I have now returned from Stockholm where I attended theArchitecture Commission as the official representative ofCanada and official voting delegate for CITTICTS this past June13 to 17

Just as Raija Hirvikoski a Finnish scenographer and keynotespeaker at the laquoScenotecture amp Archigraphyraquo Symposium heldon June 15 who addressed us using an imaginary letterwritten to the renowned international architect Avar Aalto laquoIfas a Scenographer one will meet a Theatre Architectraquo I toowish to write you of my tales and experience at Stockholm

Je trsquoassure Monique que la visite de ces deux projets mrsquoa vraimentmis dans lrsquoesprit de ce qui allait suivre agrave Stockholm Sache drsquoabordque cette anneacutee pour la toute premiegravere fois semble-t-il lesrencontres des comiteacutes Architecture et Sceacutenographie avaient lieuen mecircme temps et au mecircme endroit ce qui a vraiment eacuteteacute tregravesbeacuteneacutefique pour les membres des deux groupes et qui a permisdrsquoouvrir le deacutebat beaucoup plus largement entre architectes etsceacutenographes Cela explique donc lrsquointroduction de Raija Hirvikoskidont je te parlais au tout deacutebut

Mais avant de parler du congregraves lui-mecircme quelques commentairessur Stockholm et sur notre heacutebergement Stockholm est une villeextraordinaire dont on dit qursquoelle est la Venise du Nord Elle estcomposeacutee drsquoun chapelet drsquoinnombrables icirclots relieacutes par des pontsou des quais Lrsquoarchitecture de plusieurs eacutepoques est eacutetonnante derichesse de styles et de diversiteacute de mateacuteriaux et de volumeacutetriesTout semble avoir eacuteteacute soigneusement restaureacute et reacutenoveacute Les ruessont planteacutees drsquoarbres et font place agrave la fois aux pieacutetons et auxcyclistes auxquels les automobilistes doivent donner prioriteacute Nouseacutetions logeacutes sur le AF Chapman un bateau trois-mats entiegraverementreacutenoveacute et transformeacute en auberge de jeunesse ne renfermant quedes chambres doubles avec lits agrave deux eacutetages et toilettescommunes dans le corridor Une solution drsquoheacutebergement forteacuteconomique pour lrsquoorganisation de la confeacuterence qui en assumaitle coucirct mais qui ne plaisait pas agrave tous speacutecialement agrave moi qui ai lesommeil leacuteger drsquoun oiseau et qui ronfle Jrsquoai donc opteacute pourune chambre drsquohocirctel standard plus conforme agrave mes exigencesminimales mais dont le coucirct fut neacuteanmoins astronomiqueStockholm eacutetant lrsquoune des villes les plus chegraveres au monde

I assure Monique that visiting those two projects really set the tonefor what was to follow in Stockholm As you were aware it was Ibelieve the first time that both the Architecture and ScenographyCommission meetings were held jointly which was beneficial tothe members of both groups and allowed for a larger open debatebetween architects and scenographers And which explains theintroduction of Raija Hirvikoski as mentioned above

But before talking about the meetings I would like to share somepersonal thoughts on Stockholm and the accommodationsStockholm is an extraordinary city said to be Venice of the North

The city is composed of a rosary of endless islets connected bybridges or docks The architecture of many periods is stunninglyrich in styles and diversity of material and volumes Everythingseems to have been carefully restored and renovated The streetsare planted with trees and offer sufficient space to bothpedestrians and cyclists for whom drivers have to give right of wayWe were set up on the AF Chapman a three-mast ship completelyremodelled and transformed into a hostel offering double roomswith bunk beds and a shared bathroom in the hallway A veryeconomic solution for the hosting organisation that did nothowever please everyone especially me who sleeps like a bird andsnores I opted for a standard room in a nearby hotel that met myminimal expectations despite its astronomical rate Stockholm isafter all among the most expensive cities in the world

Anchored at the Skeppsholmen dock the ship is located near theMuseum of Architecture (wwwarkitekturmuseetse) where ourwork meetings and conferences were held Itrsquos a wonderful placewith a terrace overlooking the port adjacent to the Museum ofModern Art created by the renowned Spanish architect RafaelMoneo (wwwmodernamuseetse)

TAC 2007Nous avons ensuite discuteacute de TAC 2007 (The ArchitectureCompetition) des aspects du programme eacutelaboreacute par Tim Fosterqui ont assez bien fonctionneacute et de ceux que les participants ontmoins bien reacutesolu Il srsquoagissait drsquoune salle de 500 places eacutetablie enbordure drsquoun plan drsquoeau (lac riviegravere fleuve) Le jury srsquoest tenu enAllemagne pendant quatre jours Le budget total de ce concourseacutetait de 50 000 euros dont 30 000 provenaient de lrsquoOISTAT et 20000 de diffeacuterents commanditaires

TAC 2011Le sujet de la prochaine compeacutetition nrsquoest pas encore arrecircteacuteCependant il semble que tous soient drsquoaccord pour que lesaspects techniques mal reacutesolus en 2007 soient de nouveau au

June 14The Architecture Commission meeting began on the morning ofJune 14 It was organised by Swedish architect Torsten Noblingwho deserves our deepest appreciation for the quality of thepresentations the visits and the workshop

The membersA total of 16 members of the Architecture Commission fromnumerous countries participated at the meetings Torsten Nobling(Sweden) Martien van Goor Kiem-Liam Theacute and CarolineNoteboom (Holland) Reinhold Daberto (Germany) Mac Chan(Malaysia) Pjotr Obracaj (Poland) Anne Minors (United Kingdom)Toshiya Kusuka (Japan) Johu Gronholm (Finland) Mihaly Vargha(Poland) Lenka Bednarova (Czech Republic) Pu Lin (Taiwan) andRobert Hamilton Wes Jenkins and myself (Canada)

Administrative businessThe first working session dealt mostly with administrative businessThe outgoing chair of the Architecture Commission ReinholdDaberto reported on the financial situation whereas beingmodest will still allow for activities during the upcoming year MrDaberto was re-elected by acclamation for a 4-year term no othercandidatures were submitted The Finnish representative didpropose Tim Foster a theatre architect from the United Kingdombut unfortunately he is unable to ensure a proper involvementwithin the commission for health reasons He then proposed twovice chairs Torsten Nobling and Martien van Goor both Europeanarchitects to facilitate future discussions and meetings Themembers approved this proposition unanimously Mr Daberto thenpresented the four major elements of his next mandate

bull Increase and intensify relations with other commissionsespecially the Scenography Commission

bull Increase architectural and technical exchanges betweenmembers of the Architecture Commission without stimulatingcompetition

bull Improve exchange of information on a new website throughthe integration of a standardized data sheet provided tocommission members for each theatre project

bull Find the topic of the next theatre architecture competition inpreparation for the Prague Quadrennial in 2011

TAC 2007We then discussed TAC 2007 (The Architecture Competition) andthe aspects of the programme developed by Tim Foster thatworked reasonably well and those that were more or less resolvedby the participants The topic was a 500-seat theatre built at theedge of a water body (lake or river) The jury met in Germany forfour days The total budget of this competition was 50 000 Eurosincluding 30 000 from OISTAT and the remaining 20 000 fromdifferent sponsors

TAC 2011The topic of the next competition is not yet finalized However weall agreed that the unresolved technical aspects of the 2007 editionbe brought back on the table for the 2011 edition I suggestedthat the project focus on the urban theatre and have the urbanarchitectural and contextual relationship between city and theatreput forward on the basis that many recent projects done bystarchitects such as the Casa da Musica in Porto obliterate thiscrucial aspect in favour of purely symbolic buildings the new urbanicons

Lenka Bednarova qui repreacutesente aussi la Quadriennale questionnele type de preacutesentation le papier versus le multimeacutedia afindrsquoenvisager une diffusion plus importante apregraves la QuadriennalePour certains membres du comiteacute lrsquoexposition des projets endessin avec le catalogue semble toujours dlsquoactualiteacute alors que pourdrsquoautres lrsquoInternet est le meilleur veacutehicule Il semble bienMonique que la prochaine exposition sera une version hybride Ence qui concerne le calendrier tous les membres sont drsquoaccord pourlancer le programme au printemps de 2010 afin que les eacutetudiantspuissent deacutevelopper leurs projets agrave lrsquoautomne 2010 et que le toutsoit preacutesenteacute au jury en feacutevrier 2011 Un calendrier similaire agrave celuide TAC 2007

Lrsquoexposition drsquoarchitectureNous avons ensuite discuteacute de lrsquoexposition des projetsdrsquoarchitecture nationaux Jrsquoignorais totalement que des prix eacutetaientremis aux meilleurs projets Je tenterai donc de faire valoir cetaspect lors de la prochaine participation du Canada Tous lesmembres semblaient drsquoaccord sur le fait que lrsquoexposition esthabituellement mal positionneacutee dans le hall drsquoexposition souvent agravela mezzanine et qursquoelle est malheureusement moins assiducircmentfreacutequenteacutee Le comiteacute a mandateacute Lenka Bednarova pour faire partde cette preacuteoccupation aux membres de lrsquoorganisation de PQ2011 Nous croyons que lrsquoexposition des manufacturiers celle desprojets drsquoarchitecture nationaux et celle du concours drsquoarchitectureeacutetudiant devraient ecirctre installeacutees sur un mecircme plancher dans unmecircme vaste endroit permettant une visite mieux inteacutegreacutee et plusstimulante

Lrsquointermegravede entre deux PQIl semble que bien peu drsquoactiviteacutes prennent place entre deuxquadriennales conseacutecutives Ainsi Reinhold Daberto a proposeacuteqursquoun laquoSummer Academyraquo se tienne tous les quatre ans entre lesquadriennales afin de stimuler les eacutechanges et de preacuteparer laquadriennale suivante Cette activiteacute aurait lieu agrave Salzbourg enAutriche en collaboration avec le Mozarteum (University of Musicand Dramatic Arts wwwmozarteumat) pendant le Festival deSalzbourg

LrsquoOISTAT a deacutegageacute une somme de 1000 euros pour deacutevelopper ceprojet La prochaine rencontre du comiteacute Architecture aura donclieu agrave Salzbourg en juin 2009 Je trsquoannonce deacutejagrave Monique que jeplanifie drsquoy participer agrave titre de repreacutesentant officiel et votant duCITT

Autres concoursReinhold Daberto mentionne que lrsquoOISTAT est solliciteacutee pourparticiper agrave lrsquoorganisation de concours drsquoarchitecture de theacuteacirctrenotamment le projet laquoSurgut Theatreraquo en Russie agrave titre deconsultant Dossier agrave suivre

The architecture exhibitionWe then discussed the exhibition of architectural national projectsI had no idea that awards were given for the best projects so I willtry to make a case using this aspect for the next Canadianparticipation All the members seemed to agree that the exhibit isusually poorly situated in the exhibition hall often on themezzanine and it is unfortunately less attentively attended Thecommittee has appointed Lenka Bednarova to share this concernto members of the PQ 2011 We believe that the exhibit ofmanufacturers the architectural projects and the nationalcompetition for student architecture should be installed on thesame floor in the same location for a better-integrated and morecomprehensive visit

The architecture exhibitionWe then discussed the exhibition of architectural national projectsI had no idea that awards were given for the best projects so I willtry to make a case using this aspect for the next Canadianparticipation All the members seemed to agree that the exhibit isusually poorly situated in the exhibition hall often on themezzanine and it is unfortunately less attentively attended Thecommittee has appointed Lenka Bednarova to share this concernto members of the PQ 2011 We believe that the exhibit ofmanufacturers the architectural projects and the nationalcompetition for student architecture should be installed on thesame floor in the same location for a better-integrated and morecomprehensive visit

Les prochaines rencontres du comiteacute ArchitectureIl a eacuteteacute souligneacute par Torsten Nobling que les coucircts de subsistance etdrsquoheacutebergement dont le comiteacute Architecture deacutefraie pour sesparticipants sont devenus tregraves eacuteleveacutes Il semble que cette pratiqueserait abandonneacutee pour la prochaine rencontre de Salzbourg sansque cela me semble-t-il nrsquoait fait lrsquoobjet drsquoaucun vote speacutecifique

Par ailleurs agrave titre purement speacuteculatif Robert Hamilton soutenupar Wes Jenkins a indiqueacute lrsquointeacuterecirct conjoint de Vancouver et deCalgary de tenir la rencontre de 2012 Cette date semble plausibleparce que plusieurs projets sceacutenographiques auront eacuteteacute compleacuteteacutesdans les deux villes et qursquoil semble aussi que ce soit lagrave la premiegraveredate disponible En effet Salzbourg recevrait la rencontre de 2009potentiellement Rio en 2010 et Prague en 2011 lors de laQuadriennale

Other competitionsReinhold Daberto mentions that OISTAT was asked to participateas a consultant in the organization of the theatre architecturalcompetition in Russia and notably the Surgut Theatrerdquo projectDetails to follow

The next meetings of the Architecture CommissionIt was pointed out by Torsten Nobling that the cost of subsistenceand accommodation that the Architecture Commission pays forthe participants at this meeting is very high It seems that thispractice will be abandoned for the next meeting in Salzburgalthough it seems that there was no specific vote on that topic

Furthermore as a purely speculative proposal Robert Hamiltonsupported by Wes Jenkins mentioned a joint interest of bothVancouver and Calgary cities to hold the meeting in 2012 Thisdate seems plausible because several scenographic projects willhave been completed in those two cities and it seems that the year2012 would be the first available date In fact Salzburg will behosting the meeting in 2009 probably Rio in 2010 and Prague in2011 during the Quadrennial

However in private Robert told me he was not sure that thoseprojects would be completed I replied that Queacutebec City couldprobably host the meetings of both Architecture and Scenographycommissions to which we could add the Technology CommissionIndeed in 2012 the proposed new venues designed by RobertLepage in a disused tunnel in the downtown district will have beencompleted for some time and the combination of the Carrefourinternational de theacuteacirctre de Queacutebec - from mid-May to end-May -the tour of the Lepage project and others venues such as the PalaisMontcalm would be an additional benefit and could constitute anamalgam of interesting activities

Robert Hamilton also emphasized the importance for commissionmembers to be officially invited by the OISTAT and its commissionsto better justify the travelling and the value of the meetings withtheir employers and agencies that fund them

June 15The day began with a joint meeting of members of bothcommissions and the introduction of Raija Hirvikoski the Finnishdesigner of whom I have already spoken at the beginning of thislong letter

Evidently she explained very skilfully the architectural problems of

theatres designed by Alvar Aalto the internationally renownedarchitect I must admit she was right If Aalto had consultedtheatre consultants a discipline invented by Richard PilbrowTheater Project Consultants in London and existing at that time Ibelieve that many mistakes both in the auditorium and in theadjacent areas could have been avoided

The workshopThis pungent introduction set the tone for the workshop thatfollowed for much of the day We randomly grouped into eightteams I ended up with Elizabeth Asselstine (Canada) that I did notknow yet Peter Ruthven Hall (United Kingdom) Johu (Finland) PuLin (Taiwan) and Jerome Maeckelberghe (Belgium) We discussedmore than designed a new form of theatre a Happy TheatreOur team proceeded by establishing lists of spaces we liked themost and those we liked the least to finally draft a list of those thatamazed us the most and tried to identify patterns or similaritiesOther teams worked differently trying to draw the most optimal

The presentation of Robert Hamiltonrsquos team was particularlysuccessful and fun The result the fruit project which claimed toencompass all other types of theatres is a pineapple (ThePineapple Project) as named by Robert and which I havemockingly renamed the olive project (The Pitt-off Olive Project)

Most surprising was that at the end of the day whatever thesolutions the constant is that the black box-type space with theideal proportions of 20 m x 30 m seems to delight both architectsand scenographers provided that the support spaces aresufficiently generous and versatile A summary of these differentsolutions will be sent to participants by Torsten Nobling Theworkshop session was interrupted after lunch to allow thepresentation of various papers

Jrsquoai personnellement demandeacute que les membres de notre comiteacutepuissent obtenir de bonnes photographies des dessins exeacutecuteacutes parles membres des diffeacuterentes eacutequipes et que nous obtenions uneforme de compte rendu Jrsquoai aussi suggeacutereacute que cette informationsoit disponible et serve de point de deacutepart agrave lrsquoatelier de lrsquoanprochain qui sera tenu agrave Salzbourg Ces demandes ont eacuteteacuteaccueillies tregraves favorablement comme faisant partie drsquoun processuscontinu de recherche

A much larger Multi Lingual ProjectThe last presentation was from Belgian Jerome Maeckelberghe Hispresentation surprised many me the first Mr Maeckelberghedeveloped a multilingual website for OISTAT members whichallows everyone to find their way in their own languageRegardless of the keyword all available information appearsinstantly in the language of the user The site would be funded bytheatre equipment manufacturers theatre consultants andarchitecture firms and would enable any designer to know theavailability of products in its immediate surroundings The site isnot yet operational but would soon be It is remarkable by itssimplicity and will be a great vehicle for promotion disseminationand exciting exchanges

There is an OISTAT meeting scheduled in Belgrade Romania on 16and 17 September to develop this website To that effect I inviteyou to read Jeromersquos invitation at the end of the letter

Other specific presentationsAfterward members of both commissions regrouped within theirrespective groups for some more specific presentations Beforelaunching these presentations Reinhold Daberto our electedpresident backtracked to the previous dayrsquos workshop which sortof tapered off without summing up the exercise because we hadto make our way rapidly to the architecture museum

I personally requested that the members of our committee receivegood photographs of the drawings made by members of thedifferent teams and that we get a written summary I alsosuggested that this information be made available and serve as astarting point for next yearrsquos workshop which will be held inSalzburg These applications have been received very favourably aspart of a continuous research process

Visit of the Drama InstituteThe visit of this new institute was particularly interesting as muchby the planning of the different functions along an interior streetas the specific technical organization of the various studios for filmtelevision theatre and others In some respects this finishedproject reminded me of a similar proposition that I developedduring the architectural contest of the Production Centre for thePerforming Arts in Sherbrooke which unfortunately was notretained by the jury So anyway as you can see Monique youcan always find comfort in knowing that ones own good ideas canbe found elsewhere in the world including a much-appreciatedrecent project

I had to abruptly leave the tour of the Institute for I only had a fewfree hours to track down three projects of the famous Swedisharchitect Erik Gunnar Asplund built in the 1920s the public librarythe Skandia Theatre and the Woodland Cemetery Believe it or notMonique I managed a ldquotour de forcerdquo of tracking and visiting allthree before returning to meet the members of the Canadiandelegation at the restaurant for our last meal together

The last supperAt the suggestion of Suzanne a Swedish friend of Robert we ndashWes Elizabeth Robert and myself accompanied by Nissar Allanaan Indian architect and Suzanne ndash invaded the vaults of arestaurant in the old city Magnus Ladulas where we relishedourselves all night long I had to abandon them to indescribablethings I can barely recall while I dashed back to my hotel to finishpacking my bags and prepare for an early flight the next morningat 700 am precisely for the long journey back home Stockholm -Paris - Montreacuteal - Queacutebec

I had to be back in Queacutebec by June 19 because I was to beinducted into the Wall of Celebrities at my high school and it wasrequested of me to deliver the end of the year speech to 160graduateshellip

Je me devais drsquoecirctre de retour agrave Queacutebec pour le 19 juin parce quejrsquoeacutetais introniseacute au tableau des ceacuteleacutebriteacutes de mon eacutecole secondaireet que crsquoest agrave moi qursquoincombait le discours de fin drsquoanneacutee et laremise de 160 diplocircmeshellip

Pendant ce temps plusieurs de mes nouveaux amis parcouraient lacampagne sueacutedoise agrave la recherche de theacuteacirctres et de spectaclesinusiteacutes notamment agrave Dalhalla (wwwdalarnase) un theacuteacirctreouvert dans une carriegravere de pierre agrave 300 km de Stockholm

Voilagrave ma belle Monique tu sais tout Jrsquoai vraiment appreacutecieacutelrsquoexpeacuterience je souhaite la renouveler lrsquoan prochain agrave Salzbourg etje suis particuliegraverement content des contacts professionnels etpersonnels qui jrsquoy ai faits Ma plus grande deacutecouverte je crois futde reacutealiser agrave quel point les Sueacutedois et particuliegraverement lesHollandais ont une tradition drsquoarchitecture de theacuteacirctre qui rivaliseavantageusement avec celle des Franccedilais et des Britanniques LaHollande sera sans aucun doute la toute prochaine destination devisites theacuteacirctrales

Meanwhile back in Sweden several of my newly acquired friendsroamed the countryside in search of Swedish theatres and unusualshows including Dalhalla (wwwdalarnase) an open air theatre ina stone quarry 300 km from Stockholm

So there you go my dear Monique you now know everything Ireally enjoyed the experience and I hope to renew it next year inSalzburg I am particularly pleased with the new professional andpersonal contacts I have made My greatest discovery I believewas realising how the Swedes and in particular the Dutch have atradition of theatre architecture that competes favourably with theFrench and British Holland will undoubtedly be the nextdestination for theatre visits

The Massey Theatre in New WestminsterBC was the venue for Student Night lsquo09held on Friday January 16th This was agreat location for the event combining thetradition and lsquoold schoolrsquo technology of thehemp system and the recently installedstate-of-the-art Meyer rig

As always general mingling started theevening as students chatted with suppliersand organizations Also there were plentyof opportunities for the Corporates to catchup with each other This has become animportant side-feature of the event

Ben Smith of Christie Lites Vancouver did alighting board presentation Shawn Hinesof GerrAudio Distribution did a sounddesign mini-workshop Tours of the facilitywere led by Don Parman Massey TechnicalDirector (and CITT BC Section President)and Erin Nelligan Assistant TechnicalDirector Don also did a workshop on videoprojection

Challenge Master Roger Lantz gave thechallenge a twist this year The studentswere divided into two large teams Onewas required to build a model fromsupplied and found objects of the OlympicVillage The other had to model a proposalfor the twinning of the Port Mann BridgeWhen complete they had to go beforelsquoCity Councilrsquo and argue the validity andimportance of their project Eventually thebridge proposal was declared the winner

The athletes will have to sleep under thebridge and take public transit to the games

Unfortunately although numbers werestrong for both students and Corporatesthe number of schools had dropped WhileVancouver Island University (formerlyMalaspina College) Capilano University(formerly Capilano College) and DouglasCollege (still a college) each sent largecontingents other schools were noticeableby their absence It is of course impossibleto pick a night that fits everybodyrsquosschedule but Don Parman has issued achallenge to the other programs to attendHe even has mentioned the possibility ofprizes Or perhaps just public shaming fornot showing Student Night rsquo10 is January15th ndash mark your production schedulesnow

The Massey Theatre in New WestminsterBC was the venue for Student Night lsquo09held on Friday January 16th This was agreat location for the event combining thetradition and lsquoold schoolrsquo technology of thehemp system and the recently installedstate-of-the-art Meyer rig

As always general mingling started theevening as students chatted with suppliersand organizations Also there were plentyof opportunities for the Corporates to catchup with each other This has become animportant side-feature of the event

Ben Smith of Christie Lites Vancouver did alighting board presentation Shawn Hinesof GerrAudio Distribution did a sounddesign mini-workshop Tours of the facilitywere led by Don Parman Massey TechnicalDirector (and CITT BC Section President)and Erin Nelligan Assistant TechnicalDirector Don also did a workshop on videoprojection

Challenge Master Roger Lantz gave thechallenge a twist this year The studentswere divided into two large teams Onewas required to build a model fromsupplied and found objects of the OlympicVillage The other had to model a proposalfor the twinning of the Port Mann BridgeWhen complete they had to go beforelsquoCity Councilrsquo and argue the validity andimportance of their project Eventually thebridge proposal was declared the winner

The athletes will have to sleep under thebridge and take public transit to the games

Unfortunately although numbers werestrong for both students and Corporatesthe number of schools had dropped WhileVancouver Island University (formerlyMalaspina College) Capilano University(formerly Capilano College) and DouglasCollege (still a college) each sent largecontingents other schools were noticeableby their absence It is of course impossibleto pick a night that fits everybodyrsquosschedule but Don Parman has issued achallenge to the other programs to attendHe even has mentioned the possibility ofprizes Or perhaps just public shaming fornot showing Student Night rsquo10 is January15th ndash mark your production schedulesnow

Also thanks to Linda McCormick fororganizing our Student Night held FridayJanuary 16 2009 at Ryerson Main Stage Weenjoyed our highest turn out of studentsever well over a hundred

Both events were well planned and therewas lots of positive feedback from themembers and students who attended
