From the CEO

Dear Friends,

We are humbled each day to be present for our neighbors during some of their most difficult times and to be able to walk alongside them daily. I’m always amazed at people’s resilience, their patience and drive. Our faithful staff is here to provide neighbors in need with encouragement, resources, education support, and in the simplest form, a hand up. In the same way that they need us, we need you. We are thankful to be part of a community that wants to provide a hand up, not a hand out to our neighbors. We are thankful for you. Best, Rachel Gammon, CEO [email protected]

Core Values of the NNH

The main philosophy that drives the NNH is that we are in the business of serving

others efficiently and effectively. Core

principles for daily operations are centered on:

Accountability- We will require

accountability from our clients reflected

in the fact that they must pay part of their bill before NNH will

contribute financially. In the same manner, the

NNH will be accountable to its

donors by conducting its operations in a

fiscally responsible manner.

Respect- Every

person will be treated with respect.

Communication- Effective

communication builds meaningful relationships with clients and donors.

Passion- To be able to impact an

individual’s life in a positive manner, we must be passionate about serving and

meeting their needs.

He has worked hard his whole life and always provided for his family but had an accident on a job site that left him with a fractured spine. Sam’s wife had not worked in several years but started a part-time job while he was out of work. After helping with the electric bill, Sam started crying. He thanked our Case Manager but said they really needed wood for the winter. Wood is the only way to heat their home and he could no longer chop the wood himself. Our Case Manager connected with a local pastor who had the wood chopped and delivered to Sam’s house. The family was so grateful!

We were so excited to open a permanent North Hamilton County office in June 2016! This new office is located right in front of the Walmart in Soddy Daisy at 9358 Dayton Pike. The space includes an office for Case Management, a community room for partner organizations and a thrift store.

An elderly couple was having a hard time with their monthly mortgage. They both get social security, but the wife had to have knee surgery that added some extra expenses for them. NNH was able to help with a bill and referral to the Ladies of Charity Christmas Program. They received Walmart gift cards to help through the holidays. We were also able to connect the couple to a local church who helped pay their mortgage one month so they could get back on track.

Jason*, a kindergartener at Red Bank Elementary, is the youngest of four boys in a home with his single dad. He came to NNH for Summer Camp in 2016 and started the after- school program this fall. When he first started, he did not know his alphabet or how to write his name or count. Now, he is reading on a level B and can count to 100! He is proficient in math as well. We are very proud of Jason and his hard work!

“I love that there are people here who care about me and support me in my learning. They have books here so we can complete our summer reading and not get behind.” -Joey*, 8th grade Summer Camp participant

Adult Education

Did you know? The state of Tennessee no longer

has GED Testing. It’s now called the HiSET (high

school equivalency test).

38 Adult Educationstudents served

Sarah, a single mother, has been attending classes since October 2016. She has passed all of her HiSET tests except math. She is still working on improving her math skills and will be taking that test shortly. She loves the NNH so much that she enrolled her daughter in our After-school Program.

Introducing Tara Phillips We were very excited to hire

our new Adult Education Coordinator in 2016. Tara has

Master’s degrees in special education and social work. She is wonderful with our students

and we are fortunate to have her on staff!

Stephanie*, a woman in her 60s, comes faithfully to the Adult Education classes and scored high in all areas except math. She made a promise to herself that she would stick with it, so she continues to work hard to develop her skills and hopes to pass the HiSET this year. Way to go, Stephanie!

Over 2,000 people served through the Healthy Families Program

During Family Dinner Nights, families receive a healthy meal and have time to socialize

with one another. After dinner, parents hear from experts about topics such as child health

and saftey, finances, and bullying.

This year, we started giving pedometers to Cooking Class

participants so they can track their steps while making healthier life-

style choices! Many students started seeing results right away.

B etty* is a faithful computer class

attendee. She was having a hard time keeping up with her finances because she is on a very tight budget with widow’s benefits and did not know how to check her online bank account to monitor her balance. Betty brought her own computer to our computer lab and our Case Manager was able to bookmark her bank’s website for her

and even set up the online account with her. She was amazed at how easy it was to get instant answers about her account! Betty has strict dietary needs, so our Case Manager was able to show her cooking videos and other websites with healthy recipes.

Healthy Families Program

Kristin started coming to Cooking Classes six months ago and was really inspired to make some changes. Since then, she has cut back on red meat (only eats it once or twice a month), started drinking green tea, and walks everywhere. She has been keeping up with her steps with one of our pedometers. She went to the doctor recently and was so excited to see she has lost 21 pounds in six months thanks to all of the healthy changes she made.

Computer Classes teach participants about basic typing skills, how to search the Internet, and how to develop a resume and conduct online job searches.

We partner with Tech Goes Home to offer

computer skills classes. Participants can

purchase a Chromebook for $50 at the completion

of the program.

At Family Dinner Nights in North Hamilton County

schools, we served an average of

130 people per month.
