The annual Christmas concert and din-ner to honor our district’s senior citizens is scheduled for Tuesday, December 12th. The concert is presented by the high school band and choir and will start at 4:00 p.m. in the GVCS auditorium. The dinner will take place in the school caf-eteria immediately following the concert. School guides will also be available at the front doors to assist our special guests in getting to the auditorium and cafeteria. Visitors are asked not to arrive before 3:30 p.m. so that parking space is available, once staff members leave. We also request that only senior citizens living in the GVCS district attend.

To make reservations, please call Penny Miller at 268-7909 by December 1st. We look forward to sharing this eve-ning with you.

GVCS received a notification letter from the Western New York STEM with the following information:

“It is our pleasure to notify you that your application for a WNY STEM School on the Move 2017 has received ratings that indicate sufficient self-reported evi-dence for recognition at the Accomplished Level. WNY STEM Hub and its judging team use criteria from the NYS STEM Learning Rubric in order to make this determination. Congratulations on your efforts in assuring STEM learning at your school and for your initiative at achieving this distinction. In addition, your district application for Sustainability Education garnered an Honorable Mention Certifi-cate. Your school will be recognized with your awards at the annual Recognition Dinner on October 12, hosted by Roswell Park. Your award is sponsored by Sie-mens.”

Brian Edmister said, “I am proud that we were able to change curriculum to meet student needs and receive this award.” Congratulations to all for this achievement!

Our very own Dr. Brian Schmitt (pictured above) was a speaker at the New York State School Boards Association Convention held in Lake Placid on October 12-14. Dr. Schmitt gave a presentation on the GVCS Pre-K3 & Pre-K4 programs at GVCS. He gave a power point presenta-tion and reviewed the steps necessary to start the grant funded program.

Students Hunter Brodman, Zach Deich-mann, Chase Robbins, and Gavin Hand (shown at right) also shared information about our Robojags team at the NYSSBA Conference.

Schools from all across New York came to their booth. The stu-dents were able to share their experiences and network with potential sponsors.

Central School Drama Club received a grant check for $1,400 from the Allegany Endow-ment Fund (which is managed by the Allegany County Area Foundation). The grant money will be used to help revitalize dramatic arts produc-tions at the Genesee Valley Central School. The GVCS drama program is designed to represent the “A” portion of the district's STEAM initiative. It will also further enhance and develop 21st Century Skills – collaboration, creativity, communication and critical thinking – across multiple grade levels.

The culminating products of the drama program will feature students, grades 7-12, participating in a collaborative arts production. It is envisioned that this project will bridge the Angelica and Belmont communities that comprise the district and strengthen the connection between not only our staff and students but also the school and the residents of district. Spring productions are being discussed during drama club meetings every Thursday after school in the room of Kim Douglas. Any student in grades 7-12 are welcome to attend!

Students in Mrs. Johnson’s Pre-K 3 built coconut trees with Ms. Malibu after reading the story, “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.” They worked hard to see how many letters they could get to the top of the coconut tree!

Alma MaterAs the years may come and then go by, we will always think of thee, and in our hearts forevermore, we will sing this melody:

(refrain) Proudly stands our banner strong and true, for the green and black and white, it forever stands for victory, and for hope and love and life. Forever shall our Alma Mater stand for Genesee, while ringing through the valley hills, of our pride and loyalty.

Third Grade Waterslide STEAM ActivityMrs. Cole’s third grade class designed, developed, built, and tested

waterslides as a STEAM activity on Day 2 of this school year. What a great start for the students! You can almost see their brains in high gear as they work on this deadline-sensitive classroom activity.

The men and women serving as Board of Education members are dedicated to children, learning, and community. They volunteer many hours of service to public education as they continually strive for improvement, excellence and progress in education. The members of the school boards are community leaders who provide an invaluable resource as local decision-makers, responding not only to the educational needs of the community, but also serving in the best interests of children and their future. Board members must complete courses for Board member-ship: Fiscal Oversight Fundamentals and Essentials of School Board Governance. Along with GVCS Board meetings, they also attend committee meetings, New York State School Boards Association meetings/conventions, Allegany County School Boards Association meetings and various school events.

We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the following School Board Members:

Dear Genesee Valley Community,

What a beautiful Fall season we have had at Genesee Valley CSD! This is my favorite time of year, as I love to hike, hunt and enjoy the change of seasons.

Autumn ends the first phase of the capital project. New features include a new roof, new asphalt in the parking lot and new tinting and security film in the cafeteria. The plans for the second phase are at the NYS Department of Education for final review. I am opti-mistic we will commence the next phase by the Summer of 2018. Please review some highlights of the next phase shown at left.

Voters authorized a capital outlay project last May. This project brings a new storage location for district office records retention, new dry storage and an expanded freezer for the cafeteria. This is the third year the district has provided free breakfast, lunch and snacks to all students. Each year we increased the number of meals served significantly, serving over 30,000 additional meals during last year alone. I am very proud of the outstanding work of our cafeteria staff in serving all students healthy and nutritious meals!

The Western New York STEM Hub recognized the GVCS STEAM program for a third year in a row. We were recognized at the “Accomplished” level and received an “Honorable Mention” in the inaugural category of Sustainability Education. Congratulations to the faculty, staff, administration and students for a job well done!

As Thanksgiving approaches, we have a great deal to be thank-ful for. I would like to share with you what I am thankful for as the Superintendent of GVCS:

• I am thankful for the outstanding students who come to school daily eager to learn. The energy they bring makes the building come alive!

• I am thankful for the dedicated teachers, teacher aides, teacher assistants, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, administrators, of-fice staff, custodians and cleaners who give so much to make GVCS a truly special place. I am very proud of the outstand-ing professionals who give so much of their time to support the students of our community.

• I am thankful to serve with a Board of Education who truly cares about what is best for students, staff and the community. They are committed to making GVCS a community focused district and the best school in the country.

• I am thankful for the parents, grandparents and volunteers who generously donate time and expertise to support the district.

I hope you enjoy the upcoming holiday season and look forward to seeing you at one of the many district concerts and events.

Sincerely,

Dr. Brian SchmittSuperintendent Genesee Valley CSD

Pumpkins, pumpkins all around! One of the best things about Fall is that there are pumpkins everywhere, making it easy to have a Pumpkin Science Exploration! Our Kinder-garten students used their 5 senses to explore the outsides as well as the insides of a pumpkin! With the help of our volunteer leaders, the students measured, predicted whether their pumpkin would sink or float and then cut open the pumpkins and counted the seeds! If you see any of our expert pumpkin scientists be sure to ask them what they learned about pumpkins!!

On Saturday, October 7th, the Class of 2017 Genesee Valley Central School Wall of Fame was inducted during a brunch ceremony held in the cafeteria. It was a great opportunity for old friends and athletes to reconnect and reminisce. Inducted were: Brianna Pre-sutti, GVCS Class of 2012; Logan Phillips, GVCS Class of 2012; Matt Trowbridge, Class of 2005; Bruce Voorhis, Angelica Central School Coach; and the 1973-1974 Angelica Boys’ Basketball Team. The team won the Section V Class D Basketball Championship. As the program reads, “This is certainly a memory that lasts a lifetime, and within a small community, everyone is a part of the victory and celebration.” A plaque will be placed in the trophy hallway at GVCS and each individual was given a plaque. Thank you to the family and friends who attended this event to recognize these deserving individuals.

The date for the GVCS Fall Sports Banquet has been changed to Thursday, November 2, at 6:00 pm. On Tuesday, September 26th staff and students wore purple to show support for Bolivar-Richburg student and athlete Heidi Stur-devant. Heidi has cancer and is in the middle of her treatments. She is a tough young lady with strength and willpower. Thanks to everyone at GV who showed “Hope for Heidi.”
