The Human Biology with Sociology and Psychology programme provides a breadth of education, offering a wide range of modules linking human biology with sociology and psychology

Although multidisciplinary in nature, the programme has a strong emphasis on human biology and the flexibility of the modules on offer allows student choice and a degree of in-depth specialisation. The psychology aspect develops an understanding of human behaviour and mental processes, and how these impact on the human body, while the sociology modules allow students to appreciate the inter-relationship between human biology and society.

Professional RecognitionOn graduation, First and Second class Honours graduates are eligible to apply for Graduate Membership of the Society of Biology. With appropriate work experience, all graduates may apply for full Chartered Biologist status.

Details of the Degree ProgrammeThe degree programme is modular in nature. Within each module the time is split between theoretical and practical classes designed to develop the skill and techniques necessary for employment. The development of strong communication skills is an integral element of this degree.

Years 1 and 2 of the programme provide a firm foundation in relevant aspects of human biology, psychology and sociology. In the later years students will focus their studies on disease states, current therapies, including gene therapy, and their implications for the individual and society.

There is a strong relationship between body and mind, brain and behaviour and these associations have profound effects on society.

Additionally, over the two semesters, students must also choose one sociology module, one psychology module and two biology modules.

Over the two semesters, students must choose two biology modules and a maximum of two sociology and/or psychology modules from:

Biology - Pharmacology: Special Topics, Pathophysiology and Therapeutics, Human Toxicology and the Environment, Emerging & Re-emerging Infections, Nutritional Priorities through the Lifecycle.

Psychology – Forensic Psychology, Counselling Psychology, Health Psychology, Abnormal Psychology.

Sociology – Ethnicity, Identity & Migration Issues in Medical Ethics, Body, Identity & Society, Sociology of Sport.

In addition, fourth year (honours) students undertake either:

Research Project or Dissertation (equivalent to 2 modules)

These are taken over 2 semesters.
