Taking the train from Yangon to Mandalay is a bit bumpy, but an amazing experience. You're riding the British-built colonial railway, and can smell the village cooking fires on the breeze that wafts through the window, passing rural life and the occasional golden stupa. A train trip takes about 16 hours. The trains are fairly comfortable and frequently have sleeper and dining cars. Seats are set aside for foreigners, who should try to purchase tickets at least a day in advance at the train station. Price: $30/$35 USD. There are 4 trains a day: 5.00 (express), 5.30, 6.00 and 12.15 pm. The 12.15 offers a sleeper, air-con option for $35/$40 and if the train is as late as normal, you’ll be arriving in Mandalay very early in the morning.
