2017: Top Tips
“We started early and used all our comms channels to involve as many volunteers as possible from a wide range of areas.” CHARLOTTE SHAW, Corporate Responsibility Manager, Euroclear
Helping the homeless - Telereal TrilliumTelereal Trillium ran a silent online auction in aid of our charity partner St Mungo’s, helping to raise funds for their City Lodge Capital Appeal. When built, the City Lodge (a five minute walk from our head office), will provide accommodation for long term rough sleepers in the City, aged over 40, who have been living on the streets the longest. The silent auction raised a fantastic £3,224, all of it from bids placed by Telereal Trillium’s staff and items donated by the company, suppliers and our generous employees - including the Board. Telereal Trillium matched the money raised bringing the grand total to well over £6,000. Eleven volunteers from all areas of the business championed the auction encouraging donations and bidding, and trophies were awarded to encourage donations.

joining forces to celebrate with you3 Internal communication is key -put

PROMOTE IT 1 Send a message from the top of your
organisation about why the company is supporting CITY GIVING DAY and what it means to give back
2 Ask your charity partner(s) to promote your work and CITY GIVING DAY through social media, their own newsletters, etc
3 Start early - use all available communications channels to engage as many volunteers as possible
DO IT! 1 Take lots of photos2 Use social media to promote what
you’re doing3 Don’t forget to Gift Aid any donations
- your chosen charity will receive 25p extra for every £1 given.

Message from the Lord Mayor First of all I would like to wish a warm welcome to those of you who have recently joined our
City Giving Day roll of honour. Thank you to all of you who have submitted your stories so far. I
have read these with great interest including CBRE’s efforts in providing solutions to the housing crisis with Shelter, and Investec who on City Giving Day will be running a “Beyond Business Dragon’s Den” to support businesses making a positive and sustainable impact. Last year many of you used the hashtag ‘#CGD’ to share your own stories online. To make it
even easier this year you can download our City Giving Day tweet schedule containing all the dates and hashtags you need to get started.
A chance to join me on City Giving Day On the morning of City Giving Day, before our group photo event, I will be at the London Stock
Exchange ready to open the markets on their famous balcony. It will be a wonderful way to start
a day of celebrations and I would like to use the occasion to invite those who you have supported my Appeal this year to join me. As the balcony holds just sixty people it seems only
fair to draw these names from a ballot and this will take place on 30th June. Read more here
All companies that register for CITY GIVING DAY will receive a participants’ materials pack which includes:
• 25 x branded balloons• 1 x proud to support certificate
Companies willing to cover costs can also order pop up banners and t-shirts.

GUILDHALL MASTERS FLIP OUT
While we’re on the subject of sport, it’sPancake Day tomorrow, and the City ofLondon is gearing up for its annualpancake race, where London’s grandestgrandees get to swap stocks and sharesfor skillets and eggs as they are pittedagainst each other in a gruelling laparound Guildhall’s courtyard. The inter-livery tournament sees 21 teams from theCity’s worshipful companies competingfor frying pan trophies. Pancakes arelovingly crafted by the Poulter’sCompany, who also supply the eggs. We’re hoping to see enthusiastic flippingfrom former Citi vice chair MichaelLlewelyn-Jones, newly appointed as themaster of the Worshipful Company ofInternational Bankers last year.
QUOTE OF THE DAY...
NOTHING says “romance” like a bottleof European sparkling wine at a baroverlooking your office. There areValentine’s packages for both mil-lennnials and traditionalists on offerin the swanky hotels of London’s fi-nancial quarters, so there’s no need toleave your desk at all this weekend.
In Liverpool Street, the Andaz hotelhas given “Netflix and Chill” a five-star makeover with its “Bed, Flicks
No need to leave the Square Mileand Chill” package. Couples can stayin one of the luxury suites with un-limited access to the hotel’s DVD li-brary, a prosecco and popcorn.
If like many, your commute takesyou through Liverpool Street Stationthen this relaxed offering is perfectfor getting into work on time.
Meanwhile, the Grange hotels at StPauls and Tower Hill are providingtwo distinct V-day deals. While the
package at St Pauls includes board, dinner and a spa treatment, those atthe other end of the City are swappingmassages for macarons with an after-noon tea included in the price.
And for those who can’t see whytheir date wouldn’t want to spend theweekend in Canary Wharf, the localHilton’s Columbia Restaurant is offer-ing a three course bitter and/or sweetmenu for £45. Board not included.

CITY SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS VERBIERHundreds from London’s financial and business communities battled it out for
glory in two days of racing this weekend, starting with a “radar trap” to find thefastest male and female skier, and ending with a daunting “Giant Slalom” race onday two . Allen & Overy’s Selina Sinclair was the fastest female, while TriglavReinsurance president Gregor Strazar tied with ESSV’s Rupert Wilcox for fastestmale. A special award on the Giant Slalom went to Liam Crowley, who had only putskis on for the first time that week. He was heavily cheered on all through his gentlesix-minute journey. Even Accenture partner Peter Beardshaw had a go at theslalom, although commentator Matt Chilton noted that Mrs Beardshaw, who hadgone with him to Verbier, was nowhere to be seen by then. “She can hardly bear towatch. She’s hiding behind the sofa!” Not wanting to waste a networkingopportunity, those fun-lovers at the FT held an Alpine Forum on the Saturday, witha panel of celebs including former F1 legend Damon Hill and comedian MarcusBrigstocke. Not quite the stuff of Davos’ endless panels, but that’s a good thing.

RETIRED parents in Britain are twice
as likely to fund their children’s home
deposits than their counterparts in
other English-speaking countries,
with London pensioners even more
likely to support their offspring.
Putting the housing affordability gap
into stark relief, research commis-
sioned by payments provider UKForex
yesterday showed that out of 1,135
British retirees surveyed, 27 per cent
have helped their children with a de-
posit for a house. This is compared
with an average of 18 per cent in Aus-
tralia, Canada, the US and New
Zealand.
The average UK house price is now
£296,549, more than 10 times the
average salary of £27,200, making it
increasingly difficult for first-time
buyers to get on to the property ladder
without support.
UK retirees twice
as likely to fund
kids’ depositIn the capital, where a shortage of
housing and an increasing popula-
tion have made property prices sky-
rocket far more than across the rest
of the UK, one third of pensioners
have helped their grown children
with a deposit.
Londoners are also more than twice
as likely to pay their adult children’s
rent or mortgage, equating to 32 per
cent of respondents compared with
the national average of 15 per cent.
High rents mean that it is often dif-
ficult for young would-be buyers to
save money, leading many to live at
home with their parents.
“Housing affordability in the UK has
become a significant challenge, with
politicians of all stripes seeking solu-
tions,” said Stephanie McMahon, head
of research at estate agents Strutt &
Parker.
“It is no surprise, therefore, that
British parents seek to subsidise their
children’s house purchases.”

THE LONG-standing boss of Daily Mail
and General Trust (DMGT) will step
down at the end of this month, after
27 years at the tabloid paper group.
Martin Morgan will retire as chief
executive, simultaneously stepping
down from the DMGT and
Euromoney boards, from 31 May. He
will leave the company from 30 June,
and take on an advisory role for a
year from January 2017.
Paul Zwillenberg, who is
currently global leader for the
media sector at The Boston
Consulting Group, will take on
the reins from 1 June 2016.
Zwillenberg is already based
in London, and has worked
closely with DMGT for 20
years, the firm said.
His previous roles
include managing director of DMG
Media Digital, formerly Associated
Newspapers Digital.
Chairman Lord Rothermere
said: “DMGT owes Martin a
debt of gratitude for his 27
years’ service and his
leadership of the group’s
transformation.”

Why are you supporting
City Giving Day?
City Giving Day provides a platform to
recognise and inspire businesses in
the City. At Investec we believe in
making an unselfish contribution to
society, embracing diversity, and
nurturing an entrepreneurial spirit.
City Giving Day is another opportunity
for us to live our values.
Which charities do you support?
We partner with community
organisations local to our offices. We
focus on three areas: education,
entrepreneurship and the
environment. Our London offices
support partners including Arrival
Education, Morpeth School, and the
Bromley by Bow Centre - in particular,
the Beyond Business social enterprise
incubation programme.
How will you celebrate City Giving
Day?On the day, we are planning to hold
our annual Beyond Business Dragon’s
Den panel where our volunteers will
help allocate £100,000 from Investec
to 5-6 budding entrepreneurs to assist
them in launching new businesses
and make a positive social impact, in
Tower Hamlets, Hackney and
Newham.
This opportunity was
like winning the
business lottery. I am
so grateful to Investec
for providing us a grant
to start our businesses
and the networking
opportunities, which
are priceless.

Maximising fundraising - Henderson Global InvestorsHenderson have a diverse pool of employees that care for and support a broad range of charities and causes. Enabling employees to donate via Give As You Earn and matching their donation by up to £50 per month per employee, means employees give more to the causes that matter to them. On City Giving Day breakout areas were transformed into information points manned by Hands on Payroll Giving and volunteers. Participation rates in GAYE increased by more than 50%, as a result of the campaign. New participants who have signed up will be donating almost £15,000 per annum from their pre-tax earnings.

Q. Do we have to register to take part?A. Yes. By letting us know you are taking part we can support you with your activities and include you on our roll of honour and other PR activities - joining you up with the rest of the City so that together we can create a much bigger impact as a City.
Q. My company isn’t in the Square Mile, can we still take part?
A. Absolutely! We recognise there are many businesses outside of the Square Mile doing a lot of good for their communities and we are happy to share that story. All you need to do is register online.
Q. Can I collaborate with another company on the day?
A. Yes, the day is all about uniting the City and we would encourage businesses to join up to celebrate the good they do. We already know of some companies who are organising this between them.
Q. How do we make a donation?A. Donations can be made by cheque, BACS or credit card - see page25 for more details.
Q. Can the Lord Mayor come to visit our office?A. The Lord Mayor would love to visit every business taking part, but, the day is only 24 hours long! If you register before the 31st July you will be entered into a draw to win a visit from the Lord Mayor. You will be informed by the end of August if you have been selected as part of the Lord Mayor’s CITY GIVING DAY route.
If you have any further questions please contact the CGD team at [email protected]
If you’re organising a sponsored fundraising event for CITY GIVING DAY, it’s worth setting up an online sponsorship account with companies like Just Giving or Virgin Money Giving - this makes collecting sponsorship money really easy and your sponsors can opt in for Gift Aid too. Gift Aid allows UK charities to claim back the basic rate tax already paid on donations by the donor. This means charities can claim back 25p for every £1 donated from the government, boosting the value of the donation by a quarter.
