how to overcome criticism as an online marketer
TRANSCRIPT
dealing with criticism as an
There is no such thing as a business that is widely loved and admired. This is true both traditional
and online. It doesn't matter how good your organization is, you are always going to have to face
naysayers. It is what you do when you find out about that criticism that counts. As a web based
business owner you don't have any face to face discussion to help contradict bad text about you
so this is very true. These are the things you have to do.
It's important to reply rapidly to any kind of criticism you see. This is super important. You don't
want to just let a bad review sit somewhere without responding to it. If the critique was posted in a
public forum, respond to that same thread and thank the person for his or her opinions. Write out
that you are exploring things and then ask the person for permission to continue going over the
matter in private. This will prove to others that your priority is the creation of the best possible
product...and that you don't respond badly when someone criticizes you. It is going to earn you a
lot of respect.
Actually take at least a few minutes investigating the criticism and deciding whether or not you
have to do any sort of rectifying. The differences between a troll and an honest feedback are
obvious. "You suck" does not require a response. "I encountered a 404 page" or "The layout is all
screwed up" are things that you're going to need to correct. Check everything out and if the
change is something you'll need (or want) to make, make it. This proves to others that you are
paying attention and will act when action is necessary.
All your answers must be customized. If you do opt to make a change or a fix, tell the person who
posted the feedback that you are making the changes they asked you to make. It's also good to
put up a post or a response in the forum that says, essentially, the same thing. That demonstrates
to everyone that you can take constructive feedback without getting mad. It indicates that you
work hard to give people what they really want. This is a good idea even if you do not make a
change that somebody asks for. Let them know you checked things out but chose not to act. Be
sure you clarify why this is.
Keep in mind, above all else, how you react to feedback is all about reputation management. If
you just criticize someone for criticizing you, you appear stupid. If you ignore the criticism people
have given to you and insist that everything is okay, you are going to appear as if you do not
understand your company or product well. Keep your ego on a leash. For the most part, the
criticism isn't intended to be about you personally. They didn't have a gratifying experience with
your product or service. This implies that you must improve the product so that they won't have a
repeat of that same experience.
The way you deal with critique tells people quite a lot about both you and the business you are
running. It's important to remain positive!
