National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence - FRIDAY

This Friday is the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence and across the school this week, and every day, we embed anti-bullying strategies into our practice and school culture. This week in particular students will focus on the “Bullying. No Way! Take Action Everyday” message. The most effective way parents can support students dealing with bullying, is to be fully resourced, being across the resources, understanding the best ways parents can support and assist their child in response to and prevent of bullying. The website link below provides outstanding information and resources for parents, students, teachers and the wider community. Bullying prevention is everyone’s responsibility. Action Parents and carers are encouraged to access this resource and take the time to develop their understanding what bullying is, what the research says, how parents and carers can respond.

Meet the Teacher Night It was a great pleasure to host Open Classrooms, Parent Information Sessions and School expo at our annual Meet the Teacher Night last Tuesday. The variety of teacher led sessions is designed to offer parents’ choice about the information they wish to pursue. We pride ourselves on the variety of rich opportunities offered at our school that contribute to the educational success of our students. We hope that parents and carers feel informed, empowered and well-resourced as we partner with you in educating your child. Feedback from our community is a vital component to ensuring we continue to improve the event in the future. Please take the time to complete the three question survey via the link below. P&C Meeting next week You haven’t missed our first P&C meeting for 2019, the AGM and first meeting will be held next Monday the 18th of March at 7pm. There is always a lot happening at Homebush West PS and one of the best ways to find out about programs and plans is to join the P&C. Joining the P&C, hearing from the Principal, meeting other parents and having an opportunity to ask questions is an easy way to get involved in your children’s learning. Parental involvement in children’s learning is beneficial. Harvard University research* shows it leads to better educational, social, and emotional outcomes for children. In addition, Australian Research Alliance for Children & Youth (ARACY) research** demonstrates parental involvement contributes to overall student positive attainment, behaviour and attendance at school. Details Monday 18 MARCH 7pm in The Hub. Some members of the 2018 Executive Team will be in The Hub from 6:30 if you’d like to arrive a little early to have a cup of tea and meet some other parents before the meeting starts. Please bring $1 to join the P&C as a member so you can vote! * David R. Topor , Susan P. Keane , Terri L. Shelton & Susan D. Leadership Conference It was an amazing day at Sydney Olympic Park Quay Centre. Were we learned all about leadership qualities, and the main four character traits. Emily (one of the hosts) talked through what the core main traits were in an interesting manner. Instead of just saying the facts she showed us clips of movies and made us try to engage with them and realise what the characters traits were, we were told to tell someone else what we realised about it but instead of doing it with the person next us we had to do it with a person from another school. By doing this we were showing one of the leadership qualites, confidence with humility. All of the qualities were confidence and humility, others focused, reliability, and empathy. The hosts engaged everyone and made everyone learn how to become a better leader. They made us communicate with other schools and tell our opinions and what we thought about that topic. They gave us booklets to fill out information on what our opinions were and what the other schools opinions were for the task. There was a part when they made everyone laugh but still learn. That was when the loud noises came. They also made us use the four main core traits then and there they used scenarios for us to use our understanding of the four core traits. Overall, the 24 leaders who attended all had an amazing and insightful day. By Pravin & Sandeep Stage 2 Excursion – Billionaire Boy

Last Thursday Stage 2 ventured to the theatre at Parramatta to watch a live production of Billionaire Boy. This amazing play is based on the novel by David Williams. Billionaire Boy is about a young boy Joe who has everything he could ever want, including a golden underwater Ferrari and his very own cinema but what Joe really wants is a friend. The show was highly entertaining and it also conveyed some important messages about the value of friendship and family. We loved that the play included spectacular musical numbers and lots of laughs and we all thought it was highly entertaining. After the theatre, Stage 2 headed to the park for recess and games. All of Stage 2 agreed it was a fabulous day.

Stage 3 Excursion – Rouse Hill excursion As part of the Term One Integrated Unit, Stage 3 students attended an excursion to Rouse Hill House and Farm. During the day students engaged in two learning opportunities with educators. One session Colonial Eye, investigated the role of artists during the early colonial period and considered how they contributed to the development of the colony. In session two, students explored the former farm and examined a range of sources to learn about the expansion of NSW in the 19th century and investigated its impacts on the environment, the people of the Boorooberongal clan and the colonisers. They also examined displays and artefacts to investigate Indigenous land management, and farm structures and technologies as evidence of European farming practices and the challenges of irrigation. Our Excursion To Rouse Hill House and Farm! On Wednesday the 6th of March, 6/5CWS went to Rouse Hill House and Farm. As soon as we got there we ate some recess because the bus drive was about 45 minutes. Afterwards we were separated into groups of 15 to do rotations. 6/5C was split into two groups which went to either 6/5W or 6/5S. The groups in 6/5CS first did the art activities and learnt why artists were important during the colonisation. During that session, we were drawing (and then water colouring) landscapes, we drew a kookaburra and a summer house (gazebo). After that we had our lunch and played a little. The second session (for 6/5SC) was about information on aboriginal tools and what they were used for. Then we looked at the house that Richard Rouse had built and the servant section of the house. In the servant house, we looked at some important people and what they did. Richard’s house looked very grand and it was really dark, though it had some light. Afterwards we went back to the stairs and marked the roll. Then we went back onto the bus back to Homebush West, it was a very eventful day. Written by Lillian C and Chloe B

Dr Kristy Goodwin Seminar: Raising Your child in a Digital World Parents and carers are warmly invited to attend our seminar by Dr Kristy Goodwin on “Raising your Child in a Digital World”. Dr Kristy Goodwin, a digital parenting educator, author and researcher (& mum who also deals with her kids’ techno-tantrums), translates the latest research about how technology is shaping childhood into essential information for confused and concerned parents. Dr Kristy helps parents make informed decisions about how to best manage screen-time at home (so that it doesn’t always end in ‘scream time’)… and no she won’t suggest that you ban the iPad, or unplug the TV! Parents will understand the latest risks to kids’ online safety (including current cyber-safety threats, pornography exposure, introduction of phones and social media), as well as the health and learning implications of young kids (4-12 years) growing up in a world of screens. Kristy will share her simple formula to calculate healthy screen-time limits and will arm parents with a host of strategies and ideas to prevent techno-tantrums and to help kids develop healthy technology habits. Dr Kristy will explain how technology is impacting kids’ learning, sleep, social, language, play, physical skills and their vision, hearing and posture and will arm parents with practical strategies about how to best raise kids in a digital world. Parents will learn how to get the most out of their child’s screen-time so they can finally ditch the guilt and guesswork. Monday 1 April 5.30-7pm Homebush West PS Tickets $5 per person Essential Tips and Tricks for Parents It is ok for my child to use headphones?

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 1.1 billion teenagers and young adults are at risk of noise-induced hearing loss because of unsafe use of audio devices like smartphones, tablets and portable music players.

Safe hearing levels are below by 130 decibels (dB) yet most commercial headphones can reach 130bD. Whilst it’s often impossible to set a specific decibel level on audio players and mobile devices, you can set the maximum level by listening to the test sounds and adjust according to what feels comfortable for you as an adult.

Parent Tech Tip: Provide your child with ear-muff style headphones instead of ear buds. These help to block out some of the superfluous background noise so that they

can focus on what they’re listening to, as opposed to blasting the volume

Summer PSSA Coaches Junior Cricket – Ms Joseph Senior Cricket – Ms Pashley Junior and Girls and Boys Teeball – Ms Pene Senior boys and Girls Softball – Mr Penman Junior Cricket What a game! This week we played a great game against Five Dock who were gracious in defeat. We saw great improvement with our bowling, getting 6 wickets. During our batting innings we were able to protect our wicket and score runs off the bat, which allowed us to earn bonus points. This week also saw great communication between the batting pairs when running, showing great confidence in their calling. Well done boys and looking to seeing even more improvement next week. Keep up the good work and sportsmanship. The final score was 118.5 to 75.5. Ms Joseph Senior Cricket Today Homebush went up against Five Dock at a hot Timbrell Park. The game began with Homebush West facing the bowlers head on! The bowling from the opposition was unpredictable but thankfully our defensive batting style protected our wickets, only conceding 2 in total. Jay and Zack were powerful in their batting, both hitting solid 4s! When it was our turn to bowl the pressure was on to minimise errors. Pravin opened delivering a maiden to ease our way into the innings. Our first of 5 wickets came from our star bowler Milind, striking the wicket in his first bowl! This was followed by two great catches from Chinmayee and Garry! Jay took a wise, safe option when physically carrying the cherry to the wicket for a run out plus he stole another during his first bowl of his second over! Fantastic and close game today - a well earned win on all fronts! Looking forward to next week! Player of the match goes to Garry for his sportsmanship and incredible catch! Coach Pashley

Junior Girls and Boys Teeball Last Friday the Junior Teeball Teams had a Bye game at Mason Reserve, as Enfield PS doesn’t have any junior teams. We used the time the further develop our knowledge and understanding of the game, improve our skills and techniques and learn from and with each other! I am so extremely proud of the junior girls and boys!!! They continue to impress me each and every week with their enthusiasm, willingness to learn and their level of improvement! Some highlights of our extended training session today include:

Thushan’s powerful hit that saw the ball fly right over our pitcher and short-stop, landing right in Sadhvika’s mit! Although unlucky, absolutely amazing technique from both students - wow!

Sudharshana & Georgina’s improved understanding of the game. With great communication and quick decision-making on the field, the girls were able to add runs to the scoreboard - well done!

Nanda’s on field communication skills and leadership, reminding his team to aim and hit the ball straight into the outfield between second and third base - fantastic!

Derek’s precision on second base which saw two consecutive outs - impressive!

Jinda’s leadership with Jun-Xi’s support on and off the field. With their experience in Baseball outside of school, the boys continued to help lead their team and improve their team’s skillset - amazing!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - I am so extremely proud of my junior girls and boys! They continue to amaze me each week and I feel nothing but positivity for the season ahead. Bring it on! Coach Pene Senior Girls Softball Week 3 of PSSA took place at Mason Park last Friday against Enfield PS. Our training went smoothly by experimenting with new rules and plays for our season. The girls took the field with heads up high sadly losing the toss and taking up the batting off first. Jocelin and Nethrra took on some challenging pitches but made it safely to the base. Our fielding was sublime today! With quality pitching and catching from both Gamya and Akshyaa. The whole team managed to keep the opposition to zero runs with two out. Sadly there was a minimal margin this week only 2 runs in it, the girls should be so proud of their effort and performance. They are sizing up to be a quality team. Couldn’t be proud of the way you represent Homebush West girls. Mr Penman Senior Boys Softball Our third week of PSSA and we took on Enfield PS at Mason Park. Our training was working on their fielding and learning new skills and plays. The boys were led by Rehan who opened the pitching and then later put his body on the line to stop the ball. There were key highlights from Adhrit performing as a quality pitcher and batter. Iohannes was complimented by the opposition’s coach for having some great skills. There was an excellent double play made by James, Iohannes and Ian (who’s glove had a magnet in it this week as he took some great outs at first). The boys are improving every week, sadly not taking the win this week but once again shrinking the margin and getting runs on the board. Well done boys on continually improving and demonstrating what a good Homebush West Star is. Keep it up boys! Mr Penman

Carevan Sun Smiles Program Studies show by the age of 6, half of Australian school children will have tooth decay.

Decay can be painful, affecting a child’s ability to concentrate and learn at school. Home life can also be affected with children not being able to chew foods properly or sleep well.

One of the best ways to prevent tooth decay is to provide your child with a Colgate fluoride varnish treatment. Fluoride varnish can repair the early stages of tooth decay and prevent new decay from starting by strengthening the tooth’s enamel surface. Applying fluoride varnish takes less than two minutes. The varnish is painted on the teeth with a small, soft disposable brush.

Your consent is needed before we can enrol your child in the Sun Smiles program and apply fluoride varnish to your child’s teeth. Please fill out the Sun Smiles consent form and return to the school.

Dr Kristy Goodwin is a leading digital parenting educator, researcher, author & former teacher (and mum who deals with her kids’ techno-tantrums). She translates the latest research into essential and digestible information and tips, for parents, educators and health professionals so that they can safely navigate the digital terrain... without suggesting that kids be ‘digitally amputated’! Kristy has spoken at and consulted with schools throughout Australia and Asia, she’s regularly called on by the media for her expert opinion.

Parents will understand the latest risks to kids’ online safety (including current cyber-safety threats, pornography exposure, introduction of phones and social media), as well as the health and learning

implications of young kids (4-12 years) growing up in a world of screens.
