1. Click on Programs than Microsoft Excel

2. Type the following into the Chart

a. Column A Row 1: Player Nameb. Column B Row 1: Number of

Hitsc. Column C Row 1: At Bats d. Column D Row 1: Batting

4. Type in the player’s names in Column A

3. Notice that Player name is too wide for the column. Hold your cursor on the line between column A and column B, and then pull to the right to widen the column

5. Finish entering data for the other columns, except the Batting Average column

6. The formula for determining batting averages is:

Number of Hits / At Bats

We need to program the spreadsheet to calculate the batting averages for our New York Yankee Players. In Johnny Damon’s case 4 Hits divided by 17 at Bats would make Johnny’s Batting Average to be .235 or called 235.

We will now use Microsoft Excel to calculate the batting averages for all of the New York Yankees. This can be done by using cell addresses to tell the computer what we ant it to do. In the case of Johnny Damon in column D row 2: Batting Averages type =b2/c2 then press the enter button to get .235

9. Now we will create a bar graph to compare Batting Averages from the 2006 New York Yankees Stats.

10. Click on the Chart Wizard icon in the upper icon bar

Highlight the Player Name & Batting Averagesa. Position the mouse at cell a1; hold the left mouse

button down and drag down to cell a13. Then let go of the mouse button

b. Hold down the Ctrl key and don’t let goc. Position the mouse at cell d1; hold the left mouse

11. The first dialog box appears. Click on Column Chart and then on Next12. The next dialog box appears. You do not need to change anything click on Next. 13. In the Step 3 of 4 box you will need to type in titles

Chart Title: 2006 New York Yankees Batting Averages

Category (X) axis: Players Names

Value (Y) axis: Batting Average

Click next, and then click on As New Sheet. Finally click on Finish
