INSPIRATION

INSPIRE A GENERATION INSPIRED FOR A SHORT PERIOD TILL THE

OLYMPICS FINISH HAVE BIG IDEAS INSPIRATION DISAPPEARED

MR ANDREW DEAN: THE OLYMPICS MADE EVERYONE WANT TO TAKE PART – UNTIL THE WEATHER KICKED IN. BUT THERE WAS NO FORMAL LEGACY WITH THE OLYMPICS PARK BEING CLOSED UNTIL JULY IT KIND OF CAME AND WENT AND NOW HAS BEEN FORGOTTEN

THE ASHES IS PLAYED FOR IN ENGLAND

PRESENT GOVERNMENT

THE PRESENT COALISION GOVERNMENT CUT THE FUNDING FOR SCHOOLS.

Page 12: How successful is the legacy of the Olympics 2012, for school students in the age group 11-16?

“Our approach differs fundamentally from that of the last government. As part of this change of approach I have concluded that the existing network of school sport partnerships is neither affordable nor likely to be the best way to help schools achieve their potential in improving competitive sport” – Michael Gove

GOVERNMENT STRATEGY

Page 13: How successful is the legacy of the Olympics 2012, for school students in the age group 11-16?

GOVERNMENT STRATEGY

DESPITE EARLIER FUNDING ONLY 2 OUT OF 5 CHILDREN IN STATE SCHOOLS PLAYED COMPETITIVE SPORT AND ONLY 1 OUT OF 5 CHILDEREN PLAYED REGULARLY AGAINST OTHER SCHOOLS.

Page 14: How successful is the legacy of the Olympics 2012, for school students in the age group 11-16?

OPPORTUNITIESARE YOUNG PEOPLE GETTING THE OPPORTUNITIES?

ONLY OFFER P.E AS A GSCE PRIVATE FUNDING AND SPONSORSHIP

STEVE REDGRAVE, HIMSELF AN EX-PUPIL AT GREAT MARLOW SCHOOL, HAS GENEROUSLY DONATED A BOAT AND A PARENT HAS PROVIDED COACHING.

Page 15: How successful is the legacy of the Olympics 2012, for school students in the age group 11-16?

PRIVATE EDUCATION WHY ARE MOST OLYMPIANS PRIVATELY EDUCATED?

PRIVATE SCHOOLS SPEND TWICE AS LONG PLAYING SPORTS.

THE SPORT IS A HIGHER QUALITY THAN WHAT IS PLAYED IN STATE SCHOOLS

THEY GET MORE OPPORTUNITIES IF YOU ARE TALENTED.

Page 16: How successful is the legacy of the Olympics 2012, for school students in the age group 11-16?

PRIVATE EDUCATION

DAVID CAMERON, WHO WAS EDUCATED AT ETON, SAID THAT JUST LAST MONTH

“INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS PRODUCE MORE THAN THEIR FAIR SHARE OF (OLYMPIC) MEDAL WINNERS”

Page 17: How successful is the legacy of the Olympics 2012, for school students in the age group 11-16?

Neil Whitfield has analyzed these figures some more:

“When dividing the number of medals won by the current number of children in private and state education, we can scale for population size. Calculating the ratio of scaled medals, we can see that a child is actually nearly 8 times more likely win a gold medal for Team GB at the Olympic Games if they come from private education.”

PRIVATE EDUCATION

CONCLUSION

DEPENDING ON WHAT SCHOOL YOU GO TO, THE AMOIUNT OF SPORT PLAYED DIFFERS AND VARIES.

THE LEGACY HASN’T BEEN SUCCESSFUL EVERYONE TO INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF SPORT

PLAYED THIS HAS NOT HAPPENED MINORITY SPORTS – CYCLING, CANOEING, ROWING, JUDO, SHOOTING EQUESTRIAN

Page 19: How successful is the legacy of the Olympics 2012, for school students in the age group 11-16?

CONCLUSION

IN MY OPINION:

CHILDREN IN THE AGE GROUP 11-16 SHOULD BE GIVEN ACCESS TO MINORITY SPORTS

THROUGH THE USE OF EXTERNAL FACILITIES OR SPECIALIST COACHES

ALL FUNDED BY THE GOVERNMENT
