pac (folks say he resembled Tupac Shakur), as he was affectionately called, took.

I’ve heard so many folks talking about what a wonderful man Demarcus was. They mention his giving nature, genuine and kind disposition, and ability to fit in wherever he goes.

Demarcus was a good man and he always left a favorable impression. He wanted his life to matter. I sincerely hope that his children will take heed by striving to be the best they can and also lifting as they climb.

Finally, I hope that more adults will do as Demarcus did and show some love to our children. It could make the difference in their lives, especially those who don’t know what it is to experience the presence of a man.

Congresswoman Johnson released the following statement on the 25th anniversary of the passing of Texas Congressman George Thomas “Mickey” Leland:

“It is hard to believe that it was 25 years ago today that my friend and mentor, Mickey Leland, passed away. He was a steadfast and caring leader from whom I learned so much from,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “He made a lasting impact on Congress that has helped shaped our country’s focus to aid parts of the world that were suffering from extreme hunger. His legacy can be felt today through young leaders that are being trained in the Mickey Leland International Hunger Fellows Program at the Congressional Hunger Center in the nation’s capital. He died as he lived; bringing attention to the plight of refugees in a part of the world that sorely needed our help.

Congressman Mickey Leland was a transformative leader, not only in Texas but throughout the world. He began his political career by being elected to the Texas State Legislature from the city of Houston. Soon after his term began, Congressman Leland traveled to Africa and found the calling to which he would dedicate his life, ending hunger throughout the world.

Congressman Leland was elected to Congress in 1978 to represent the 18th Congressional District of Texas, filling the seat vacated by Congresswoman Barbara Jordan when she retired. He was a progressive leader that twice chaired the Congressional Black Caucus. He also took his life’s mission to the halls of Congress where he helped to form the House Select Committee on World Hunger in 1984.

With the support of anti-hunger organizations, Congressman Leland was able to overcome opposition in the House of Representatives that argued that the Select Committee would be a waste of money, or would infringe upon the duties of existing committees.

The Select Committee generated awareness within Congress regarding national and international hunger, and prompted a bipartisan effort to find solutions to end hunger in the U.S. and around the world. Congressman Leland also led numerous humanitarian trips with his Congressional colleagues, allowing them to witness firsthand the hunger crisis that was plaguing Sub-Saharan Africa. Due to his efforts, Congressman Leland was frequently called the “conscience of the House” by colleagues.

Congressman Leland made a lasting impact that can be felt today through the Congressional Hunger Center. Former Democratic Congressman Tony Hall, a close friend of Congressman Leland and former chair of the House Select Committee on Hunger, joined Republican Representative Bill Emerson to form the bi-partisan Congressional Hunger Center in 1993. Soon after its formation, the Congressional Hunger Center established the Mickey Leland International Hunger Fellows Program to serve as a living legacy to Congressman Leland and his world-changing work to end hunger. The Mickey Leland International Hunger Fellows Program trains emerging leaders during a two-year period to eradicate hunger worldwide.

DCCCD students’ experiment, dreams crystalize in space (Dallas/Houston) -- Like ideas, crystals form, take shape and grow. They become snowflakes, diamonds or salt. They also could assume new characteristics when chemicals in those crystals might become altered in the zero gravity of space. Countless elementary school children have grown sugar crystals on a string in science class – rock candy. But only a select group of students from Eastfield and El Centro colleges in the Dallas County Community College District’s system have tried to crystallize sodium acetate under zero-gravity and near-zero-gravity conditions. Six of those eight students – the 2014 DCCCD NASA team – spent a week on the ground and flew parabolas in the sky (on NASA’s famous “Weightless Wonder” jumbo jet) to test their experiment. They wanted to learn how a sodium acetate crystal might look when grown in zero gravity in super-saturated sodium, compared to the effects of regular gravity on earth. DCCCD’s team was one of only three community colleges in the country chosen to participate in a 2014 Reduced Gravity Education Flight as part of NASA’s Minority University Research and Education Program. A total of 13 colleges and universities from across the country were selected to test their experiments in flight. NASA’s space- and researched-based programs and testing include educational outreach that is designed to promote careers in STEM fields: science, technology, engineering and mathematics. NASA is particularly interested in minority students who are enrolled in colleges and universities because they typically are underrepresented in STEM fields. With the support of DCCCD’s outreach office, team members Salvador de Leon, Christopher Pleis, Valeria Lujan, Samuel Rodriguez, Stephen Todd Stovall and Maureen “Moe” Tucker (team leader) – accompanied by advisors Dr. Kendra Wallis, physics professor, and Richard Post, biology professor, from Eastfield College – trekked to the Johnson Space Center’s Ellington Field in July with the experiment they designed and the questions they wanted to answer. (Team members Eduardo Aguirre and Eric Edwards were unable to go to Houston.) Lujan grew up when the U.S. space program had become “routine” for many Americans. Several generations had witnessed first flights, first steps on the moon and first shuttles. Lujan’s generation was witnessing the end of the shuttle program, the wane of space travel – perhaps the end of an era. But Valeria doesn’t look at it that way. Anything she saw or read about NASA and space travel excited her when she was in high school. Little did she know that

her love of space and science would take her into zero gravity on NASA’s “Weightless Wonder” this summer. “I was always ‘into’ NASA things and space travel when I was growing up,” she recalled. “I am super-excited to participate and to be involved in the process, but I’ll be glad when we finish and have the results of our experiment, too. Creating and preparing this experiment for the flight has been like taking another class.” Late last fall, the team had only a few weeks to design an experiment when they learned about NASA’s Reduced Gravity Flight Education Program. “We brainstormed for three to four days and chose to test the effects of microgravity on crystallization. We spent the Thanksgiving holiday working on the proposal so that we could meet the December deadline,” remembered Lujan. Their efforts paid off. The team was notified in January that the experiment was a “go” – NASA evaluated proposals based on scientific merit and education outreach potential. The work began in earnest then as team members worked on the experiment, conducted research (growing crystals from different sodium acetate solutions) and recorded everything for NASA, including diagrams of the crystals they grew in 1G, or Earth’s gravity. “We spent lots of time in the lab, participated in monthly videoconferences with the program director and participated in community outreach efforts – which were part of our requirements,” added Lujan. “We were like ambassadors for the program. One of our team members planned strategies with the STEM Club at Eastfield. As members of the Eastfield Science Club, we visited several schools and demonstrated our experiment, too.” Aguirre, who is majoring in electrical engineering, told the Eastfield Et Cetera, “Being on the team means going above and beyond what is normally expected at DCCCD. The challenge given is unlike anything else given in the classroom.” “The Reduced Gravity Education Flight Program is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for teachers and students to propose, design, build, test and fly a microgravity experiment aboard NASA’s microgravity aircraft,” said Sarah Gonzales, NASA education specialist for RGEFP. She added, “Students involved in the program test their experiments on board while the aircraft flies approximately 30 parabolic maneuvers over the Gulf of Mexico. The parabolic patterns provide about 30 seconds of hypergravity (about 1.8 to 2 Gs) as the plane flies to the top of the parabola. Once the plane starts to

‘nose over’ the top of the parabola and descends toward Earth, the students experience about 15 to 25 seconds of microgravity – they are in free fall. That’s when they conduct their research. During the team’s stay in Houston, the DCCCD students prepared their experiment and adapted the method they were using to conduct their research in double containment. They placed their experiment inside a box created by NASA, which created a double containment that preserved the experiment in the extreme environment of the parabolic jet flight. The box created its own challenge for the team because they had to be able to work with the seed crystal in their sealed solution without opening the jar (they ended up using a magnet). Members also spent a day with NASA scientists, who visited with them and reviewed every team’s experiment – making suggestions and sharing observations along the way. And then the DCCCD team flew on the jumbo jet – a small group of students among a handful of people in the world who have experienced the thrill of zero gravity. Now they are assessing and analyzing their results. The entire process taught the team many skills, according to Lujan. “Team work, responsibility and dependability are at the top of the list of skills we learned,” Valeria said. “I’m not doing this for a grade. I decided to do it…to stick with it – and everyone who started is still here. We’re a team.” Lujan added that the team itself is special not only because of its work and the trip to NASA. “Two of our team members are parents. One member is a mom, and she goes to school. I am a full-time student, and I work part time – about half of our team go to school full time and the other half attend part time. About half of the team members are the first person in their families to go to college, too. Several are transferring to other schools, like Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University; two are going to the University of Texas at Dallas to major in engineering. Once she has finished her degree at Eastfield, Lujan wants to major in chemical engineering. “This entire experience is still kind of unreal,” said Lujan, “but programs like this one have gotten newer generations excited about space.” For more information about the Reduced Gravity Education Flight Program, visit http://reducedgravity.jsc.nasa.gov.

America has endured a long and painful history of voter disenfranchisement. There were times when minority citizens were forced to pay poll taxes before they could exercise the right to vote. Many died in the fight against discriminatory laws and practices to secure the right to participate in America’s democracy.

I have also experienced the unjust practices of voter disenfranchisement during my youth under the Jim Crow laws in Texas.

In June of 2013, a five to four majority ruling by the United States Supreme weakened the Voting Rights Acts of 1965.

The ruling allowed states like Texas, with a long history of discriminatory voting practices, to reinstate practices, such as stricter voter identification laws that are designed specifically to dilute the number of minority and student voters.

During the 2014 Texas State Republican Convention held in North Texas, a platform was released requesting that the Voting Rights Law be repealed in its entirety.

The law, against which they have waged a war, is a historic piece of legislation signed into law by a Texan, former President Lyndon Baines Johnson.

The Voting Rights Law is recognized by fair-minded citizens as one of the most important pieces of civil rights legislation in our nation’s history, and we must not allow it to be further weakened or discarded.

The Texas Legislature has yet to draw redistricting maps that give minorities a fair chance of electing minority representatives to Congress in areas where minority representation is clearly warranted.

That is why I am currently participating in litigation demanding that minority voters be treated fairly in Texas.

I am in full support of the proposed legislation written by Democratic Congressman John Conyers and Republican Representative James Sensenbrenner that would require certain states to seek approval from the Justice Department before making changing in its voting practices.

Under the proposed legislation, states that have had at least five irregularities in Voting Rights practices would be subject to federal clearance and oversight. Counties and cities where at least three violations occurred within a 15-year period would also have to seek federal clearance before making changes to their voting laws.

This is to insure that those areas of the country

with a history of voter disenfranchisement do not revert to discriminatory tactics aimed at marginalizing minority voters.

In addition to restricting existing voters, many states also restrict the voting rights of men and women who were convicted of a felony, but have repaid their debt to society.

Eleven states still continue the practice of restricting voting rights of those who have served prison time.

Attorney General Eric Holder said earlier this year that the practice disenfranchises African-American citizens, and other racial minorities.

When the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, its majority held that the oversight of voting practices in states was no longer necessary. This is far from the truth.

Perhaps, there will come a day when we no longer need the government to provide protections for racial minorities.

That day has not yet come. And until it comes, our government must ensure

fairness and equality in voting for all of our citizens, and our citizens must be vigilant to fight to protect this constitutional right.

Celebrating the life of Demarcus Andre Walton

He had a smile that would light up any room and a heart of gold.

Demarcus Andre Walton was born November 19, 1976 to Deidra Hampton and James Walton in Tyler, Texas.

His early school years were spent in Tyler, Texas and after the family moved to Dallas, Texas, he attended David W. Carter High School.

Following his graduation, Demarcus attended Dallas Can Academy for Electrical Wiring and Blueprint Reading. He worked as a licensed apprentice electrician for Bolen Electric for 10 years. He also worked for Gatesco Medical Supply as a contract delivery driver for Walgreens Pharmacy.

Respected and loved by many, Demarcus believed in family and was known for being a strong, loving and supportive father. Frequently he was at the park, circus, community events or other family outings with his children. Demarcus was such a generous man that on many occasions when on a family outing, he would include other children along with his.

Demarcus departed life on August 2, 2014 and leaves to cherish his precious memories: his sons Demarcus Andre Lightfoot Walton, James Hamp Walton, and Fredrick Lee Walton; daughters Cautious Renee Lightfoot Walton, Conscience Lois Lightfoot Walton, Curiosity Catherine Lightfoot Walton, Neriah Walker, Mariah Walton and Aaliyah Smith Walton; his maternal grandmother Lois Hampton of Forney, Texas, mother Deidra Franklin of Summerlin, NV; father James Walton of Dallas, Texas; brothers Kendrick Walton and Rashad Walton of Dallas, Texas; aunt Allyson Mitchell of Dallas, Texas, James C. The idea of seeing a movie about the life of Mr. James Brown was exciting and worth clearing my calendar for. After all, could the Godfather of Soul have a more ardent fan? Admittedly I was unfamiliar with Chadwick Boseman and I could

think of at least three actors I would have

loved seeing in the lead role, and neither would be Eddie Murphy!

Just coming off rave reviews for his portrayal of baseball great Jackie Robinson in the movie, 42, Mr. Boseman quickly transitioned into the “hardest working man in show business” in Get on Up.

It was hard to imagine anyone alive moving like Mr. Brown and I didn’t want to have expectations so high that they were unrealistic. Then, too, there was the good, the bad and the ugly of Mr. Brown’s life and I wondered if I could stomach any jokes or negative depictions of this great man, no matter how accurate.

Still I was determined to go into the screening with an open mind and the realization that there would never be another James Brown.

It actually took two viewings for me to accept the Mick Jagger produced /Tate Taylor directed production and it was interesting to note that even Mr. Jagger had reservations about Mr. Boseman’s ability to master the moves of one of the greatest performers of all time.

I concur with Mr. Jagger’s assessment. Mr. Boseman was outstanding. His mannerisms, gestures and dance moves were all on point and a joy to watch.

Sure there are scenes that are not totally accurate. We’re talking entertainment value here and clearly some parts of the movie were an over-dramatization.

With the release of the movie, I also came to the realization that there is a huge segment of the population that professes to be big fans of the Godfather and there’s also a segment that is just learning about the man and his great works. They were also unaware of his philanthropic and advocacy efforts.

There’s a scene where Mr. Brown (Boseman) talks about the influence he has had on the

music industry. It would have been great to have seen examples, but, at a run time of two hours and 18 minutes; you couldn’t show everything and you couldn’t satisfy everyone.On many occasion a critic has expressed displeasure that singer/girlfriend Tammy Terrell and protege Michael Jackson are not included in the storyline.With stellar performances from Viola Davis, Tika Sumpter, Jill Scott and Dan Aykroyd; Octavia Spencer as Aunt Honey and Nelsan Ellis as Bobby Byrd were

definite scene stealers.It was equally pleasing to look up

and see Dallas’ own Liz Mikel portraying Mr. Brown’s assistant. Ms. Mikel’s performances are always captivating.

And there was Brandon Mychal Smith capturing the essence of Little Richard.

Taking on the task of someone like James Brown is no small feat. Director Taylor, using the script written by Jez and John-Henry Butterworth attempts to provide a look into what made James Brown

who he was, from childbirth to his comeback after his release from prison.

Coming in at a strong third at the box office during its first weekend, Get On Up, continues to get rave reviews. The music is a definite plus. Anyone who could sit still through the entire movie without bobbing their head or swaying, well I’d check their pulse to see if they are among the living.

This movie is destined to garner some Image Awards. It’s definitely a contender for other awards, like the Oscars and Golden Globe.

When you take on such an iconic figure, you can expect varying responses.

“Brown was a consummate showman and courageous visionary, and through ‘Get On Up,’ we are able to see sides of him that we never knew,” said Marc Morial, CEO of the National Urban League. “I encourage everyone to see this movie.”

I have full custody of our 3-year old-daughter, and I need your advice. Every time I get my daughter back from her mom, I get nothing but attitude and temper tantrums. She spends every other weekend and holidays with her mom and as soon as I pick her up, my daughter starts repeating the negative words and the negative actions she has heard and seen from being with her mother. How can I stop the temper tantrums and attitude without punishing my daughter because I know it’s not her fault? I used to just ignore it but lately it’s getting worse.

Sounds like Miss Sassy-Classy is driving you mad and you’re not sure what to do about it. One things for certain: she a Baby-Sponge-Bob, soaking up every ounce of what she sees her Mama doing, and she can’t help it. First and foremost, here are three things I want you to remember:

• It’s just for right now, it won’t last always.

• Don’t worry about who’s watching and don’t be embarrassed by her actions.

• Don’t take her actions personally, she’s three, not 13 and she REALLY doesn’t know any better.

When she offers her color me bad attitude, bless her with kindness. Think of it as reciprocating her fragile heart-canvas with soft, bright vibrant

colors, restoring the rainbow that’s inside her. You should counter

every one of her negative words with a positive word. Redirect every one of her negative actions with a positive reaction, and compliment her afterwards. I know it won’t be easy and it’s more work than you’d care to do after a hard day’s work, but welcome to parenthood. Besides, she’ll only be in “renegotiated rehab” for about 24 hours. Once she’s back at home with you, in her own space, reverted in her old routine, I bet it’s all good.

Toddlers learn by direct imitation; that’s what they do best. Remember how you imitated a big brother or super kool uncle? It’s the same pattern. Cut her some slack. She misses her mother, no matter the circumstances.

I’m so glad you’re aware this is not her fault. You’re already way ahead of the game. When you get an extra minute, check out my sweet-pea, Jade, on Facebook under the community page “Single Parenthood.org.” It’s a great place for single parents to connect, share and refuel.

Allow me to remind you Kideem, as I’m sure you already know, be careful you don’t say anything negative about her mother in front of her. Ever. I know they’ll be times you’ll need to vent. But save that for your best friend. She should always hear you speak kindly and respectfully of her mom. Those words will fill her spirit bowl and allow her confidence cup to overflow.

Studies by theUniversity of Texas atDallas Institute of UrbanPolicy, United Way andTexas A&M are takingplace now to assess thequality of life in the SouthDallas community beforebillion dollar projectsinvolving the new DARTLight Rail and the Trinity
