ST. DOMINIC CATHOLIC CHURCH PALM SUNDAY PASSION OF THE LORD

HOUSTON, TX APRIL 5, 2020

Dear Friends of St. Dominic, Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday are called the Triduum, three days that are the highlight of the Church year. There are two Gospels proclaimed at today's Mass. The first Gospel, proclaimed before the procession with palms, tells of Jesus' triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. Riding on a borrowed colt, Jesus was hailed by the crowds as they shouted blessings and praise to God. This event is reported in each of the four Gospels. As we begin this holy week, we are given a preview of where this week is heading. Although we use the term ‘passion’ with reference to the suffering of Jesus, in normal day to day usage the term refers to a strong feeling or a strong commitment. We all have a passion in that sense. The term can be readily applied to Jesus in this same sense. He suffered his passion, because he had a great passion, a passion for God and for humanity. He died because he was passionately devoted to revealing God’s love for all. In taking the cup of wine at the last supper, Jesus said, ‘this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, which is to be poured out for many, for the forgiveness of sins’. Jesus’ death reveals God’s merciful and faithful love, a love that is stronger than sin, no matter how grave. When Jesus spoke of his blood poured out for ‘many’, the many included those who were responsible for his death; it includes all of us. We approach this Holy Week with reverence because we know that the last journey of Jesus was one that he travelled for all of us. We are not simply spectators at an event that happened a long time ago and that has no real connection with us. We tell this story every year because it is our story. It is the ongoing story of God’s reaching out to us through his Son. It is the story of a divine love that is always stronger than human sin. Jesus poured out his life for us in love; we are called to pour out our lives in love for him and for each other. Let the palms that we will we take home this day be a sign of our desire to do just that. Throughout Holy Week, we will continue to reflect on the events of Jesus' passion and death. As we meditate on the cross, we ask again and anew what it means to make the statement of faith that Jesus, in his obedient suffering and dying, revealed himself to us as God's Son and brought to fulfillment the Kingdom of God. Rev. Roger Estorque

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.

ST. DOMINIC CATHOLIC CHURCH PALM SUNDAY PASSION OF THE LORD

HOUSTON, TX APRIL 5, 2020

Palm Sunday of the passion of the Lord

God greatly exalted [Christ] and bestowed on him the name

which is above every name. — Philippians 2:9

— Filipenses 2:9

THE VISIT TO THE SEVEN CHURCHES On Maundy Thursday night, once the Blessed Sacrament has been moved to the monument and exposed for the adoration of the faithful, there is a popular tradition of visiting seven churches or temples. Said tradition it began thanks to the Eucharistic fervor of Saint Philip Neri (1515-1595), motivating people to also meditate on the seven moments or "visits" that Jesus made on the night of his judgment when visiting the temples for the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Meditation begins precisely in the olive garden to end on Calvary. The fact that Jesus is carried from one place to another is remembered in a context of faith and adoration of his real presence in the Holy Eucharist. For visits there is no established ritual, however, the popular practice is to pray a season to the Blessed Sacrament (Three Fathers, including Hail Mary, Glory to the Father and the Eucharistic ejaculatory) and then leave a moment of silence to accompany Jesus in his agony. The last visit should be in the home parish.

Suspension of week-end masses has a great impact on our parishes. Without weekly collections, parishes today are facing financial stress amid the coronavirus pandemic. Like all other parishes, we rely on the weekend Mass collections to make ends meet. Without the Sunday collection basket, our parishes will soon not have enough money to pay the bills. In this regard, WE would like to make this appeal to all those who are in a position to be able to offer an emergency alm or donation to please give/ to get through the month We would like to ask also all parishioners to switch to online giving.. For online giving please visit our parish website.. stdominichouston.org– or you may bring your donation drop in the black box with lock to the right of the office or make a check to St. Dominic church and send vial mail. In this time, the online giving platform is more practical and when churches are closed

THE CROSS We should glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,

in whom is our salvation, life and resurrection, through whom we are saved and delivered.
