A new facility featuring

Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing is expected to open in 2014 near Calgary, Alberta, the partners in the project announced Dec. 4.United Horsemen of

Alberta and Century Casinos said the racetrack and gaming facility will be called Century Downs Racetrack and Casino. The partners said funding of about $24 million for the project has been secured.Harness racing would

begin by the end of 2014, according to projections. The first Thoroughbred meet

would be held in 2016.Calgary was home to

Stampede Park, where horseracing ended in 2008. United Horsemen of Alberta has spent more than a decade attempting to develop and open a racetrack and entertainment center in Calgary.Officials said Century

Downs will have a 5 1/2-furlong racing surface, 550 gaming machines, an off-track betting area, and a bar, lounge, and restaurant. The track will be located less than a mile north of Calgary not far from the Calgary International Airport.

On November 20, 2013, the

North American International Catalogue Standards Committee (NAICSC) issued a reminder that effective January 1, 2014, additional quality control requirements will be implemented for races in North America eligible for non-Listed black-type in catalogues compliant with guidelines required by the Society of International Thoroughbred Auctioneers (SITA).The NAICSC

establishes the requirements for non-Listed black type races in sales catalogues produced in North America that are compliant with

guidelines required by SITA.Races eligible for

non-Listed black-type status include stakes races with a purse of $50,000 or more that are open or have restrictions allowed by NAICSC (e.g., state bred, stallions’ progeny, sales graduates or non-winners of a sweepstakes). The new

requirements, which were first announced in November 2012, include the addition of a minimum Race Quality Score (RQS) for individual age/sex divisions. Statistics used in the evaluation of Graded and Listed races, including ratings provided by the North American Rating

Committee, are not available for non-Listed black-type races. The RQS provides an alternative quality control measurement for these races. The RQS is a

composite number compiled by using speed figures for the first four finishers in each race over three years. Four speed figures are used to compile the RQS and are provided by Bloodstock Research Information Systems (BRIS), Daily Racing Form (Beyer), Equibase and Thoro-Graph.A complete listing of

non-Listed black-type races with their 2014 black-type status, their current RQS and the

minimum RQS requirements for each age/sex division and additional information about the NAICSC and the new quality control requirements are available at www.northamericaniscs.com.WTBOA Sales

Committee chairman Debbie Pabst checked the status of Emerald Downs black-type races and found that all of the stakes have qualified non-Listed black-type, including all of Washington Cup and the Northwest Stallion Stakes. She felt that the Emerald Downs stakes races appear to be mostly way above the minimum requirements.

Mine That Bird, the underdog racehorse that won the 2009 Kentucky Derby (G1), is the focus of a new Hollywood film 50 to 1 that opens in the-aters March 21, 2014. The news was announced by 50 to 1 director, producer, co-writer and racehorse owner Jim Wilson (Oscar-winning producer of Dances With Wolves). Starring in the film are Skeet Ulrich (Jericho, Scream, As Good as It Gets), Christian Kane (Leverage), William Devane (24, The Dark Knight Rises), Todd Lowe (True Blood, Gilmore Girls) and newcomer Madelyn Deutch, as well as real-life jockey Calvin Borel, who plays himself in the picture. Faith Conroy co-wrote the script with Wilson. The film, which is rooted in New Mexico and shot in over 30 locations throughout the state - from Santa Fe to Las Cruces - will kick off the theatrical release with the world premiere in Albuquerque at the historic KiMo Theatre on March 19.50 to 1 is about a misfit group of New Mexico cowboys who find themselves on the journey of a

lifetime when their crooked-footed racehorse qualifies for the Kentucky Derby. The cowboys face a series of mishaps on their way to Churchill Downs, becoming the ultimate underdogs in a final showdown with the world’s racing elite. “I had been waiting for a great racehorse story for a very long time,” Wilson said, noting he had read numerous horse racing scripts over the years, “but when I watched what unfolded at the 2009 Kentucky Derby, I was stunned. I’ve always been a fan of true underdog stories and after meeting the owners, trainer and finally Bird himself, I was hooked. This story had all the cinematic elements you could ask for. It’s been a real adventure and one I am proud to share with the world.” Wilson won the Academy Award® for Best Picture for Dances With Wolves, which he produced. He also produced The Bodyguard, Wyatt Earp, Sing Vote, Mr. Brooks and Message in a Bottle. Wilson’s previous directing credits include Head Above Water, Whirlygirl and the critically-acclaimed documentary about re-nowned jockey Laffit Pincay, Jr., Laffit: All About Winning.

When three-year-old Midnight Casanova won a $20,000 maiden claiming race at Betfair Hollywood Park on November 12, he became the 40th winner from the 46 starters and 52 horses cataloged in the 2011-12 Pegasus Thorough-breds Two-year-olds-in-Training Sales thatwere held by Mark Dedomenico and Glen Todd. Two horses, With Council (2011 $75,000 Ascot Graduation Stakes at Hastings Race Course) and Broken Sword (2012 $50,000 Juan Gonzalez

Memorial Stakes at Santa Rosa) broke their maidens in stakes and another nine were maiden special weight winners. Thorough November 21, 2013, the Pegasus alumni had won 83 races and included three additional stakes winners. Another five runners have placed in stakes, including Blonde Fog, who finished second in the $500,000 Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet Stakes in 2012.

Increasing Your Horse’s Stamina With Leg Saver! The basic Leg Saver treatments are quite simple. 3 Treat the lung and heart ting points (located on the front coronet band) once, 3 days before a race or event. 3 Treatments are for one hour each. 3 Treatments should be done separately, one after the other. 3 It will take 2 hours to complete both. 3 The following day the horse should be walked for ½ hour to one hour. 3 The morning of the race the lungs should be treated for ½ hour as early as possible (about 8 am). Do not treat the heart. 3 This will increase performance about 4 to 8 lengths, depending on the horse. 3 Always check on the shoulders, hocks, poll & whirlbone to make sure the horse is ready for optimal performance. 3 Always treat the hocks if there is any heat in them at all. A number of trainers have been experimenting with the amount of exercise needed to keep the horse performing at its peak. Here is what we have found: 3 Horses that have their training reduced the week before the treatment are significantly improved over horses that are kept at their regular degree of exercise. They win a lot more money. 3 Reducing the exercise program the week before the treatment produces a much fitter horse. Results show about 80% wins & seconds—mostly wins (rider error caused some of the second place finishes). 3 These treatments reduce stress and strain on the horse’s body (hooves, ankles, tendons, ligaments, knees, hocks and other areas of stress). 3 Protocol for young race horses – treat their heart and lungs once every 2 weeks. This builds stronger horses with tremendous stamina. This will not make them run faster it just makes them finish stronger. This new protocol will give you the best results in your performance horse. Having more stamina down the stretch run results in more wins! Try it with one horse and see the results.

I’m reluctant to tell a world-class trainer what to do but this protocol really generates superior results!

There is no denying the power, grace and versatility of the Thoroughbred horse. Combining tremendous athleticism with so much heart, it should be no wonder that so many of these horses built for sport go on to do very well in their careers after racing. Results from the 2013 horse show season demonstrate the quality of the horses bred and raced here in BC and seeing homegrown talent succeed anywhere ought to delight horsemen and fans alike. Take Butch

Goertzen’s BC Derby winner Krazy Koffee, retired from racing in 2010 and sent to dressage Olympian Leslie Reid for a sport horse career makeover. With a solid foundation in dressage instilled by Reid’s student Chelsea Froese through 2011, Koffee changed course with new owner and Three-Day Event rider Robin Zimmer in early 2012. Competing in his

new discipline, Krazy Koffee again came up an impressive winner in 2013. Three-Day Eventing (also known as Horse Trials) tests horse and rider combinations in dressage, cross-country jumping and stadium/show jumping. Who better to take up such an intense hobby in his “retirement” than a multiple stakes-winning son of Regal Intention? Koffee absolutely

levelled the rest of the field in the regular Entry division at the Island 22 Event held over the Labour Day weekend in Chilliwack. With his stellar 29.3 dressage score, he showed his great capacity for finesse and backed that performance by demonstrating the athletic prowess required to go clear in both jumping phases. Says Zimmer of her mount “He is a wonderful,

kind horse with a heart of gold, I absolutely

love him.”Hastings was very

well-represented in this division on the day. Second place went to a well-known face on the backstretch, Maciej Rotecki, aboard the Ditloff’s homebred Free Capitalist. Fourth went to the multiple stakes placed Mucho Verde from the Brian O’Connell barn, a recent purchase by rider Nicole Leuthardt. Also in the top ten finishers was Willie Katchem in eighth under his New Stride adopter, Sarah Clarke. A hardknocking fan (and surely, announcer) favourite with 41 starts on his record, Willie clearly keeps on trying in his new job. This division is only the beginning for all of these horses and next season anything can happen.Another up-and-

comer in eventing is Guilded In Silver, a 2007 grey son of Amaruk who competes under the name On Cue. Owned and

ridden by Glynis Schultz of Brentwood Bay, ‘Q’ came out swinging this season with wins in the Novice division at the Whidbey Island Horse Trials in July and in the Pre-Training Division at the MREC Mary Swanson Horse Trials in October. Expect more from this team in 2014.Another very well-

seasoned Hastings boy also did the home team proud in a different arena this year. Henry and Mary Miller’s El Nino Mi Amor, who found his way to 16 year-old Ashley Desautels of Maple Ridge in 2010 after 56 starts on the track and

some time in limbo, won the BCLM Pony Club 2’6” Novice Jumper Championship and also scored Reserve Champion in the 2’ 9” Hunter Division.‘Abe’, as he’s known on the farm, is just a year younger than his rider and both were novices at jumping when they met in 2010. The pair also

completed their first Novice Three-Day Event last season. “Abe decided that he was going to run and there was no way that I was slowing him down. An elimination in stadium on the third day, but the blame for that one goes to me. I

got the clear cross country that I wanted, so all in all a good weekend,” says Desautels of their performance in the jumping phases.Apparently El Nino

Mi Amor and his cohorts in the ribbons last year also subscribe to the ‘once an athlete, always an athlete’ philosophy and their zest and fitness for the task really personify the greatness in BC bred horses. Good on them all and let’s go along and enjoy the ride. Anything can happen.

Editor’s note: Joining Horse Racing BC this month is Marcy Emery, a past President of New Stride Thoroughbred Adoption Society and active Thoroughbred and horse racing enthusiast. Marcy’s focus in these pages will be on racehorse aftercare and women in racing.

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) announced that Surrey’s New Stride Thoroughbred Adoption Society is now an accredited aftercare facility, providing ongoing care for retired Thoroughbred racehorses. New Stride is only of one two accredited facilities in Canada. The non-profit society has strict “adoption” criteria, and volunteers work hard to find new homes that best suit their horses. “New Stride has helped find new homes for 120 former Thoroughbred racehorses since 2002,” said Bill Randall, President of the New Stride Thoroughbred Adoption Society. “Thanks to our donors and volunteers, New Stride has helped these racehorses enjoy happy second careers.” The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) facilities represent a cross-section of rescue, retirement, retraining and adoption programs located across the United States as well as two in Canada. Following a detailed application process and careful onsite examinations by TAA inspectors and independent veterinarians, each of these facilities was judged to have met or exceeded the TAA Code of Standards in the areas of operations, educa-tion, horse care management, facility standards and services, and adoption policies and protocols.
