A warm welcome to our spring 2019 newsletter which includes useful information and advice as well as news on Society activities. I hope you enjoy reading or listening to this latest edition and, as always, we welcome your contributions for future issues. Thank you to Trish Overall for sending in the poem included later on! I’m delighted to announce that Emma Martin, in addition to her role as Administrator/Finance Officer, has taken on the new post of IT Advisor at the Society with effect from January for a 12 month period. Information technology is embedded into our everyday lives and much of it can be of great benefit to visually impaired people to improve safety in the home, maintain independence and enable communication. Emma’s role is to provide information, training and guidance on the range of equipment which is relevant, effective and suitable for our members. Emma talks about her role in more detail under the Tech Corner section of the newsletter. March saw the return of our fundraising coffee mornings. These will be held on the second Wednesday of each month through to November. We’re looking forward to holding our first St Neots fundraising coffee morning on 29

th May at The United Reform Church. We’re also excited

to announce details of our first fundraising fashion show which will be held at The George Hotel in Huntingdon on 25

th April. Details of all

fundraising activities are included in the newsletter and we thank you in advance for all your support at these events. I know many of you have been making the most of the Society’s social activities in the last few months which have included music from Charlie Chaplin, pub lunches, quiz afternoons, theatre trip, organised walks and craft afternoons. Members can look forward to plenty more events and activities in the coming months and plans are even in hand for this year’s Christmas party!! We look forward to catching up with you soon! SOCIAL ACTIVITIES REPORT by Rachel and Andrea

Christmas party report 2018 The 2018 Christmas party at Wood Green was another great success. We had a lovely afternoon with 160 members, carers, volunteers and staff enjoying each other’s company. The function room was decorated beautifully, the food was tasty and hot and the staff at Wood Green were helpful and cheerful. Ray Carter, singer and guitarist, entertained us with a variety of popular classics. Members were generous and supplied many raffle prizes to boost those we already had. The raffle raised a fantastic £330! We hope to be back at Wood Green for Christmas 2019. Andrea is already on the case, so watch this space!

Hunts Blind staff would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for all the Christmas cards and presents we received at the party and in the weeks leading up to Christmas. We are still making our way through chocolate biscuits and chocolates in the office and it’s March! In January all four clubs were thoroughly entertained by the delightful ‘Charlie Chaplin’. Music from all eras had members singing along and some of us even had a little dance. We will definitely see Charlie return some point in the future. February saw the return of the “Marmite” quiz. The members seem to love it or hate it! Each club’s winners got over 75% of the questions right, so it’s great to know our members are all “Masterminds!” In March all groups dined out for lunch. St Neots tried a new venue this year and had lovely afternoon at ‘The Highway Man’ in Eaton Socon. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful and we couldn’t fault the food. Ramsey club went to the Old Nene Golf Club in Ramsey. The view from the conservatory was stunning with the banks of daffodils in full glory. The meal was very reasonably priced and very tasty. The staff were very well organised and very polite and the club house was spotless. St Ives club is looking forward to a return trip to their favourite diner ‘Johnson’s Steak House’ at Oldhurst where we are always guaranteed an enjoyable afternoon. Huntingdon will be returning to their favourite “The Barley Mow” in Hartford where we are always made most welcome and the meals are certain to please.

All clubs will be visited by the NatWest community anti fraud team in April. Sadly fraud and scams are an everyday occurrence and the criminals who participate in these activities tend to prey on the more vulnerable members of society. This talk will help us to understand more about fraud and scams and how to avoid them. In May all groups will be off to ‘Carriages’ in Fen Drayton for afternoon tea aboard a stationary 1920’s train. From the moment you step into the 1920’s station you will be transported back to luxury and decadence. The Walking Group ventured on to new ground in February with a walk along the Thicket Path, St Ives towards Houghton. Once again the weather was on our side and we all enjoyed the beautiful sunshine. It was lovely to have new members join us this month and we hope to see you on the April walk. Summer outing Unfortunately we’ve found it increasingly difficult to find suitable destinations within a reasonable distance for our summer outing which will appeal to members. After considerable discussion we have decided to “rest” the summer outing this year and instead will run an extra monthly club which will see the return of the ever popular fish and chip lunch! This means we will get to see more of our members in July than we would if we had a trip out so (we think) a win win! If you have suggestions for outings please let Rachel and Andrea know. We like to keep the coach journey to no longer than one hour (to avoid the need for comfort breaks and excessive time spent on coaches) and attractions must be relevant and accessible for people with visual impairment.

Arts and Crafts group The arts and crafts group had great fun in December making snowmen out of white socks and rice. There were a few spillages of rice onto the floor instead of into the socks but the volunteers got the hang of it in the end! At the end of the session we had a terrific happy line of snowmen waiting to go home with their new owners to celebrate Christmas. In January, club members brought in their Christmas cards and recycled them into present labels and bags to store wrapping paper and bits and bobs in preparation for this Christmas.

For March’s group Andrea caught and sheered a sheep ready for the group to make Easter Bunnies using a cardboard template and wool! Everyone then had an Easter egg to place in the bunnies’ tummy. Andrea isn’t sure how long some of that chocolate remained by the time the members got home!

In May the group will be crafting with seashells, making shell trinket holders.

Sports and Social Group In January the Sports and Social group met at the Barley Mow in Hartford for a two course meal. The meal was delicious and the service was brilliant. In April the group will be going ten pin bowling – details to be confirmed.

Theatre Group update from Sharron Kelsey We had a gathering of thirty members and carers from our theatre group (including our first guide dog member) at the Cambridge Arts Theatre in March to see Noel Coward's play 'A Song at Twilight'. Jane Asher, Simon Callow and in particular Jessica Turner entertained us with fabulous performances packed with sharp wit and repartee in this fast paced drama. Our next visit will be to see the musical 'Fame' on Saturday 4th May at 2:30pm and this will be an audio described performance. If you would like more information about the theatre group please contact the office. ST NEOTS SOCIAL GROUP Methodist Church Hall, Berkley Street, Eynesbury, St Neots.

DONATIONS WANTED

STAMPS, MOBILE PHONES, WOOL, PRINTER CARTRIDGES AND BRIC-A-BRAC

Do you have any unwanted mobile phones or used printer cartridges? The Society is able to recycle these as part of a fundraising scheme –

please drop your unwanted cartridges or phones into the office.

The Society also welcomes donations of used stamps, spare wool and general bric-a-brac items.

AmazonSmile – fundraising while you shop! The Society is registered with AmazonSmile which means you can now support Hunts Society for the Blind each time you make a purchase on Amazon. AmazonSmile is the same as Amazon - same products, same prices and same service. It is a simple and automatic way for you to support your favourite charitable organisation every time you shop, at no cost to you. Amazon will donate 0.5% of the net purchase price (excluding VAT, returns and shipping fees). To shop at AmazonSmile go to smile.amazon.co.uk from the web browser on your computer or mobile device. On your first visit to smile.amazon.co.uk you need to select your charity, this will enable Hunts Blind and other charities to receive donations from every eligible purchase you make at smile.amazon.co.uk.

VISIT OUR RESOURCE ROOM Come and visit our resource room, open Monday – Friday 10am – 3pm where you will find a display of the stock we hold, information, catalogues and some examples of products that are available to order.

New products The family favourite game Connect 4 has been modified so the coloured counters are distinctly different. The red counters have an 8mm hole in the middle of them and the

yellow counters are solid, so you'll always know which counters are yours. Drop the coloured and tactile counters into the Connect 4 grid to form a straight line of four in a row – vertically, horizontally or diagonally. Whoever gets four in a row wins the game. Put your strategy skills to the test in this game for two players. Who will be first to get four in a row? Connect 4 is priced at £18.50.

TECH CORNER by Emma In the summer edition of our newsletter we introduced Alexa, the voice activated assistant built into the Amazon Echo speakers. We now have two Echo Dots at the Society, one for our resource room, which is available for members to practice with and learn more about what it can do and a second Dot in the main office for staff. Having Alexa takes some getting used to, making the switch from googling on our personal computers, looking for the information we require, to just asking Alexa for the information. Once you get used to talking to a device, rather than a human being, it becomes easy, although sometimes it does feel as if you’re talking to yourself! Occasionally there are times when Alexa doesn’t quite understand what you’re asking. Sometimes it can be the way we ask a question but we get there in the end. We still have lots of learning to do and with over 35,000 applications it’s going to take time! We would love to hear from members what you have found Alexa can do to help you. If any of you have any tips or advice for fellow members, please get in touch, it’s great to share the knowledge and learn together. As well as listening to music via the radio, Amazon music or Spotify, the daily weather updates and news briefings, there’s the fun and games you can play too. Calling friends and family through Alexa is another great function. Just ask to call a contact in your phone, as long as they too have the Alexa app, you will be able to speak to them through Alexa at no cost, the same with Alexa to Alexa messaging – send and receive messages between compatible devices. The support we have received from Amazon has been fantastic, Ryan, our account manager, visited Hunts Blind back in January and again at the end of March. If you feel you would benefit from training on any of the Amazon Echo devices or would just like to learn a bit more, even if you’re not thinking of purchasing one yourself, please call the office to

make an appointment to come along for a session. Please feel free to bring a friend or family member with you. I am currently arranging some training sessions with Apple for members with an iPhone, iPad, and iMac. “Today at Apple” sessions enable users to learn, create and do more with their Apple devices. If you would like to attend a session, please get in touch. The sessions will be organised for small groups of up to 4 people and will take place at the Apple store in Cambridge. Come along to learn more about the accessibility features on your Apple device. Huntingdon Library is another great support if you require help to use your tablet. Take your tablet along to the free weekly sessions which are held on Thursdays 10am - 12pm. Sessions can include; using Skype, photos, linking to other devices and accessing emails. Please contact the learning centre at Huntingdon library on 01480 372736 or email [email protected]. Please get in touch if you have any questions, would like some advice or have any training requirements regarding any of your devices. Some training can be provided at Hunts Blind, depending on your enquiry, some will be provided by the manufacturers of your device, the RNIB Tech Team or local support services such as Huntingdon Library. We will find the best way to support you and enable you to use your device to its full potential. We will not be able to help with the setting up of your device or provide training at home however home appointments are provided by the RNIB Tech Team. If you require this service, please call the office and you will be referred to the Technology for Life coordinators at the RNIB.

IT’S A BIG SURPRISE UNDER THE DUVET

Poem sent in by Trish Overall

She was preparing dinner as usual As her husband came running in,

He was home very early from work And was causing rather a din.

He appeared worked up and excited, His face reddened and flushed.

He was loudly calling out her name As into the kitchen he rushed.

He said ‘You must come with me now,’ As he took her by the hand.

He had the oddest look within his eye That she didn’t understand.

He then gently pulled her towards him And up the stairs he led,

Right into their bedroom he guided her And laid her on the bed.

She was shocked, surprised and excited, His intention seemed to be clear.

She hadn’t known him to be this intense For many, many a year.

He then pulled the duvet over them both, It seems he’d recaptured his spark,

But he said to her then ‘Just look at this – My new watch glows in the dark.’
