How to use a compass By Saeyeon This guide will teach you how to use a compass to help you prepare for next year’s Year 6 camp. This guide will describe to you how to set a compass, how to navigate, and importance of measuring steps. This guide will also give you tips about how to be good at orienteering. The first step is setting a compass. Setting a compass 1. Make sure that you are holding the compass straight in the palm of your hand. 2. Move the dial so that the 0 ° is pointing at the North Arrow. Now you are ready to learn how to find your way and navigate. How to navigate 1. Point the North Arrow to the North if you want to go North. 2. If you want to go to the West, point the red hand to the 270° and then walk towards to the West. 3. To go in a North East direction turn the red hand to 45°. 4. To go South turn the red hand to the 180°. Measuring steps 1. Measure your steps. How many steps do you need to walk 2 metres? This will help you calculate your distance later. 2. Try to practice by focusing on an object and point the red hand in its direction. 3. Walk towards the object. 4. Look at the compass and see which direction you are walking in. 5.  Count your steps and you will be able to see how many meters you have walked.

To create your own measure walk 2 meters from distance and keep counting your steps

when you walk straight to the finish line. When you finish counting the steps you have

to use math problems like when you have to go 20 meters to somewhere try to use

times table it with your steps. For an example that I walk 6 steps in 2 meters and thenwhen you have to go 60 meters from your objective divide 60 to 2 and then times 30

with 6.

4. How to be careful

Don’t stop when you think it’s the wrong way, have a try because you might get the right way.

The counter person must be sure that the measure is correct. To be sure that it is correct, get a

paper and times it or get help from your group friend. You might get lost somewhere if you’re

not doing team work. It is important that the three specialists work together. One is a compass

person, the second specialist is a counter person and the third is a tracking objective person or

checking the group if it’s right.

How to be good at orienteering?

You have to be good at math problems, tracking, listening and have a good memory. If you’re

good at math you can solve problems. If you’re good at tracking you can explore deeper. When

you listen there’s always an answer from the teacher, so listen carefully. The memory is

important because when you solve a problem or when you count you need to remember how

many steps you are going to take.
