UNC Research in Education and Practice Symposium

On May 20-21, all ten PGY1 residents and 1 PGY2 resident traveled to UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in Chapel Hill, NC for the Sixth Annual Research in Education and Practice Symposium. The residents presented their research projects in a 12-minute platform presentation style format. It was an engaging opportunity for the residents as they were able to receive high-level feedback on their research as well as network with fellow pharmacy practitioners across the region. This was the fifth

consecutive year that UVA has had PGY1 pharmacy residents participate in this event.

Networking Among Residency Programs

There is always so much to be learned from collaborating with others! We hosted visits from three different pharmacy residency programs this year. The University of Florida and Duke University Hospital both visited Charlottesville in the fall, and Wake Forest PGY1 pharmacy residents in May. Hoo’s New? The Residency Class of 2019-2020

Health) Medical Mission Trip with Faith in Practice: A New Tradition?

Two PGY2 residents, Ally (PP 18, ID 19) and Michelle (PP 18, CC 19), traveled for the second year in a row with Bethany Delk (PP 06, CC 07) on a medical mission trip to Guatemala with Faith in Practice. This year was Bethany’s 14th year volunteering with Faith in Practice—a tradition she started when she was still a resident at UVA! She was able to bring current residents with her for the first time last year for the 2018 trip, when Kristi Higgins (PP 18, Peds 19) and Tabitha Bice (PP 18) also joined her with Michelle and Ally. During the 2019 trip, they traveled to two different villages in El Progreso, Sanarate and San Cristobal Acasaguastian , to set up medical clinics. During the 4 days of clinic, they helped provide medical care and medications to over 2,000 patients, many of whom would not otherwise have access to care. They witnessed

patient struggles that are not normally faced in the US and grew appreciation for common commodities that impact safe medication use, such as electricity, clean water, and safe living conditions. The residents learned to provide care with limited resources, lack of future monitoring and follow-up, and a language barrier. They are very grateful that UVA allowed them to attend this trip as an “approved residency learning experience” and would like to thank Bethany and Michelle McCarthy for their hard work in making this trip possible. They are eager to return for future medical mission trips with Faith in Practice to continue to serve the Guatemalan people! PGY1 and PGY2 residents are interested in joining the Delk Village Team in Guatemala for the 2020 mission trip. Board Certification

Kara (Parsons) Thornton (DI 15) earned certification as a Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP)

Kelly Rogers (PP 95) has earned her Cardiology Board certification (BCCP).

James Coons (PP 02) has earned his Cardiology Board certification (BCCP).

Matt Morrisette (CC 16) has earned his Critical Care Pharmacy Board Certification (BCCCP).
