HTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM /WATCH?V=NZAMLDPTGA4 Science Fiction WHAT DO THESE 2 FILMS HAVE IN COMMON? Logans run Back to the future In 1976 film Logan's Run citizens could travel in driverless vehicles which are now becoming a reality. In 1989 Back to the future hover boards were used which are now a reality. This year's theme is aiming for a sustainable future SCIENCE FACT OR FICTION? Time travel as seen in Doctor Who is currently possible SCIENCE FICTION Well sort of. In the way it is portrayed in Science fiction, time travel remains an impossibility. Current theories of physics hold that particles are popping in and out existence and bouncing back and forth in time people can not. SCIENCE FACT OR FICTION? You can have a clone made out of your pet. SCIENCE FACT The first cloned pet was produced in 2004 (a cat called Nicky), and for the right price you can have one too. SCIENCE FACT OR FICTION? Scientists have built a device that harnesses brain waves to move objects based on a subjects will. SCIENCE FACT The power of the mind plus a device to read our brain waves makes it possible. Our primitive understanding of what the brains electrical signals actually mean can translate our sheer will into motion; the idea has been put to use recently in high tech toys and even an orchestra. SCIENCE FACT OR FICTION? Science can mimic the stage trick of levitation, and demonstrations have even shown a frog levitated in mid-air. SCIENCE FACT Other animals have levitated too. It has not yet been done on humans A magnetic field of some strength is necessary. The physics scientist Andre Geim did the trick with a live frog. SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY IS FANTASTIC BUT IT IS CAUSING A HUGE IMPACT ON OUR WORLDS RESOURCES Science technology is fantastic BUT it is causing a huge impact on our worlds resources We have a growing population and by 2030 we will have 3 extra billion people on top of the 2 billion people we have using technology in our developed world. This means We are heading for a 6 0 C rise in the Earths temperature in the future caused by an increase in carbon dioxide that is causing global warming. At present our extreme weather is caused by an increase in 1 0 C WE NEED TO BE SUSTAINABLE WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? HOW CAN YOU HELP? In the morning, when I get up, I reach for the remote and put the TV on its been on standby all night. (Did you know that over a year, a family leaving 2 TVs on standby use as much energy as driving 25 miles in a car?) I get my PE kit out of the tumble drier (Why not use a washing line instead? Its a great way to use solar and wind power no carbon dioxide produced to cause the earth to heat up.) I quickly clean my teeth with the tap running (Did you know that apart from wasting precious water you are also wasting the electricity used to pump and clean the water?) I get in the car to come to school. (If you can walk, cycle or catch a bus to school this saves on cars producing more carbon dioxide.) The radiators in the classroom are so hot that we have to open the windows to let some cool air in. (Turning the heating down just a little bit at school and at home will cut down on the oil, gas or electricity being used to heat the building.) At dinner time I dump my empty plastic water bottle in the playground bin. (Reusing things instead of throwing them away saves on energy too.) At school I get a load of extra paper from the classroom cupboard in case I need it for homework. (Every day businesses in America use so much paper that it would circle the globe 20 times!) On the way home we drive to the supermarket to get something for tea. I like strawberries all year round, even if theyve been flown half way round the world (A typical Sunday dinner may have travelled 49,000 miles if we buy food that has come from abroad.) All the food in the fancy packaging look so delicious. I pick up a plastic carrier bag and a free newspaper as I leave. I put the computer on and leave it running so I can check my messages during the evening. RULES OF SUSTAINABILITY TREASURE OUR EARTH WE NEED IT FOR OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS.
