COTTONWOOD FALLSOverture for Band

My roots run deep in the Great Plains, as I grew up in Oklahoma, and currently live on the southeastern edge of Kansas's Flint Hills. I am inspired daily by the beauty and vastness of this magnificent sea of grasses and the region's small towns, such as Coonwood Falls. This overture seeks to recreate, sonically, my experiences while vising the area.
To me, one of the most interesng aspects of the Flint Hills is that while they are sizable in scope, the hills also teem with life lived on a much smaller scale. Lile lizards scurry across your path. Buerflies and grasshoppers flit about. The plethora of spectacular grasses and wildflowers each host their own unique families of dependent criers. This dichotomy of magnitude is represented here in the fast secon by pairing a rhythmically acve melodic theme with a longer, more legato contrasng theme.
Another element of the plains environment of which I'm personally quite fond is represented in the middle secon; the beauty of nighme. Out here, the night sky is quite breathtaking in its inky infinity. When the moon is full, everything in sight becomes bathed in a serene silver-blue light. The more leisurely middle secon of “Coonwood” represents this “slowing down” of nighme on the prairie, featuring lush harmonies and simple, soaring melodies. Then, as always happens, the night draws to a close and another day dawns on the plains. I hope you enjoy this glimpse of my roots and taking a small journey through my “neighborhood.” Have fun performing Coonwood Falls Overture!
Nathan Jones (b. 1983) is a promising young composer originally from Oklahoma. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in Composion at the University of Kansas in 2016. His works are published by Southern Music Company, Walton Music, GIA Publicaons, and G. Schirmer. Jones is an alum of Westminster Choir College and his choral works have been described as "a feast of succulent modern harmonies" in the American Record Guide. His piece, “I Would Live in Your Love,” was premiered and recorded by the Westminster Choir, conducted by Joe Miller in 2009. He is regularly commissioned by collegiate and high school choirs and bands. Addionally, Jones is the winner of the 2015 ORTUS Internaonal New Music Compeon, 2016 Anthony Cuis Award, and his song cycle, "Six Qabbani Love Songs” was both an American Prize semifinalist and a 2016 NATS Art Song Compeon finalist.
