If you are among those who thinkyou don’t have enough time during the day and feel like rushing one thing toother and hardly achieve the goal, then follow the followings:

Set SMART goals (SMART-Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic andTimely)

Monitor your time and note how you spend your time (personal essentials,set/fixed parts, travel time, technology time-TV, phone, the Internet, etc.)

Identify the free time on weekdays and weekends, Develop daily, weekly and term plan Develop a schedule (To Do list) Define the priorities Complete the high-priority task when you feel highly energetic Follow the schedule according to priority with full dedication and

commitment Measure your achievement Reward yourself on your achievement

Managing your time before and during the exam plays an important role inachieving a high score on an exam. TIME MANAGEMENT – BEFORE THE TEST

Attend your school regularly as it provides you an opportunity to gain knowledgeand clarify your doubts. Every teacher wants its student to succeed in any examand therefore, will often clarify your doubts that will enable you to preparebetter for the exam. Always complete your homework and fully participate inschool activities like sports, debating, public speaking, music or activities whichyou enjoy the most. NotesEdu recommends spending at least one hour daily tocomplete the homework and review the topic covered in the school. Generally, school going students spend their time in the following manner.

According to Metlife Survey of the American Teachers(https://www.metlife.com/metlife-foundation/about/survey-american-teacher.html ) students who spend between 1-3 hours of their time incompleting their homework have more chances of scoring A’s in their exam. Forweekdays, NotesEdu recommends the students to study one hour on homeworkand two hours in preparing for Selective & Scholarship Placement test.

Some of you might say that you don’t have three hours for study or three hourson weekdays are too much. We recommend you to identify the activities whereyou can reduce or eliminate the non-productive time spend, for example, spending time on video games, the Internet or TV.

Now assess the time spend on weekends. If you schedule your weekend timeaccording to below table than you have extra 14 hours every weekend for study. To achieve your goal of getting a placement in a school of your choice you needcommitment and dedication of spending enough time for preparing Selective &Scholarship test. You have to make your own decision, whether to use theavailable 14 hours on a weekend for study or other non-productive activities, which might please you at the moment.

From the above table, you now have 35 hours (21 hours on weekdays + 14hours on a weekend) every week. Now the next question is how to use this timeeffectively.

STUDY SKILLS Avoid distractions like wandering thoughts, phone, TV and internet etc Challenge negative thinking by positive thoughts Continuously follow the schedule and meet the deadline without any

failure Review the concept which you feel difficult Study difficult subject first when you feel highly energetic Be active learner, i.e., brainstorm the topic, create mind map, highlight,

and test yourself by making probable questions, which can be tested inthe exam

Take a short break of 5 minutes for every one hour of study Remember your goal Reward your hard work

TIME MANAGEMENT – DURING THE TEST

Selective High School Placement test is multiple choices timed exam and mostcommon reasons students do poorly on the test is running out of time. This testchecks the test taker ability to process fairly large amount of information in theprescribed time. You might come across questions which you have never seenbefore. The examiner wants to check, how you use different concepts, filter theexcessive information to comprehend the relevant data, and attention to detailin solving a complex interrelated problem. This is the reason you see lengthyquestions in mathematics and general ability. Test takers lacking the test-takingexperience and skills perform silly mistakes due to time pressure and loss offocus.

All questions in the test are of same value in terms of marks so why to sacrificeeasy questions by spending more time on harder questions. Some test takergets panic when they discover that the question they solved does not have theiranswer in the given answer choices. Test-taking strategies will guide you whenand how to skip a question and come back later so that you don’t lose marks.NotesEdu highly recommends that you must develop your test-taking strategiesto improve your score.

Please read the commonly time management issue faced by test taker andNotesEdu recommendations to manage your time effectively during the exam.

Test Taker Issue 1:

You spend more time on one question, which increases your anxiety and affectsyour confidence and thought process. It leads you to attempt next few questionshurriedly. You make careless errors and get them wrong.

NotesEdu Recommended Actions:

If any question is taking longer (say more than 90 seconds), then use theelimination method and make a knowledgeable guess. Circle the questionto come back if time is available at the end.

Worry is enticing to accelerate so don’t worry. Find out the type of questions taking longer than 90 seconds while

attempting NotesEdu Free and Premium Selective & Scholarship test.Review the concept behind such questions.

Harder questions take longer time whereas verbal question takes lesstime. Attempt easy questions first, which will give you confidence andwarm up your brain to solve the tougher questions quickly.

There is no reward for solving the question step by step until you get theanswer. However, looking and plugging the answer choices can speed upthe calculation and save your time.

Relax and breathe

Test Taker Issue 2:

It is tempting to answer each question correctly, even at the expense of time.

NotesEdu Recommended Actions:

It is fine to take longer than 60 seconds on a question but makes sure youcounter-balance this by taking less than 60 seconds to answer otherquestions

Note you need not to answer all questions correctly; you can sacrifice the

question taking longer time by eliminating and guessing.

Ensure you get five easy or medium questions correct in the time you

would have wasted on one hard question

Test Taker Issue 3:

You constantly look at the watch or timer.

NotesEdu Recommended Actions:

Avoid looking at watch or timer as it wastes few seconds and increasesyour anxiety.

Spend no more than 6 minutes on five questions needing calculation andanalysis

Spend no more than 4 minutes on five verbal questions Look at watch or timer after 10 minutes and if you are able to attempt 10

questions than you are within the time limit While practising NotesEdu Premium and Free Selective & Scholarship Test

tracks the time you took for each question by using the lap timer (oniPhone or online). Each time when you finish a question press the splitbutton. Analyze the lap time to see what type of questions takes less timeand what type of questions takes more time. Make a log of suchquestions, which take more time. With your experience, you will knowhow much is 10 minutes.

If you are falling behind the time limit, then make an educated guess andcircle the questions to come back if the time permit

Test Taker Issue 4:

No time left to finish the last five questions, so I have to guess and even left fewquestion blank.

NotesEdu Recommended Actions:

Don’t spend more than 2-3 seconds to fill in the bubble. Don’t worry aboutthe neatly filing the bubble.

Use elimination and knowledgeable guess for difficult and confusingquestions. Circle the questions and come back later if the time permit

Spend less than 20 seconds on easy questions (e.g., verbal in generalability) and 90 seconds for the difficult and confusing questions.

Practice sufficient number of simulated test Accuracy is more important than speed. Relax if you are confident that

rest of the questions you attempted are correct.

The clock is ticking, and you have 40 minutes to answer 40 questions inmathematics, 40 minutes to answer 45 questions in reading and 40 minutes toanswer 60 questions in general ability. Actually, you have less time to answerthese questions.

Please see the below table carefully to note the actual time left for eachquestion. This exercise will prepare you to minimise the non-productive activitiesduring the test.
