Who am I…?• I live in Copenhagen, Denmark• I have worked with online media since 1997• I have written 2 books on job search • I try to do as I preach (most of the time ;-)

What Social Media has done for me, so far: • I am #1 on Google (Danish keywords)• I don’t (need to) write job applications• I get to work with like-minded people• I get invitations to hold presentations• Reporters call me to write articles on job search• I learn, I grow and I have fun!

This is my story on my first social media journey…

My first journey: Building my reputation as ’expert onhow to use online media for recruitment and job search’

• I launched my blog in 2009 (in Danish)http://mariannesteen.wordpress.com

• I used a lot of content from my bookwww.soegjob.net : http://www.soegjob.dk

• I knew that jobseekers are looking for casesSo I published examples of cover letters and templates for CVs

• My goal was to be No. 1 on Google within my niche

Do you enjoy writing job applications?

ROI for job applications?• How much time have you spent on writing

job applications for advertised jobs?

Do you know...• How many/ who are you competing against?

• And on which terms?• When you get a ”NO!” – do you know WHY?

Applying for job ads means…

– You have to pretend you match what the company wants

– You spend hours on producing content to get 10 seconds of attention - once

– For every ”No” – you have to start from scratch again

Frustration: Frustra in latin means ”in vain”

Social media as job attraction tool

• Social media enables you to build your own media platform – for free

• Every time you publish, you add value• As time goes by –you benefit even more• Bonus! Learning by doing makes you a social

media manager (adding a career opportunity)

• Social media is not a magic potion or magic wandTo succeed you need work, consistency and patience

and taking action
