The Hands-On Curriculum for Student Success

Spring is finally here and we have some exciting news at Handwriting Without Tears®!

Our new K–4 editions will make handwriting easier to teach than ever before, and we are

thrilled to announce new electronic teacher’s guides for grades K–4! Now you can access interactive features to enrich your teaching, reduce your prep time, and make it even easier to teach handwriting— all on your computer or tablet. See p. 1 to learn more about this new technology resource.

Speaking of technology, our Wet-Dry-Try + Live Insights™ App for Capital Letters & Numbers is now available to purchase directly from us. With expanded analytics features, the app now allows you to instruct whole classrooms of students, and track individual student progress with detailed feedback to tailor your instruction. Interactive coaching still makes it perfect for one-on-one instruction, too! See p. 2 for more details.

We are delighted to have you bring our Pre-K and K–5 curricula to your classrooms!

Support/ELLHelp children make a sharp corner on L. Make the big line go straight down to a full stop, and then make the little line.

More To Learn Look for lizards in reptile books. Find other animals in the reptile family.

ActivityThis is the L page. L is a letter. Do you know: L words? L names? L sounds? Have you ever seen a lizard?

Look and LearnLet’s find Ls on this page. Look. There’s a lizard. Lizard starts with L. Is a lizard an animal or a person? Where do lizards live? What do lizards have?

Color and DrawLet’s color the lizard. Show pictures. Lizards can be any color. They can have spots or stripes. Draw rocks or grass for the lizard too. Demonstrate. The lizard needs a tongue!

Trace and Write LFinger trace the L at the top of the page. (Say directions.)Let’s write L. Put the crayon on the . Big line down. Little line across.

✔ CheckCheck for those who need help with crayon grip. Notice handedness and use of the helping hand.

Support/ELLChildren who are not ready for crayon tracing can finger trace over each cross.

More To Learn Show children pictures of scarecrows and crows. Scarecrow is a big word, a compound word. It is made with two little words: scare, crow. Put them to gether.

Three-year-olds can make a circle before they can make a cross. For four-year-olds, we use the cross to prepare them to write letters with vertical and horizontal strokes. Teach the vertical from top to bottom and the cross from left to right.

ActivityThis is a shape page. This shape is a cross.

Look and LearnLook at the pictures and name them together: cross, window, scarecrow, kite, cross. Then say together: This is a cross. The window has a cross; the scarecrow has a cross, etc. This strategy helps children learn words and left-to-right reading. The window has something else—a lizard.

Trace, Color, and Draw CrossesDemonstrate how to draw a cross: Little line down, little line across. Trace the first cross together. Children put their crayons on the arrow, little line down, little line across. Children trace, color, and draw as they like.

✔ CheckCheck for who need help with crayon grip. Notice handedness and use of helping hand.

Describe Problem and SolutionChildren understand that when they have a problem, they want to work it out. When they find a solution, they feel better. Many stories contain some type of problem for the characters to solve. Children learn that just as they feel better when their problems are solved, stories feel completewhen the character’s problem is solved.

© 2011 Get Set for School™ Puzzle Moves 91

Puzzle Moves

Materials/Setup:• 4 Squares More Squares – Big and Little Pieces in

all colors – 2" x 3" Pattern Boards

(1 per pair)

Grouping:Pairs

English Language Learners:Practice puzzle moves on the carpet before the activity. Demonstrate slide (sit and scoot forward), turn (sit and spin), and flip (lie flat on back and roll over). Have children join you.

ObjectiveChildren turn and flip shapes to build a puzzle.

ActivityLet’s build a puzzle. You’ll find the Big Piece that goes on your puzzle.

1. Place a 2" x 3" Pattern Board in front of each pair with the puzzle side up. Assign one partner to Little Pieces and one to Big Pieces.

2. Look at your board. The shapes are outlined. Put two Little Pieces on the puzzle.

3. Look at the space that is left. Which Big Piece will fit on your puzzle? Have the other partner choose a shape and try it on the board. If a pair of children is struggling to make a shape fit, suggest a turn or flip and demonstrate.

4. Have children tell you about their puzzle. How did you move your Big Piece to make it fit?How many Little Pieces did you use? Big Pieces?

5. Give each pair a new board. Have partners switch roles.

Check for Understanding

Observe children as they build the puzzle. Can they choose the piece that will fit? Can they do this even if the piece is in a different orientation than the space on the puzzle?

Support: Use only the red and yellow Big Pieces and their corresponding puzzles.

Match My ShapeScatter the big shapes on the carpet. They will naturally fall in different orientations. Give children a shape and ask them to stack the shapes that match.

Puzzle ChallengeChallenge children by using the plain side of the Pattern Board. One child picks a Big Piece, then the other completes the puzzle with Little Pieces. Give them paper copies of the board to color their solutions. See how many solutions they can find.

Move Shapes to MatchShapes can be hard to match when they are oriented differently. A simple turn or flip reveals the match. Turns rotate the piece into place. Flips turn the shape over to show its mirror image. Puzzles are a good way to explore orientation. Children move pieces to match the shape left on the puzzle.
