HONEY BROOK FOOD PANTRY OUTREACH INCREASES

The Honey Brook Food Pantry is entering its third year of service to the community. Since its inception, the organizationhas touched over 700 families, providing a 4-5 day supply of supplemental food for residents of the Twin Valley School

District in the Honey Brook area. Those families qualify (income) at 150% of the poverty limit. In 2015, 355 families visitedthe pantry an average of 8 times and received 135,000 lbs. of food. In December alone, nearly 800 people sought help. Fifty-five new families were registered during the 4th quarter of the year.

Food distributions take place from 10 am-1:30 pm on the second Wednesday of the monthand 4:00 pm- 6:30 pm on the 4th Wednesday of the month at Good Food Warehouse, 5064Horseshoe Pike, Door #8, in Honey Brook.

Although there are many factors contributing to the continued need for food support, a 23%decline in median income since 2009 is certainly an important one. Honey Brook is one of theleading wage declining suburbs, according to the American Community Survey (ACS).

Through the contributions of a coalition of local employers, the pantry began a supplementalfood program for 22 families from the Twin Valley Elementary Center and the Honey BrookElementary Center who are in greatest need. These 46 children are receiving bi-weekly healthyfoods packed for them on Fridays to support them over the weekend.

A new program to encourage recipients to grow fresh vegetables will also begin this spring.

The pantry is staffed exclusively by volunteers and supported by a volunteer Board of Directors.Besides volunteering, the community is encouraged to donate healthy foods and monetarycontributions. The preference for monetary donations is twofold….public sources of meat, eggs, cheese, and milk are virtually non-existent AND the organization has negotiated some verycompetitive discounts with local retailers who support the efforts of healthy food purchases.

Please check out the website www.honeybrookfoodpantry.org and the Honey Brook Food PantryFacebook page to learn more about sponsorship and how to provide assistance, which is so critical to sustainfood levels that match the continual need.

BOROUGH PARK OFFERS FUN-FILLED FAMILY ACTIVITIES

Honey Borough Park and Recreation Committee has scheduled another season of musical concerts and bocce tournaments tobring families together for summer outdoor fun.

The 2016 FREE Concert in the Park series will kick off on Sunday, June 5, at 5:30 pmwhen Mason Porter takes the stage in Honey Brook Borough Park. Mason Porter play a styleof American music that is unique in many ways, hitting folk-bluegrass buttons while tossingin a hint of country rock energy and power for good measure. They have the ability tocombine the earthy, Appalachian instruments with a more edgy urban appeal. With adanceable vibe, an energetic live show and fresh approach to improvisation, Mason Porterand its growing community finds itself at home wherever they go. Mason Porter has gracedthe main stage at the Philadelphia Folk Festival and shared the stage with acts such as Ralph

Stanley, Peter Rowan, Charlie Daniels and the New Riders of the Purple Sage. Check out the band’s website at www.masonporter.com.

The second concert of the season will host Down by the Glenside who will perform on Sunday,August 7, at 5:30 pm. Down by the Glenside began as a group of friends informally playing atparties or around campfires at Civil War reenactments. They humbly pay homage to the generationsof Irish that contributed to building this and many other great nations in the spirit of the ClancyBrothers, Tommy Makem, Luke Kelly and the Wolf Tones. Down by the Glenside shares thetraditional music of Ireland, exquisitely combining the sounds of the fiddle, guitar, banjo, bouzouki, mandolin, tin whistle and bodhran with beautiful vocal harmonies. Check out the band’s website a twww.downbytheglenside.com.

The final concert of the season is scheduled for Sunday, September 11, at 5:00 pm when 74/75 shares theirextensive repertoire of classic and contemporary rock covers as well as original tunes. For many years, thisfive piece band has played private parties, benefit concerts and festivals, including the Brandywine HospitalStrawberry Festival and Caln Days. The members of 74/75 are all local musicians and look forward toperforming for a hometown crowd.

Concert goers are encouraged to bring chairs, blankets, and picnics. The park has a large covered pavilion with picnic tables.
