    Irrespective of whether you

    are in a manufacturing or

service industry, OHSAS 18001will benefit your organisation.

    Health & SafetyOHSAS 18001

    What is OHSAS 18001?

OHSAS 18001 has been developed by a group of major certification

bodies, consultants and national standards bodies and is similar in

concept to the ISO 9000 and ISO 14001 standards.

The aim of OHSAS 18001 is to help you operate a managed, safe

and healthy working environment, taking full account of all relevant

legislation. Underpinning this is a requirement to establish and

maintain a formal Safety Management System (SMS) ensuring a

planned and systematic approach to safety issues and risk assessment.

Other systems such as BS 8800 and HS(G) 65 can easily be integrated

with the requirements of OHSAS 18001.

    Benefits to you

    OHSAS 18001 is the

    internationally recognised

    Occupational Safety and Health

    (OSH) Management System that

    enables you to integrate fully

    your existing OSH management

    system within the management

of the business, thus avoidinga ‘bolt on’ scenario.

OHSAS 18001 is not just about

    compliance with legal

    requirements; it emphasises

    management commitment,

    objective setting and continual

    improvement. The framework

    is set around risk assessment,

this being the main driver in

    eliminating and reducing risk

coming into, through and out of

    the business.

    This risk assessment framework

    sets OHSAS 18001 apart from

other systems, such as HS(G) 65,

    which focus mainly on compliance

    with legal obligations.

    Benefits include:

    • increased staff motivation

    • reduced operating costs

    • potentially lower insurance

    premiums

    • reduced risk of incidents

    which could lead to

    prosecution

    • a public demonstration of

    due diligence

    • an enhanced corporate image

    • a reduction in accident costs

    How is it achieved?

    The implementation of an SMS

    has three distinct phases:Phase 1

    Preliminary review

    This is essentially a risk

    assessment process, which

    recognises levels of compliance

    and so facilitates a programme

    of continuous improvement.

It also takes into account the

    risk profile of your organisation.

    Phase 2

    System set-up

    This is basically the

    implementation process, having

    regard to the preliminary review.

    Areas to be assessed include:

    • safety policy and objectives

    • management commitment,roles and responsibilities

    • hazard identification, risk

    assessment and risk control

    • resources, training

    and competence

    • operational controls, safety

    rules, permit-to-work systems

    and enforcement

    • action plans and programmes

    • consultation and communication

    • OSH procedures and records

    • accident / incident reporting,

    investigation, non-conformities

    and corrective and preventive

    action

    • emergency preparedness

    and response

    • performance measurement

    and monitoring internal audits

    • management review of the

    OSH management system

    • continual improvement

    Phase 3

    Assessment

This includes a full desk study

    and on-site verification

    of implementation.

    Upon successful assessment,

    organisations will be awarded

    a certificate of registration for

    18001 which is recognised not

    just nationally, but internationally.
