A ‘RIVER’ OF INSPIRATION

One afternoon, I was driving back on the Sitra Causeway, after a business meeting that went horribly wrong. I was terribly depressed and completely dejected. The snail-paced traffic on the causeway was making me even more distressed.

And playing on my car stereo was The Hits of Garth Brooks who, by the way, is my second favourite country music singer, after Kenny Rogers.

Anyway, Garth Brooks’ hit single called “The River” started playing. And, all of sudden, I found myself paying attention to the music and to the wonderful and inspiring lyrics which I had simply overlooked earlier.

And very soon I felt rejuvenated. The song revitalised me. The words reenergized me. I began to see that my problem is temporary. And that the problem won’t be a problem for long. That it can definitely be overcome. And soon I wasn’t feeling the blues anymore.

At that time, and in that moment, it really was my song of inspiration. The River of inspiration

I must have crossed over my gloominess, and I must have also crossed over the causeway, around the same time.

The song’s meaning is that each of us is like a boat/vessel - in the river of our life/dream which keeps on changing as it flows. With varying currents, and powerful twists and turns, you cannot always keep your vessel on the path you want. But you can – and you should – try and keep on sailing, despite the problems.

He meant that life is a constant struggle. But we must not give up. We must keep on sailing our vessels, until we reach the other side, or until the river runs dry!

The song also talks about - how we must not

postpone important things and get into trouble, how we must not stay satisfied, and particularly, how we must be taking risks sometimes.

Too many times we stand aside And let the waters slip away ‘Til what we put off ‘til tomorrow It has now become today So don’t you sit upon the shoreline And say you’re satisfied Choose to chance the rapids And dare to dance that tide

I loved those two lines, where he says ‘choose to chance the rapids, dare to dance the tide’ which somehow epitomize the risk-taking ability of individuals.

We also know that Life’s tough, says this song, The River. We must sail our vessel through rough waters of troubles and trails; of pitfalls and problems.

There’s bound to be rough waters And I know I’ll take some falls With the good God as my captain I can make it through them all And I will sail my vessel ‘Til the river runs dry Like a bird upon the wind These waters are my sky I’ll never reach my destination If I never try So I will sail my vessel ‘Til the river runs dry

Sailing on life’s river, my dear fellow travellers, I think we must know what’s important - to focus on destination, to chance the surging rapids, to face the rough waters, to keep up the balance, and to keep on sailing.

Yes. Keep on sailing till we reach our destination, or our goals.

and we also met many former Manama Toastmasters and Bahrain Toastmasters who are now living in the UAE, attending UAE Toastmasters Clubs.

Also present were many others from other Toastmasters clubs in Bahrain such as from NSS, Alba, Bapco, GPIC, Batelco, Bahrain, YMCA, Angels, KCA, Tylos etc.

Our plane back to Bahrain was almost filled with only Toastmasters! And we had a good time onboard.

Cheers to Toastmasters from Bahrain!!

TM Zakaria gave a very good performance in the RUN-OFF Humorous Speech Contest held on Thursday prior to the actual conference which began on Friday morning. The competition being very intense, somehow TM Zakaria was unable to get a place in the FINALS. But a great job TM Zakaria! We are all proud of you for being among the District Finalists!! Its not an easy task to reach there! Ladies and Gentlemen, raise your glasses. Cheers to TM Zakaria!

In this Humourous Speech contest, Two Saudi Toastmasters took the First and Second Places, But TM Mohammed Isa, from Bahrain Toastmasters

•••••••

Club, of Division K won the Third Place. Cheers to TM Mohammed Isa, from Bahrain!

In the International Speech Contest, from Division C, Jiju Varghese did a great job, but was unable to convince the judges about his good performance. In the Table Topics Contest, from Division C, Nalini Muralidharan also spoke well, but I suspect she lost out on time. Cheers to TM Jiju and to TM Nalini!

Having seen DTAC events for almost 7 years now, I must say that the quality of contests is really improving.

The workshops, by World Champions, Ed Tate and Darren La Croix, were also very useful

In the Gala Dinner Night, nice Entertainment of Dance and Music accompanied by delicious Food.

OTHER VERY IMPORTANT NEWSManama Toastmasters was given Special Recognition for being among only two clubs to achieve10 DCP Points before December. Cheers to those who made it possible, the team of our Immediate Past President, TM Isaac Matthew!!!

Do you realize that the only time in our lives

when we like to get old is when we’re kids? If you’re less than 10 years old, you’re so excited about aging that you think in fractions.

“How old are you?” “I’m four and a half!” You’re never thirty-six and a half. You’re four and a half, going on five! That’s the key.

You get into your teens, now they can’t hold you back. You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead.

“How old are you?” “I’m gonna be 16!” You could be 13, but hey, you’re gonna be 16! And then the greatest day of your life .. . You become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony YOU BECOME 21. YESSSS!!!

But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk! He TURNED; we had to throw him out. There’s no fun now, you’re Just a sour-dumpling. What’s

wrong? What’s changed?

You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you’re PUSHING 40. Whoa! Put on the brakes, it’s all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone.

But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn’t think you would!

So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60.

You’ve built up so much speed that youHIT 70! After that it’s a day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday!

You get into your 80’s and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30 ; you REACH bedtime. And it doesn’t end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; “I Was JUST92.”

Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. “I’m 100 and a half!”

May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!

HOW TO STAY YOUNG

Throw out n o n e s s e n t i a l n u m b e r s . T h i s includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay “them.”

Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.” And the devil’s name is Alzheimer’s.

Enjoy the simple things.

Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE

while you are alive.

Surround yourself with what you love, whether it’s family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

Don’t take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is..

Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Money has no memory. Experience has.You will never know what the

total cost of your education was, but for a lifetime you will recall and relive the memories of schools and colleges. Few years from now, you will forget the amount you paid to settle the hospitalization bill, but will ever cherish having saved your mother’s life or the life you get to live with the just born. You won’t remember the cost of your honeymoon, but to the last breath remember the experiences of the bliss of togetherness. Money has no memory. Experience has.

Good times and bad times, times of prosperity and times of poverty, times when the future looked so secure and times when you didn’t know from where the tomorrow will come… life has been in one way or the other a roller-coaster ride for everyone. Beyond all that abundance and beyond all that deprivation, what remains is the memory of experiences.

Sometimes the wallet was full… s! ometimes even the pocket was empty. There was enough and you still had reasons to frown. There wasn’t enough and you still had reasons to smile. Today, you can look back with tears of gratitude for all the times you had laughed together, and also look back with a smile at all the times you cried alone..

All in all, life filled you with experiences to create a history of your own self, and you alone can remember them all.

The first time you balanced yourself on your cycle without support…

The first time she said “yes” and it was two years since you proposed…

The first cry… the first steps… the first word… the first kiss… all of your child…

The first gift you bought for your parents and the first gift your daughter gave you…

The first award… the first public appreciation… the first stage performance…

And the list is endless… Experiences, with timeless memory…

No denying that anything that’s material cost money, but the fact remains the cost of ! the experience will be forgotten, but the experience never. So, what if it’s economic recession? Let it be, but let there not be a recession to the quality of your life. You can still take your parents, if not on a pilgrimage, at least to the local temple. You can still play with your children, if not on an international holiday, at least in the

local park. It doesn’t cost money to lie down or to take a loved one onto your lap. Nice time to train the employees, create leadership availability and be ready for the wonderful times when they arrive. Aspects like your health, knowledge development and spiritual growth are not economy dependent.

Time will pass… economy will revive… currency will soon be in current…and in all this, lets don’t look back and realize that we did nothing but stayed in gloom. Recession can make you lose out on money.. Let it not make you lose out on experiences…

She & He

It is midnight.. And you can’t resist the urge and are feeling festive! what would you do?

I will get myself loaded “spiritually” ( word courtesy of TM Kishan Kumar) Call up my friends and go to a night joint.

Have you ever arranged a party where you were the MC? what did you do ? If not, imagine that you are assigned this task now by vP Pr….

Me and Party MC….. some mismatch ! Anyway I will conduct a lot of innovative games and performances related to the theme to have a nice time….. that is what parties are meant for, right uhhh..

1.

2.

Gopan R. Cebarco

Pamela BirungiIt is midnight.. And you can’t resist the urge and are feeling festive! what would you do?

Why resist the urge to do to something harmless? I cannot call myself a party animal and I do get boring sometimes, but once in a while I like spontaneity. There are moments when I get out of my shell and do things just because I feel like doing them at that particular moment, and in most cases it feels good when I surprise myself. Therefore if the urge is there, I will definitely reach for my phone, call my girlfriends and unless they have a pretty good reason, I would not take no for an answer. My friends would be a big factor in this situation because going to party alone, no way! Chances of the night turning out disastrous outweigh those of the night being a fun one.

Midnight! That time would not be a factor to consider at all; after all isn’t midnight the time great parties start?

Have you ever arranged a party where you were the MC? what did you do ? If not, imagine that you are assigned this task now by vP Pr….

Hmmmm, I haven’t been an MC before, so I can imagine the thousand butterflies that would pop-up in my stomach if I was assigned this task! However, whatever I do during the execution of this task would be dependent on a number of issues: for instance the theme of the party, what type of party, what kind of audience, time and so on. Regardless, there are a few basics that I think every MC should do, for example: having deep knowledge about the theme, because in every party there are guests who know nothing about the occasion and they need to know. Therefore, as an MC I would have to tell the guests what the occasion is about. Humor adds life to a party, therefore as the MC, throwing in a little bit of humor now and again is a good thing that gives guests a break from all the formal speeches.

Another thing for an MC to make a party good is to get the audience involved – asking the audience to participate is a great way to get ideas on what to say next because you can always build on their inputs and hence make conversations out of it.

Do you think you are a happy, lively and outgoing person? Why do you think so?

1.

2.

3.

Happy, lively and outgoing! – I believe these three states do not necessarily have to mix or exist at once for someone to experience them. Therefore, yes I think I’m very happy, lively? Not all the time and outgoing? No. Why do I think so? Well, the things that make me happy do not all the time make me lively or outgoing although sometimes they do. For example Wednesday is my day, I call it “me-day” whereby apart from work, I only spend time with myself, I never allow anyone to take that time from me; catching up on the little things that I have missed along the week. This always makes me happy but not lively.

In your opinion, which member in Manama Toastmasters Club almost always makes you feel happy about life?

This is a difficult one! One thing I have noticed, majority of toastmasters in this club are friendly people and even those of us who are not, try to be, so the environment is always warm. Nonetheless, there are the obvious ones to me; these include TM Osama, one can never fail to smile when they see him because he will always smile first. Dr. Khalid- radiates positive energy throughout the meetings and he is so colorful, so full of live. Then there is our president – when I first had him speak, I ignorantly asked myself what is he doing in a club of people who are just learning to speak? (That was before I learnt that Toastmasters is more than just speaking and that learning does not end). He is such an eloquent speaker, with always a positive and encouraging message every time he speaks. Then there is the calm and always composed Elizabeth – I think she represents peace. While Melissa and Alyaa always smile making life seem so easy. My list could go on and on, but like I said a number of members seem to be so happy about life and I think that is why am enjoying my time here so far.

How can we make every meeting in Manama Toastmasters Club a “carnival” in it’s spirit?

Maybe if we shift the meeting from a Saturday to a working day! I think this would enable more people to attend and the bigger the number, the higher the chances of fun meetings. Weekends are really difficult, in most cases I have had to stop making plans for Saturday because it requires me to be home early to be able to attend the meetings and I believe a number of people miss because they just cannot cancel their plans with family and friends.

Encouraging members to be more creative and think of interactive activities can also make the meeting fun for example; I personally had so much fun with the game TM Guraz introduced in one of the meetings this month – maybe we can replace the word “joke Session” with “fun session” so that assignees of this task do not limit themselves to looking for jokes as the only viable thing to present but rather anything that is considered fun but within our conditions of no SRP.

4.

5.

Do you think you are a happy, lively and outgoing person? Why do you think so?

I thought so until I noticed that whenever I join a group in a party everybody slowly leaves.

In your opinion, which member in Manama Toastmasters Club almost always makes you feel happy about life?

There are many members in MTM who radiate energy, people who are always cheerful and positive about things. when you see them you almost imbibe that spirit. The first names that comes to mind are TM Mahmood, TM Farhan…..

How can we make every meeting in Manama Toastmasters Club a “carnival” in it’s spirit?

One way is to involve some competition among the members by forming groups or teams and having games or educational sessions with points. Like which team had the least ah’s or which team used most the word of the day, best speaker, best commentator etc..

We all want something. We are all looking for something. And, as

time passes, the needs and wants change according to what station we are in our lives. This was the theme of Saturday’s meeting (16th May, 2009) when I was the MC for the day.

A few questions to pause, think and reflect. This is an exercise and so I want you to find a place where you can have quiet time.

Now, write down what you wanted when you were 10 years old. Remember your life then. Your family, your friends, your school and all the exciting things you were doing then.

Then, write the things you wanted when you graduated. The feeling of accomplishment, the thrill of being out in the real world and to start doing things you wanted to do.

Now, write down the thing you want today. From financial security to health coverage to home to a car to a vacation.

Take a break and think of this scenario. You have a limited time left on this planet. Remember, it is only a hypothetical. I do not wish anyone reading this getting a disease of any kind. I want everyone to have a full life. Due to limited life, what will your wants be?

Do write them down and see what the changes every station brought with it.

And, see or do the things you WANT to do in this blessed life you have.

Also, think of what our club wants?

We want better communicators! We want better listeners! We want champions! We want people to fulfill their dreams!

And, as TM Mohammed Mahmood always says - keep smiling!

I was delighted to receive the Leadership Excellence certificate for the High Performance Leadership program. It was awarded in recognition of my contribution to the Education and Training field for the year 2008/9.

In my capacity as Asst Gov of Education and Training for District 79 Div C I had arranged for twelve workshops and educational programs and they were conducted in a span of seven months. The training was related to Evaluation, Judging, Chief Judging, Leadership, Marketing, Public Relations, Event Management, Officers Training, the Right way to Write and Fostering Clubs’ Performance.

This was not possible were it not for the co-operation and support of all the TMs who contributed as presenters and

as attentive participants, the Division’s ever-willing and helpful Ex Com and over and above all this the dynamic Div Gov TM Khalid Al Quod whose encouragement and support was there right through the whole term.

All this culminated in the successful and high-profile BTACC 2009 held on 3 April 2009 and which most of you had attended.

I enjoyed what I did the whole year round as it was my way of paying back...in a small way... to the Toastmasters movement from which I have

gained so much ...the skills related to Communication and Leadership and the amazing network of Toastmasters.

Would I do it again ?! ...you can bet your last Dinar I would !!

WAWA! No no.. WAWA?… You are not getting it.. W-A-W-A? Okay, imagine life without WAWA, how it would be look like? Still you have difficulties visualizing that? Never mind.

That was a little chitchat I had with myself after our decision to have a social gathering with all our family members and friends in Manama Toastmasters Club. I knew from a couple of members that MTM used to meet casually and socially more often before, in a very harmonic social get-together format, but somehow this tradition had begun to fadeout. I took that %100 personally, and I think we as new members should continue this ritual, if just for one reason; it should be for “breaking” the routine of our formal meetings.

You see, we have a regular formal meeting every week, and I believe that by itself might not give people enough resources to express themselves accurately or even be really themselves, while there are factors restraining to act freely. Don’t get me wrong, I like the framework in which our Toastmasters meetings are being held, but don’t you think we still need to wear a WAWA hat every now and then, to resurrect some of our childhood skills, missing talents or even to sharpen our socializing-on-the-go proficiency? Who knew how brilliant Mellisa is while playing guitar for instance? Maybe she needed that chance, to exercise her hobby in front of real audience who has the capability of evaluating constructively, didn’t she?

The WAWA show was a typical team working experience where everyone put his/her minds and muscles to work, for nothing but to enrich your experience. I was delighted (and

very much lucky) to lead a team of totally charismatic individuals that I personally learnt from each one of them. Come on members; don’t hesitate in the future to arrange such event. The learning outcomes are just worth all this efforts. I always labeled myself as an introvert kind of person. But guess what? Others evaluations of me proved quite the opposite: I am more of an extravert person who thrives while working in groups. The point is, don’t be judgmental my friend and say you are a such and such person. Put yourself under the fire, and gets your hand on the job, give yourself some time, and I am sure you will find wonders about what you can do and achieve!

We brought WAWA so it can live with us, for ever! We have all contributed so WAWA could be the legitimate son of Manama Toastmasters. Let us all keep that spirit, and let us all be proud that We Are Wholly Amazing!

Happy reading WAWA!

Yours,Hussain SayedEditorVP PR – Manama Toastmasters
