January of this year. I work both at the NAEP office on home visits and at Redbird Elementary. I come from Maine and although I have been here 11 years in Mesa, I still have a slight Maine accent. I am having a wonderful time in my new position. I tutor 2 days a week at Redbird Elementary (Wednesday and Thursday) and spend 2 days a week on home visits. So far, the people I have met are so wonderful. Everyone has be warm and welcoming. Can’t ask for better than that. My work experience has been varied. In Maine and all over Northern New England, I ran my own business as a consultant for small businesses. In actuality, I did a lot of teach business owners and their staff how to operate and more organized and profitable business. I really loved seeing the successes. I also taught at the University of Southern Maine, helping business owners understand financials, software and how to start their own business. Many years ago, I substituted at the High School level. It helped pay my way through college. For the last 2 years, I have substituted here in Mesa with elementary school children. I am looking forward to meeting many more of you and getting to know you. Jody Barbour Instructional Assistant Fremont junior High School

Hello! My name is Jody Barbour and I am an Instructional Assistant/Tutor for the Native American Education Program at Fremont Junior High. This is my first year in this position and I am blessed to have so many helpful

and caring co-workers who have taken their time to share their knowledge with me. I have already learned so much! I hope to encourage each student and help them when they have difficulties. I help students with organization, homework, understanding concepts. I tutor them in specific subjects or I can help them edit their work. I encourage students to try their best and to ask questions because they are responsible for their own future! I involve parents and guardians by communicating with them and encouraging them to become more involved. I also try to recognize our students who are achieving great grades or working hard to improve. Sometimes, I am someone to listen. On a personal note, I am originally from Canada. I am married and have 2 wonderful boys, in 7th and 10th grade. We spend a lot of time cheering for them at their games. We enjoy camping, hiking, riding our four-

wheelers, I enjoy travelling, reading and baking.

Summer Aguirre

Summer Dream Aguirre is a 5th grader at Wilson Elementary. Summer is Navajo from the Towering house clan born for the Manygoats clan with both her grandparents being Hispanic. Summer is an honor student at Wilson. She has received a Wildcat award this year for her outstanding grades and for being a great leader to her peers. Although Summer excels in academics, her heart is really in sports. She has played softball, basketball, football and has also been a cheerleader. This past fall Summer was the only girl in her division to play both offense and defense in tackle football, playing for the AZ Kings. It was then she realized the true meaning of hard work and dedication. On days when the weather was 100+ degrees, she spent hours in the heat practicing, pushing herself physically and still continued to make time to study at home and make honor roll all year. She out ran boys twice her size and did it to prove a point, that she could push herself to do anything she wants to do if she works hard. All her past teachers and coaches would agree that Summer may not be the best on the team but her heart is in everything she does. Summer is only 10 but she has already begun researching colleges that she wants to attend and countries she wants to travel, already teaching herself to speak Italian. She looks up to her role model, Shoni Schimmel, with plans to one day obtain a basketball scholarship and eventually play professional basketball. Summer appreciates that Shoni represents her Native people and hopes to do the same. We are so proud of her successes thus far and hope that she continue to be courageous and do what makes her spirit truly happy.

Oscar Maldonado

Oscar is a brilliant student in 7th grade at Fremont. He plays the Alto Saxophone and has been playing since he was in 5th grade. He chose to play this instrument because his mother used to play tenor Sax and he thought it would be fun. He is glad because he greatly enjoys playing. According to Mr. Atchison, the band teacher and director, “he is one of my strongest 7th grade students”. His favorite song to play, currently, is Royal Overture but when it comes to listening to music, he does not have a favorite. He listens to a wide variety of music. He enjoys school at Fremont. His favorite subjects are Math and Science. They are so interesting to him. He likes middle school because it is open and it gives students responsibility for their own work.

Watch out for more exciting achievements from Oscar!

Jocee Henderson, Mya Johnson and Janae Begay

Westwood High School Marcus Mannie

Marcus won the 2016 Talking Stick Scholar Athlete Excellence Award. The award is a renewable scholarship to the college or university of Marcus’s choice. The following is Westwood High School’s football coach nomination write up.

Marcus Mannie is a Native American originally from the Ganado Chapter Navajo Nation Tribe, located in northeastern Arizona. His grandparents still live on the Ganado community which is home to approximately 1,210 residents. Marcus and his mother moved to the Valley several years ago in order to afford him many opportunities not readily available on the Reservation.

Mannie has done his best to honor his family and heritage, and in both his junior and senior years received the Native American Community Scholar awards, from the SHIELD Connection. The criteria included maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or above. Marcus also participated in the State-wide Math Competitions, and feels that these awards are relevant because there are fewer Native Americans than other minorities in higher education. The Talking Stick Award for Excellence is intended to assist in countering these problems, and Marcus plans to apply this scholarship by obtaining a higher college degree, and serving as an inspiration to his fellow Native Americans on the reservations.

Mannie is described by one teacher as, “a well-rounded, multi-talented person who excels in many areas”. In addition to 4-years of football and plans to run track this year, Marcus began playing violin at an early age. He is a member of both the Band and Orchestra, and when students from Kino and Carson Junior High Schools recently joined the Future Warrior Concert, Marcus proudly boasted of, “... keeping the orchestral fires burning in their bodies”.

ASU RECHARGE Submitted by Mr. Hill, Westwood SHIELD Co-coordinator

The annual Arizona State University RECHARGE conference empowers Native American students in grades 7-12 to take charge of their education and invest in their future and community. The event includes engaging activities and inspiring presentations, including topics on culture and identity, college readiness, financial aid and scholarships, college majors, and specialized ASU campus resources. Westwood Shield program sent out an open invitation to all students through canvass and announcements. Nineteen students expressed interest in attending and seventeen students completed their required parent permission forms to attend Conference. Upon arrival at the ASU Memorial Union the students met with many different vendors who shared career opportunities and campus organizations to help Native American students find success with their post education goals. Westwood students joined over 400 students from around the state. The conference was educational, informative and inspiring. It certainly “RECHARGED” our students to prepare for their future.

The ASU Recharge was a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience the ASU campus and interact with Native students from around the state.

15

Mesa Strength Youth Council

On February 13th, the Mesa Strength Youth Council attended the UNITY Mid-Year conference in Downtown Mesa with over 400 Native youth participants from across the country. At the conference Mesa Strength hosted a food sampling event. The goal was for southwestern tribes to share their traditional foods with visiting tribes. The event was a success, with the possibility for UNITY to host another local Traditional foods event at their national conference this summer in Oklahoma City.

Great job students!

HELP! Bed bugs!

A Natural, Organic and inexpensive way

to get rid of bed bugs! Buy Diatomaceous

Earth (food grade not pool grade!) You

can find it in the garden section at Home

Depot. It comes in a bright yellow bag for

under ten dollars. It is an organic choice

and it is NOT harmful to pets. Wear a mask

when you apply it so you don’t breathe it

into your lungs. Dust the white powder

under your bed and around the bedposts.

The bugs will crawl through the white

powder and it gets under their shells and

dehydrates them. They will die within

three or four days.

Vacuum your mattress and

around your bed daily, then

reapply the DE. Bed bugs are

hard to get rid of so you need

to do this for about three

months. You can get rid of

these pests with some

vigilance! Take back your

house!

Diatomaceous Earth is also an

excellent way to get rid of ants,

spiders, and cock roaches. Be

careful not to breathe in the

dust. Use a mask to apply.
