i publisher’s note

Going over ideas and while sitting over a cup of coffee with our team the word ideation popped into my head.

Where do ideas come from?

Are any ideas truly original in this day in age, or are they bi-product mash ups of what ideas came before and just added upon and changed around and dropped into a think tank library. In the not to distant past

this creative process of ideation was left to the elite few. In their smoke chambered office a team sits in

quietude till one man speaks with expected precision and eloquence. Nowadays Pandora’s box of ideas is wide open

and impossible to close. We have an exponential increase in science & technology, mathematics, ideas for agriculture, architecture, art movement, infrastructure, advertising,

communication platforms like facebook, myspace, the list goes on and on. And yet there’s still room on this over flowing tower of Babel for more, in fact we need ideas so desperately for humanity to move forward and survive.

The real problem to solve is how do we switch from the

old stagnant mind frames of the past and integrate through to our new limitless potential? Whether it is

new artistic innovations, revolutionary concepts, computer assisted discoveries, or symbolic ideas, it’s pretty clear that there is always a need for clear sound ideation.

bookbandoDD FuTuRE - FREAkTAsTIc ANTIcs FIllED To ThE BRIM

i review

A generation of Los Angeles rebel rappers - 10 teenagers of the same hip-hop skater “family” - are paving quite winding paths of an odd, odd future for themselves. Yet, any future’s odd, really. What lies ahead is a great unknown cast unto infinitum by shadows and flickerings of the not yet now. Odd numbers are uneven; odd creatures are unusual; and kids with ODD have an ongoing pattern of disobedient, hostile, and defiant behavior toward authority figures which goes beyond the normal bounds. That about fits with the whole modus operandi that Odd Future reps. How righteous and deep that goes is anyone’s guess.

The aggro-anarcho surrealist clan is led by a 20-year-old troubadour who goes by the name Tyler, the Creator. Odd Future (or OFWGKTA, an acronym for Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All) puts out tracks that spit in your face, smack you upside the head, kick you in your groin, and verbally obliterate anything outside of their schema of cool. In addition to Tyler, the Creator, Odd Future is: Jasper Dolphin, Domo Genesis, Matt Martians of the Super 3, Left Brain, Mike G, Frank Ocean, Hodgy Beats, Taco, Earl Sweatshirt, and lone female member, Syd. An Odd Future show is not one at all without them delivering rhymes with razor-sharp fluidity and criminally smooth dance moves, stagediving, moshing, and antogonising the crowd. They establish a glassy, unperturbed position from which they operate further allowing all sorts of nihilst, rapey, uninhibited carnage stream from their fountain of freak.

Odd Future doesn’t so much as walk you hand in hand through the park on luscious waves of lyrical simplicity but rather friendly-like grabs you round the neck upon greeting you at the door, spins you in circles a few times over, slaps your back (a little too hard) then sits you down in a corner and in song form orchestrates a bone-shattering lecture on the kookish times we’re living in and why it’s no wonder so many are jaded and breaking down or wigging out. However depraved that sounds, the frustration and bitterness that comes from growing up fatherless, as many of the members did, being raised in turbulent neighborhoods, and witnessing injustice on a number of levels is not a sob story or convoluted rant but instead - a potent harnessing of dark inner powers being channeled into their music and raw, enrapturing performances. And while they’re criticised for waxing poetic or negging hardcore on middle American stupidity, white men in suits, homosexuals, and women - when have any of these topics not been standard fare in the rap game? And who wants to take it so seriously anyway? Best believe, Odd Future is a group of driven, young creators with a lot to say and they’re doing so in their own schizophrenic way. They can seem gruesome. They can seem reckless. They can seem contradictory, mental, and just not down to give a flying füçk about anything..... so let them. As long as all sorts of mind-boggling doctrines, storylines, newscasts, filth and slander and mad overseas reports keep cropping up in our world today, Odd Future is free as ever to break it down however and whenever they want, angsty teenage charm and all. It’s as much their prerogative as it is yours... long live screaming from the outside in, jaw-dropping candor, and colossal wordsmith bombs.

Swich is swishing and sizzling these past three months, giving 66 areas a new choice for healthy and easy breezy food. Inspired by and catered to most Aussies in the neighborhood, Swish provides wide variety for sandwich lovers, from meat to vegetarian to jam and Nutella to something that you can ‘create your own’. You can select your bread; white-brown-baguette-ciabatta-foccacia-wrap bread, and either to have it your way or go with their all-time favorites, such as The Classic Bacon & Egg Roll, Chicken Lettuce & Avocado, Ham Lettuce Tomato in Tortilla Wrap, or be more ‘green’ by choosing their vegetarian selections.I love the refreshing sensation from their ‘east meet west’ vegetarian sandwiches where tofu and tempe blend deliciously with their secret mayo and crunchy veggies. Don’t forget to mix your own salad, that’s fun, and with their reasonable price makes your lunch experience even more fun here!

You can’t go wrong in this earthy green point among the line of ‘From Dusk till Dawn’ scenes of Dhyanapura street. Happy Falafel provides selection of condiments to be put inside your pita pocket. There are hummus, tabouleh, olives, carrot, beetroot, grilled pepper, jalapeno, etc to spice up your falafel feast, and it’s quite fulfilling for the empty stomach, and satisfying for those who already had too much booze in their belly from the next door bars.

From ‘create your own’ falafel, you can also choose Lamb Moroccan Style, Beef with Indonesian Spices, or Chicken with Barbeque Sauce. The rest are the usual sandwiches; BLT, ham & cheese, chicken curry, and the other specialties such as Gyros and German Bratwurst.

They also have list of salads and pasta if you want to opt for other than bread types of meal.

Don’t think of East Java food-where Malang is located- when you read the name of this restaurant. Warung Malang by Pak Slamet is specialist in seafood and Chinese food. And God bless Pak Slamet for his recipes coz everything you can taste here is seriously good, and most importantly very very cheap!

Spotted in light blue color painted walls –very unusual for a restaurant- this place seems never stop buzzing. The locals, the tourists, the expats, all race and age, are willing to come to this spot, even for some reason it can be quite tricky to be found. But all the efforts are so worthy the minute you scoop their foods into your mouth.

Whichever rice or noodle you may choose will give you the same satisfaction. Combine them with Cumi Lada Garam, Ayam Koloke, Buncis Muda Saus Sechuan, Angsio Tahu, and Fuyonghai for the complete tasting experience. I just heard my stomach making sounds as I finished typing this…

WARuNG MAlANG

Despite of its name, Waroeng Asia is quite a favorite among westerners; as I sat down here I hardly notice any yellow or brown skin guest, they’re mostly pink! Yes, those who’d been in Bali for a while must be familiar with the authentic and ‘easy’ Thai taste from this restaurant, and undoubtedly it’s popular among the tourists. Nested in a cozy corner of 66 and Werkudara streets, this place can be quite busy, especially at dinner time. They have wide variety of Thai food and drink selections and totally recommendable for those who love Asian delicacies with affordable price.

Try their regular Thai specialties, such as Curry, Raw Spring Roll, Tom Yum Goong, Pad Thai, Pineapple Fried Rice, Chicken in Pandan Leaf, Beef Salad, and the one ‘must try’ and yummy Mango Sticky Rice dessert. You can wash your taste bud after with Thai Ice Tea or just go for cold Beers, both will blend with your foods just fine!

hA sN ’T B E EN y o u R oWN Exp E R I E N c E . This article and attached photo shoot is not about the journalistic sensationalizing of Kerobokan jail, nor the many infamous stories surrounding the place. In fact, what follows is a feel good story based upon someone making the most out of a situation. A pretty messed up situation. I mean, we all know the rules in this country and if you run the gauntlet, you know the consequences.

For over six years Myuran Sukurmaran has been in Kerobokan jail, something I can’t even begin to imagine. I felt nervous asking any questions actually, in fact I felt like he should be asking me questions about what the hell is happening on the outside. Lessons in life come in various forms. Some like a slap in the face, some like a head-on car collision with no seatbelt. Myuran’s is closer to the later, ending up in Hotel Kerobokan with a one-way visa. This was my first experience inside. This was the first time I met a guy on death row due to trafficking drugs in an Asian country. The hauntings of watching Midnight Express as a young child appeared like a shot-gun hole to the guts. My juvenile comprehension of the frustrated miserable hellish paradigm of an Asian jail was closer to reality than ever before.

One thing you have to understand, I am not here writing this as a pledge to the Indonesian Government to reassess the tough drug rules. No. I am not trying to say sentences should be reduced. This is not my point. This magazine is about creativity. The theme this month is about ideas and turning them into reality. And this guy is sitting here making the most out of a situation, regardless of his motive, regardless of his past; this is now, this is something we support. Everyone deserves the right to change, to re-invent oneself. I mean, shit, who wants to retain that old-school ridged ‘no change’ attitude to life. Fuck that, didn’t someone say change is as good as a holiday. And we all like holidays. Well, what kind of holiday do you have when you are locked up between four walls within an environment that certainly isn’t the most creative environment? Hardened criminals, whack jobs, crazies, and people who just shouldn’t be there at all. Not much fun and not an easy place to get creative. As far as I can see, the only chance you have to go on holiday is personal change. So whatever your thoughts are about the Bali Nine, take a leaf out of some higher person’s book of empathy and read on with a positive view.

MYURAN SUKURMARANBy Gil Cowan and Andrew Campbell

What part of Australia did you grow up?i was born in London, but i was brought up in Sydney, australia with my younger brother and sister. My family all still lives there in australia.

What was it like growing up there and at what point did you get into designing/producing fashion?i started a Bachelor of arts at the university of Western australia. But really, i started getting into fashion as a way to escape the doom and gloom of prison. i read books on fashion designing for dummies!

Bali9 – Tell us about this brand, how did it begin?it began six years ago when i got caught for smuggling, i hope now the term “Bali Nine’ can develop a new connotation or meaning about rehabilitation, starting new, and second chances.

Bali9 – well we know how the name came about … do you feel you are marketing an infamous brand and do you think the fashion industry is ready for a brand where its director/owner is a designer sitting on death row We’ll see soon

When it comes to designing, do you have an idea first or do you just improvise? usually i have an idea or theme and just go from there. i have a lot of time to think and reflect hence the first title of my collection.

Who inspires you? You mentioned that certain artists come in and visit - who are they and how do they influence you?Nico Virilink and theos Sijrier, a couple of Bali based Dutch artists whom are regular visitors and they guide and mentor me about art. i have learned a lot from them both.

Where do you derive your influence from?at the art room. and from the random things that happen daily inside this place.

You may well face the death sentence? If yes, why do all of this?i am sentenced to death. i am doing this to try and inspire and give hope to other inmates, teach skills which will prepare them when they get outside so they have a better life.

How many others in Kerobokan are being resourceful like yourself?Siyi chen – runs the silver workshop and Mathew Norman runs the English course.

Where do you plan to sell your product? Bali or overseas? In Bali firstly, then in Australia. I am hoping to get my sister involved if it takes off.

What were the challenges in getting these facilities set up inside the jail and how long did it take?it’s been active for one and a half years and it took a year of pushing to get this started. it’s been liaising with the head of the prison and workshop, they have been supportive however it has taken some time. all the supplies take a little longer to get here but they are getting here!

Who is anyone anyway? Is it so important we pretend to know each other through social media personas? If you don’t know someone, I guess you just don’t know them do you?

So, do we know Cuci Sofa? No, all we know is we received an anonymous package in our office the morning after we discovered artwork wheat-pasted to the front wall of our shop-office. Yes, he tagged us, the cheeky bugger. The packaged contained a bunch of photos and artworks with another cheeky but well written letter along the lines of publish this or else! Now threats annoy me about as much as my evil multi-coloured pin-wheel curser on my Mac laptop that spins and makes me wait all the time. We thought of conducting somesort of witchhunt. In the end, we cursed. We laughed. We gave up.

Reluctantly and under duress, we present to you this alien hybrid artist as he begins his rage of artistic flare on the streets of Bali. His sarcastic spin on Bali’s mixed racial pop-culture will not go un-noticed. Lock up your munted daughters and start graffeti-ing the walls in your neighbourhood before he gets there first.

WHO IS CUCI SOFA AND WHAT IS BLACKSHEEP?

On July 15th Cuci Sofa will show works at BLACK SHEEP, #69 Jalan Drupadi Seminyak, Bali. It’s located just in front is the store YOKII. He will be showing selected works from CUCI SOFA and DAY ONE 2012 in the Gallery /slash/ Bar behind the store which by the way is amazing and has the only rice paddy /slash/ sunset view in town. You will Jizz your pants and probably get a free drink to boot which I hear for 2011 is the must for any party. Yokki sells t-shirs and masterful creations that are silkscreened by the imfamous Craig (aka “Mr T-Shirt”), here in Bali. FYI he is a Genius. Anyway, if you are not in Bali at this time then for the love of God set your time machine to 2027 then hop on the corner free public transporter device, set it to July 15th 2011, insert the time~fluX ad-on thats compatible with MAC OS 13 via fire wire optic convergence cable and use this URL: http://img.chan4chan.com/img/2010-06-09/1276078208878.jpg then BLAM! it will take you straight to the BLACK SHEEP 5 mins before sunset right when shit kicks off. If you are here in Bali then what the fuck? You gonna waste your time at other venues when you could be mingling with honest to goodness time travelers? Only high class mingle with time travelers DAHling. Dont be a tool. The unveiling of BLACKSHEEP...

TRAN TRADEMARK FROM TRUNG’S TRUNK Tran Trung Linh is a rebellious Vietnamese artist, he’s a product of the war generation, and perhaps that’s why there are hints of violence and irony in his strokes.

Artwork is all about communicating the artist’s thought and emotion which often come in forms of controversy and it may recognizes no label. You can love one and hate the other or be entertained by some and puzzled by the others –despite if it has a meaning or not, it’s not necessarily needed to be understood.

However, it’s always intriguing to see what’s lurking behind those colors, textures, compositions and messages from the artist’s canvas. Before we splattered by the vibrant world of Tran Trung Linh, and before you step your foot onto his exhibition in KuDeTa Artspace this month, let’s find out what brings him together to this island, again, for the third time.

Page 47: I-Mag 2 #7

47

Page 48: I-Mag 2 #7

48

i portfolio

So, it’s your third time having your exhibition in Bali?Yes, but it’s only the second time I am here. It’s amazing to be spending more time on this cool island. What brought you here on the first place?Me and Rhett Hutchence, we discovered each other in Vietnam, and then I feel he’s the man who can keep and walk with my paintings. In Vietnam I have exhibition every year too, but it’s only when I get out, I feel better, I feel free. And in Bali, Rhett, and everybody else, seems like they get my meaning. I feel I have a space to write my mind into the canvas. That’s why I come here.

Wanna tell us what’s your third exhibition is all about? There’s reasonable fear of the rising of the material world, and at a time economy charges this important role, the obsession of consumption is everywhere.

The material world is crucial to some extent, but its duty is nothing but serving mankind in this universe. I’m obsessed by the idea about human. I don’t focus attention on the new arrival of this exhibition or brand. I just don’t care about the 2011 version. The crucial thing with me is the fate of people around.

Undeniably, the material world has its attraction. It penetrates, sneaks in and out of every persons characteristic, just waiting for its time to knock down their pride. That’s a subjective point of view about a society, temporarily in a Consumption Culture Age. Controversially, the material civilization sinks itself into the nightmare of self destruction...

With the spirit of protest, and looking for the true value of life, this exhibition is my stamp onto the impermanent marks or deliberate signs of life. Just stamp it deeply, to remind myself of standing out and looking for a true nirvana.

How do you define yourself as an artist? Do you have a word to signify your work?I became an artist without reason. I just feel I can’t live without a brush, color and ideas. When I was a child, or now getting older, I still wanna satisfy the desire of my hand moving on the canvas. It’s like destiny or something, and there’s only one word to signify my work: fighting.

Page 49: I-Mag 2 #7

49interView d i a z

How did it all begin? When did you lavish your very first stroke that tells you that you’re becoming YOU?When I finished with art school, I used think about nothingness, but wanted to paint about something. For so long this kind of nirvana... And then I realized I had to grow up. I was unable to see the beauty of unreal things. Then suddenly I jumped into life, the naked bittersweet life in front of me, and I saw ME. It’s so hard for me but I think that I have to be like this. As an artist, I’d like to give a voice for people without one, if I could. I don’t make political art, I make art politically.

What kind of medium do you use to paint?I use acrylic. It dries fast as I think. When I have an idea, I don’t have time to waste, so this kind of medium is perfect.

I notice your works often emphasize spiritual, pop and cultural icons merge with your ‘messages’, is that your way for expressing something?I just think it’s a simple way to talk with everybody. Strong or not, depends on ones sentimental reason.

Have you got any strong reaction from writing sarcastic texts on your Buddha paintings?Actually I’m vegetarian, nearly like a Buddhist. They are not sarcastic words. I read Buddha books, and I was trying to find something from him. He didn’t tell me you have to do this, you have to do that. Just let it flow. The things I text on these paintings, I mean what if, what if I bring some bad thing with him, what do you think?

I feel there’s parody in your work, does art supposed to be funny?I used to say pop-art is not funny. The most defining characteristics of my work relinquish seriousness. I turn it into ridicule because the way we laugh when we talk, is the easy way. It’s close. Life is hard, so let’s find another way to make it better in peace. But this is a bitter smiling.

Do you have to be triggered by something when you make your art?Lots of. First, here, I have to answer the same old question, “What is this, what is that”? They don’t understand, or don’t know what the hell icon I use. Second, does it have any concern with this society? And many more questions. I just keep silence. I don’t

wanna talk. Painting’s gonna talk. Like I said, all around the world is one. So if you don’t get it, let other people get it.

Artist’s works are mainly controversy, do you consider yourself controversial? I go straight. I know what you mean, but with me, when I see my long way, I’ll walk. Maybe I’m gonna fall down, but I’ll stand up and keep walking. Of course controversy is always on our mind. So it’s on my mind. It’s the struggle I have to carry all my life. Paint this thing, paint another thing...I don’t care what they said about my paintings, I am who I am.

Are you always this…“vibrant”?Can’t be true artist without being “vibrant”.

How’s art progression in Vietnam by the way? It’s hard to tell. Sure we’re on the way to develop. But there are too many things to do. Contemporary art in Vietnam right now is the most talked about thing. But to me, I don’t think they’re right. Every artist, please just go back to the workshop, working hard, let the soul fly, that’s all. Then it’s growing up like itself. Conception, style, ideas…in words, is the thing I don’t care about. One thing I’m sure of is the way I create art. Vietnam young artists should stop to talk, I think.

Any famous artist or icon or just anyone that you feel might has connection with your work?I love Bacon, a little Andy, some Egon Schiele, Banksy works and Obey technique. I’m not saying they’re my idols, I admire them. Because I think I’m still not good. I’m still to learn. Learn to paint, learn to live.

Do you have any big plan for the next few years? After this and some more exhibitions, I’m gonna finish a movie script. Filming is inspiring to me. Look at David Lynch’s works. And I wanna do something. I wish I could have more time. I wish I could have four hands and two minds.

Okay Linh, thanks for your time. Any last message you’d like to say before people step in to your exhibition in Bali this time?Come as you are, I swear I don’t have a gun!

"® Made in Tran Trung Linh", will be held at KuDeTa Artspace from June 29th to August 4th 2011

IT cAN BE sAID WE NEED To DREAM IN oRDER To suRVIVE AND WAkE up.

Christopher Nolan’s newest film Inception is at the crux of this month’s theme Ideation. It’s the type of film you can easily watch over again, take apart its clues and ponder the notion of how dreams and ideas create or destroy our reality. What is the nature of dreams? Scientists now know that during heavy REM sleep our brains pump out doses of N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) a naturally occurring psychedelic compound of the tryptamine family. It can be said we need to dream in order to survive and wake up. The film takes on a psychedlic nature of what dreams may become, how they can change, crumble, or lay down a path for the dreamer. Are you sure your not asleep while youre reading this? How do you know that the ideas that popped up in your mind are your own, or were they was just planted there?

What might look like a set of simple seascapes at first glance actually reveals an exciting and dynamic experience. Patrick Richard’s photo exhibition at Kendra Gallery is like a composition of stories just beginning to unfold in front of your eyes. You are invited to become the witness of moments in time and space.

The photographs are mainly scaled on a landscape format that accentuates the endlessness of the sea and the sky, magnifying the contrast between the immensity of nature and the tiny presence of humans, passing actors in the infinity of time.

The individuals he catches a glimpse of naturally exude tranquility and peacefulness rather than solitude. They seem to connect in a silent communion, surrounded by a protective sphere where the craziness of the world has stopped for a moment. The boundlessness of freedom emerges in every shot, awe-inspiring.

Patrick’s incomparable touch transforms this exhibition into an heartening journey, urging every one of us to take a deep breath of serenity and recall the quintessence of life.

This exotic aromatic tall grass which contains essential oil & flavanoids is a native of India and has been highly regarded by herbalists & ayurvedic herbalists throughout India, Indonesia & Malaysia for centuries.

Lemongrass oil is valued for its refreshing exotic citrus scent which is a relaxant, assisting to reduce headaches and irritability. The oil scent also acts as an insect repellent & is an ingredient in citronella candles & products and is also added to soaps & perfumes. The inclusion of the oil in shampoos & conditioners combats against oily hair.

Lemongrass is known as a 'detoxicant', ridding a patient of poison or its effects, a 'carminative', causing expulsion of gas from the stomach or bowel, an 'anti-inflammatory', acting to reduce certain signs of swelling, tenderness, fever and pain, and an 'analgesic', a remedy that relieves or allays pain, making it an effective remedy for pain associated with headaches, toothaches, muscle & joint pain, rheumatism, arthritis & gout.

It is extremely effective against bacterial & fungal infections and is a great detergent for the growth of mould.

It has the ability to prevent food poisoning & is an extremely valued combat fighter in diseases such as malaria & typhoid.

Internally, it assists with staph infections, stomach & urinary infections and infections of the bowel. Lemongrass helps greatly in the cleansing of our digestive & circulatory systems by removing excess cholesterol, uric acids, fats & toxins, strengthening functions of the stomach and promoting proper digestion. It also eases symptoms of gastric irritability, indigestion, nervous dyspepsia, flatulence & bowel spasms.

Externally, it is an excellent wound cleaner & aids in the treatment of tinea, athletes foot & all skin afflictions. A paste made of the leaves mixed with buttermilk is a brilliant treatment for ringworm, lice & scabies. Lemongrass oil mixed with coconut oil produces a stimulating ointment for rheumatism, lumbago, neuralgia, sprains & other painful afflictions.

Did you know that if you plant a lemongrass wall around a desired area it will repel snakes?

Seminyak beach is back to looking clean and clear with hardly a trace of garbage to be seen, the sky is clear blue with streaks of red and there is a light offshore breeze caressing the lines of swell as they explode on the sand bank. The sun is slowing disappearing behind a band of clouds on the horizon and tourists and locals’ alike frolic in the ocean, play hand ball, drink beer and gaze at the famous Kuta sunset. It really is an ideal scene straight out of one of the tourist brochures.

This is in stark contrast to the same spot a month ago when only the brave would have risked ear infections, throat infections, skin infections and any other form of disease to venture into the stinking brown foaming plastic filled ocean. Just to make it to the shoreline one would have to weave through mounds of plastic, dead fish, and all sorts of flotsam which all just added to the less than idyllic beach scene.

This situation has been occurring for years with each year becoming progressively worse. The rains of the wet season flush out all the plastic litter, dog poo, dead cows and anything else that has ended up in a street gutter or river in Bali (or Java) to the ocean; with an onshore west wind all the garbage and filth is blown back onto the beach creating a scene where a writer from ‘Time’ magazine, Andrew Marshall can state that a holiday in Bali is a holiday in hell.

The Time article which appeared in April this year caused quite a bit of controversy as it listed ongoing problems which locals, ex-pats and repeat tourists have long been aware of; problems such as the rolling blackouts, litter, water table depletion, overflowing sewerage treatment plants, septic tank seepage, rising crime and probably the most obvious, the traffic congestion which has become ridiculous.

Bali’s Governor Made Pastika agreed that there is a problem which is being taken care of with efforts such as the recent moratorium on new hotel developments in southern Bali. Meanwhile in Jakarta, Minister Wacik said high winds rather than poor governance were responsible for Bali’s dirty beaches, claiming that litter was blown onshore from elsewhere. He dismissed the Time article as an exaggeration (Bali Times 11/04/2011). It really appears that the government will not act decisively or quickly enough to address these issues and the Tourist boom will continue with new shopping centers, villas and hotels being built to keep up with the thriving tourist industry without adequate measures in place for the development of the required infrastructure able to cope with this rampant building frenzy. Bali, especially southern Bali has become a victim of its own success as more and more people want a slice of the magic of Bali. Local journalist, Wayan Juniarta stated that ‘it is like Bali is slowly committing suicide’ which unfortunately seems to be the case.

However, all the issues which Bali is presently facing are in fact really the same problems that the whole planet and humanity is waking up to. As a species we have been shitting in our own nests for too long with little regard for the natural environment, other species and our own species future survival, never mind quality of life. It seems as if we all are slowly committing a worldwide suicide. The more this becomes obvious the more it seems certain groups and individuals want to shout down the facts and ignore the situation and continue to go on with business as usual.

The most obvious environmental challenge is manmade climate change caused by the release of CO2 into the atmosphere by industry through our addiction to oil and coal. 2010 proved to be the worst year ever with record amounts of CO2 being released into the atmosphere which has killed the prospect of keeping the global temperature rising at the 2’ Celsius threshold, which many scientists believe is the temperature needed to limit global warming to safe levels. The future looks as if it will be full of severe climate impacts, flooding, storms and rising sea levels which will have flow on effects to world agriculture (food shortages), mass migration, and no doubt new wars over the fight for resources.

There are many skeptics, both individuals and lobby groups who deny the scientific facts regarding manmade global warming claiming, to quote a leading Australian politician, Tony Abbott, ‘it is all crap.’ They seem to believe it is best to keep using up our non renewable polluting resources without any investment in new clean technologies, because this may cause some financial hardship in the short term, a case of covering your eyes and hoping for the best outcome down the track.

The fear campaign in Australia which has been pushed by climate deniers, the Murdoch press and other interest and lobby groups regarding the increase energy costs is laughable. Australia is one of the wealthiest countries on the globe and Abbott and his cohorts are barking on about slight increases in electricity bills and petrol prices. It seems some Australians are more concerned with having a 60 inch plasma TV and new V8 car than leaving a decent clean planet for their children. Why are sections of the population listening to these spin doctors? If you are sick you do not go and ask a politician or mining executive for help, you go to a doctor as they know the science of the human body. Why are some people listening to these politicians and lobby groups who have no idea about the science of global climate and following them down this path of ignorance, and attacking scientists that have knowledge on the subject they spend their life quantifying and studying?

Globally, according to Oxfam the world is entering a era of a permanent food crisis, half of

which is being caused by climate change along with a combination of other factors such as depleting natural resources, a global scramble for food and land, food crops being replace for bio fuels, and population growth. Population growth really is the big fat pink elephant sitting in the corner of the room which no one wants to address. Basically there is just too many of us on this earth with its limited resources, and as population grows so does the demand for the already dwindling global resources. The mantra of continual economic growth which is based on continual population growth and unlimited energy is just not sustainable. In the wealthy west population growth has slowed and there is a problem of an aging population while the developing countries of the world have huge population growth which many cannot afford to accommodate which has the potential to lead to extreme poverty, hunger and social unrest. The World Bank last month (April 2011) that recent rising food prices have forced an additional 44 million people into poverty.

We are polluting (Plastic Island twice the size of Texas in the Pacific) and over fishing our oceans, clearing our forests, using up resources and destroying the natural world around us like we can buy a new one when it is broken and used up. There are no easy solutions but it is obvious we cannot continue as we are as a species, and clean renewable energies have to be found to replace the old world polluting energy sources, global population growth has to be addressed (no matter how much it upsets the Catholic Church and other religious groups) and senseless consumerism and waste minimized. The best way to slow the birth rate and improve the standard of living of communities in developing countries is by helping people especially women out of poverty through education and human rights.

As humans we have to recognize our common humanity and that we really all generally have the same aspirations for life and start to look after and respect our only home, the planet earth, which means looking after each other. This will require a change in our collective consciousness and how the world is presently being run, the alternative of not changing our ways is a much more frightening and bleak scenario. The old adage ‘think globally, act locally’ applies here and everyone can contribute in some way.

Here is Bali Coca Cola has started to keep the beaches clean, groups such as GUS www.gusbali.org, Surf Aid http://www.surfaidinternational.org, and ROLE www.rolefoundation.org are helping the local environment and improving people’s lives. We are all part of the problem and/or the solution so let’s start respecting our beautiful planet. Bali may have been referred to as a holiday from hell; let’s not makes our earth a planet from hell. PEACE.

half king surf collective

Conforming to the trend of “in” and “now” hang out places, here’s one that serves all you needs: shop, play, eat, drink, read and just feel comfortable, surrounded by an artistic site arrangement. Half King Surf Collective stands behind the front row of Oberoi’s happening shops, with a remarkable 177X steel sign on its roof. You’ll also notice the spectacle of colorful surfing boards calling you from its front window. This is no ordinary commercial space; it’s a hangout spot for and of the surfing community, bringing all their original design concepts together. You’ll find a variety of one-off clothes, ranging from cool t-shirts to novelty-themed items, vintage eyewear, accessories, jewelry, selected musical instruments, surf and skate equipment…all under the one roof of Soho industrial

warehouse styling with a strong sense of beach spirit. Explore the décor as much as their consumerables! From the old dentist chair (perfect for that photo shoot for your next silly Facebook profile pic), to the drum for that real time jamming session, to the wooden lounge where you can just sit and read the surfing magazines. And there’s more! Soon they’ll be opening a bar and restaurant, where you can dine and party like a rock star, tucked into their signature rustic environment.
