Recycling helps us to convert our old products into new useful products. In other words, it is good for the environment. Since we are saving resources and are sending less trash to the landfills, it helps in reducing air and water pollution. You will examine your neighborhood to see how well children are taken care of it, decide what you would expect to see in a city that takes care of its children. Based on your collective observational data, you will determine how well Cleveland takes care of its children. Your team will then identify one area in which the city can improve and make recommendations to how to provide better care/opportunities for the children in your neighborhood. Cleveland On The Rise – Grades 7-8June 7 – July 2 & July 12 – August 6 | Morning Session – Robert H. Jamison, Mound, George Washington Carver, O.H. Perry, Campus International K-8, Orchard, William C. Bryant, Waverly, Artemus Ward and Riverside Cleveland’s population has been declining for many years in spite of the revitalization effort over the past few years to bring the city back. Your job is to evaluate this effort and report to Departments of Economic Development and Community Development. After conducting observations in your neighborhood and comparing it to observations made by other students in different neighborhoods, your team will identify one revitalization effort to dig deeper and evaluate. You will then make a recommendation on how to revitalize Cleveland.

Improving Hough – Grades 7-8June 7 – July 2 & July 12 – August 6 | Morning Session – Willson Engage in your community’s improvement project by researching/brainstorming the revitalization process to determine which improvement strategy is preferred. Consider budget, time investment, resources & materials needed, etc.

Your Neighborhood and Your Health – Grades 7-8June 7 – July 2 & July 12 – August 6 | Morning Session – Franklin D. RooseveltExplore how your neighborhood influences the choices you make about your health. You will research, analyze and interpret data to formulate a persuasive argument to a local grocery chain. Then evaluate, collaborate and defend your proposals for solving your community food desert and present your final collaborative pitch to neighborhood stakeholders.

Cute and Clean in the CLE – Grades 7-8June 7 – July 2 & July 12 – August 6 | Morning Session – AlmiraMore than a decade ago a different school occupied the current location of Halle school. Over that time, neighbors of the school saw a decline in traffic and residents due to the school being demolished. As a result, drug activity and gang violence began taking place. With the construction of the new Halle school, we want to beautify the neighborhood and make it more desirable than ever.

Cleveland on the Rise: Revitalizing our City – Grades 7 & 8June 7 – July 2 & July 12 – August 6 | Morning Session – Robert H. Jamison, Mound, George Washington Carver, Harvey Rice, O.H. Perry, Campus International K-8, Orchard, William C. Bryant, Waverly, Artemus Ward and Riverside Cleveland has had a declining population for many years in spite of the revitalization effort over the past few years to bring the city back. In 2007, the mayor published a plan promising to make Cleveland vital, vibrant and connected by the year 2020. Your job is to evaluate this effort and report to the Departments of Economic Development and Community Development. After conducting observations in your neighborhood and comparing it to observations made by other students in different neighborhoods, your team will identify one revitalization effort to dig deeper and evaluate the situation, which should include ideas to make improvements if you believe the city has not met its goal.

When people need to know something, or change the way they do things, photos and other visual images are used to make a change—like a stop sign, or decorations, or a memorial. Use the power of images and art to create the change you want to see in your life or in the world.

Mural Project – Grades 1-3June 7 – July 2 & July 12 – August 6 | Morning Session – Wade ParkBe part of creating a large-scale mural painting that embodies the mindset of your community and school district, led by your art teacher and community volunteers.

Digital Photography – Grades 1-3June 7 – July 2 & July 12 – August 6 | Morning Session – ClarkLearn the basics of using a digital camera, simple composition, editing software and critiquing techniques, and use those skills to create original images for printing or posting. The images may be a singular piece on its own or part of a personal or class project.

Using the tools of visual art, you will create a work of art that inspires change you want to see in your community.

Explore the rich history of art as a way to make change, and then create your own work of art designed to provoke and promote positive change in the world.

Starry, Starry Night – Grades 4-8June 7 – July 2 & July 12 – August 6 | Morning Session – William C. Bryant Analyze and create a replica of Vincent Van Gogh’s painting, Starry, Starry Night. Write narratives using Vincent Van Gogh’s painting to create the beginning of the narrative, and then paint the middle and the end of their narratives using Van Gogh’s techniques. You will have a finished product of a complete narrative and a three-series art piece.

In recent years, the global elephant population has declined and is now critically endangered. New regulations prevent elephants from being held in captivity. There will be a HUGE space to fill at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. What will they do with all that space? What can we do to protect the global endangered species population? That’s where YOU come in!

Room to Grow – Grades 1-3 June 7 – July 2 & July 12 – August 6 | Morning Session – Albert B. HartScience/Economist in Action – Learn what happens when there are limited resources in a community by investigating what happens in smaller ecosystems such as our schoolyard garden and the effect they have on biotic factors.

STEM Fairy Tales – Grades 1-3June 7 – July 2 & July 12 – August 6 | Morning Session – HalleParticipate in a series of STEM challenges. After reading and discussing familiar fairy tales and folktales, you will problem solve using engineering design process and skills. Question, imagine, plan, create and communicate with others on a final project.

Jamison You will have the opportunity to work with horticultural experts in the planning and creation of a school/community garden using your voice to select the types of produce you wish to grow. You will have the opportunity to market, advertise and teach others the importance of agriculture.

Mars Landing – Grades 4-6June 7 – July 2 & July 12 – August 6 | Morning Session – Robert H. Jamison, Mound, Harvey Rice, O.H. Perry, William C. Bryant, Waverly and Artemus WardNASA lands the Perseverance rover on Mars! Unfortunately, the rover encountered some technical problems. After learning about the unique features of Mars and different spacecrafts, your mission, if you chose to accept it, is to design and build a spacecraft that can safely land on Mars to continue the exploration!

Citizen Science – Grades 4-6June 7 – July 2 & July 12 – August 6 | Morning Session – WillsonParticipate in several national and international Citizen Science projects where you will make observations and analyze data, then report your findings to the related website. The focus of our learning will be making scientifically appropriate observations, recording observations, comparing data to previously collected data and reporting data.

Hatching a Business Plan – Grades 4-6July 12 – August 6 | Morning Session – George Washington Carver, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Campus International K-8, Orchard, Buhrer Dual Language, Almira and RiversideYou are an Agriculturalist and entrepreneur (a farmer who sells their goods), and your challenge is to use science, technology, engineering and math skills to investigate the life cycle of an embryonic chicken egg using the real eggs that are incubating in your school classroom. Monitor the living eggs and observe the fluffy chicks that will hatch. In Part II, you will develop and share a business plan to market the eggs which your newly hatched chicks will produce.

Lego City – Grades 4-6June 7 – July 2 & July 12 – August 6 | Morning Session – WillsonYou will have opportunity to plan, design, organize and build your own city from scratch with the use of Legos.

Summer of Physics Fun! – Grades 7 & 8June 7 – July 2 & July 12 – August 6 | Morning Session – Riverside Study a variety of physics lessons including forces and motion, light and sound. All enrichment activities will include ‘make and takes’ to share with your family. Some activities include making a robot and studying the behavior of light through making jewelry and keychains.

Hover Craft Task Force Challenge – Grade 7 & 8June 7 – July 2 & July 12 – August 6 | Morning Session – Mound, George W. Carver, O.H. Perry, Campus International K-8, Orchard, Buhrer Dual Language, William C. Bryant, Almira, Waverly and Artemus Ward You are a highly sought after Mechanical Engineer who has been hired by the City of Cleveland’s Department of Transportation to design vehicles that allow for travel over land and/or water. Your assignment is to work alongside the city team, develop a design and give your recommendation. Your challenge is to develop your prototype and present to the committee for a final decision in enough time to mass-produce a vehicle to premier at the City’s Summer Waterfront Festival.

Critique various topics of news, such as politics, environment/climate concerns, athletes’ life decisions and other pop culture events. Present your original social media campaign via a self-selected social media platform for families/community members.

Spoken Word – Grades 7 & 8 June 7 – July 2 & July 12 – August 6 | Morning Session – All CMSD Grades 4-8 Summer Learning SitesSpoken Word has been used to communicate ideas and feelings throughout history. From passionate speeches delivered by coaches and generals designed to inspire their team or soldiers to bravely go into battle, to the artistic vivid imagery used by poets and songwriters, to the humorous speech given by the best man at a wedding. Spoken Word in one form or another has been used to inspire and entertain. Your task is to identify a message you want to deliver and the Spoken Word format you want to use for its delivery. There will be a Spoken Word contest at the end of the session where you will compete against the other participants.

High School Transition: The Keys to Success – Grade 8 Incoming FreshmenJune 7 – July 2 & July 12 – August 6 | Morning Session – All CMSD Grades 4-8 Summer Learning SitesThe jump from middle school to high school can be exciting, but also intimidating. It’s hard to anticipate everything involved with this transition, and we want to create something that can demystify this process and be helpful for future CMSD freshmen. That’s where you, the freshman comes into play. We want you to be our chief informant, making your voice heard about what is truly important to incoming students. At the end of this course, you will take what you have learned to create tips for incoming freshmen, making their transition to high school easier.
