About HumaniTech®
Housed in UC Irvine’s School of Humanities, HumaniTech builds bridges among disciplines, skills, and constituencies across campus. We focus on collaboration where information technology is essential to bridge building efforts.
History of HumaniTech®
Launched in 1988 as “New Classroom Technologies” part-time program
Original focus: to get Humanities scholars on-board with technology
Renamed HumaniTech in 1999 to reflect new goals
Refocused and expanded to a full-time program in 1999
In 2005, HumaniTech became a registered trademark
HumaniTech® builds bridges through:
ColloquiaEducation and outreachLecture seriesFair use and copyrightCollaborations with a variety of schools
and departments on campus
Colloquia
HumaniTech presents colloquia on the application of new technologies to course instruction, where faculty share their work with their peers in Humanities and other fields.
Education & Outreach
HumaniTech offers workshops to faculty and students in which they learn to integrate new technologies in their teaching and research.
Instructors and advisors represent cross-disciplines of Humanities, Information and Computer Sciences, the UCI Libraries, and Network and Academic Computing Services, and from cross-professions of faculty, tech staff, and administrators.
Lecture Series
HumaniTech’s lecture series presents various topics on “Humanities and Technology,” with focus on issues such as: Multiple literaciesHuman rights and technologyNew mediaBeing human in a digital age
Fair Use and Copyright
HumaniTech offers workshops and individual consultation on fair use and copyright issues.
We take a basic, practical approach to encourage educators to take advantage of the wealth of material available to them in the electronic environment, and inform them of the potential risks.
Collaboration
HumaniTech collaborates with other Schools (Arts, Social Sciences, Information and Computer Sciences,…) and with other parts of the campus (Libraries, Network and Academic Computing Services,…) to host symposia and events that attract audiences from across UC Irvine and the local community.
HumaniTech team activities are working toward creative solutions that actively involve both faculty and staff in meaningful collaborations focused on technological progress for teaching and learning.
We see that not only do technology and the humanities mix, but, in the present digital culture, one may not be able to survive without the other.
