WEEK OF

January 17, 2016

The Women’ Book Discussion Group will meet on Sunday, January 24th, at 9:15 a.m. in the downstairs Conference Room. This month’s book is “Convictions: How I Learned What Really Matters” by Marcus J. Borg. The book is a manifesto for all progressive Catholics who seek the

best path to follow Jesus today. All women are welcome.

From the liturgy team

Having the only nighttime Sunday Mass in Gaines-ville, St. Augustine’s liturgy team decided in August to transform the 7:30pm Mass into a more unique and solemn celebration. If you attend a 7:30pm Mass, you will notice dimmer lighting, candles throughout the church, and in-cense. The atmosphere gives the sense of a more sacred space in a nighttime worship. But why?

The traditions of candles and incense come from our Jewish roots. Burning incense is prescribed in Exodus to bless, sanctify and venerate. In ancient times incense was an expensive commodity; therefore it found a home in religious worship to honor God with precious gifts. The Roman Missal reminds us that the smoke signifies “the Church’s offering and our prayers rising in the sight of God.”

We invite you to join us for 7:30pm Mass to experi-ence this solemn nighttime worship.

Community Forum on Islamophobia

6 p.m., Wednesday, January 20,

at the Thomas Center

Concerns about resistance toward receiving Syrian refugees, increased anti-Muslim rhetoric, and grow-ing attitudes of intolerance will be addressed, and ways to make Gainesville a welcoming community identified. The event will facilitate discussion on Islam and inter-faith relations, the refugee crisis, and the role of me-dia in shaping public perception of these issues. It will provide opportunities to get involved in efforts in our community to support Syrian refugees. Keynote speaker is Dr. Hatem Bazian, Ph.D., Philoso-phy and Islamic Studies, UC Berkeley. Other speakers include Ester Romeyn, Iman Zawahry, Terje Ostebo, Justin Baba (Arab Students Association)--all from UF, and Hassan Shibly (CAIR). Sponsored by Daughters of Abraham, UF Center for Global Islamic Studies, Welcoming Gainesville, Inc., and Gainesville Interfaith Alliance for Immigrant Jus-tice.

Pre-registration required. Free and open to the pub-lic. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1HWcb4TRRPVFBoMXUCGU75flIoLPA_XcsDH5FS2W1NNY/viewform?usp=send_form

STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Last weekend at most of the masses lay parishioners gave personal witness talks on stewardship. This weekend, you will find our Stewardship Renewal brochures in the pews. If you have taken one of the brochures home in the past and haven’t recycled it, then please look at it anew, complete it, and turn it in to the par-ish. Even if you are only committing time, it’s better to make that commitment with the parish rather than keeping it secret to yourself.

Stewardship of time is your personal time with God: Attend Mass every Sunday and on holy days, at-tend a weekday mass at least once a week, pray 15 minutes a day, pray with others, read the Bible for at least one hour a week, pray the Rosary at least once a week, go to confession every other month, go on a retreat, at-tend a Bible study, attend Nightfever, attend Mass on the Grass, spend 1 hour a week in Adoration, read a book on spiritual growth. There’s no excuse for not doing some of this.

Stewardship of talent is doing something for the church or others in need. Sign on for a liturgical minis-try, various service ministries sponsored by the parish, various groups in the parish, numerous Catholic groups in the community, or Student Center groups and ministries. There are links to most of these opportunities on the St. A web page (www.catholicgators.org). Look under the Ministries heading (see numerous subheadings), Students heading (see Getting Involved and Ministries). There is contact information for getting involved.

For stewardship of treasure, please see our e-giving web page by clicking on Donate at the top of the parish web page. The most efficient and effective way is to then click on the large blue “Donate” button on that page, which takes you to our new e-giving.org page that makes it easy to set up regular monthly donations, holy days, and special collections. There is no minimal donation. Supporting the parish is not a fee for service, like watching a movie. It should be regular support, whether you are present at mass or not. The e-giving page is an easy way to do this. Of course, cash and checks in the offertory are still welcome!

It’s the New Year! It’s time to plan ahead and make commitments for self-improvement. Believe it or not, Lent is only four weeks way. Please use our stewardship drive as an opportunity to enrich your commit-ment to God, his Church, and his people.

Our theme, “One Faith, One Fami-ly” invites each of us to be a part of this appeal through our pray-ers and gifts. Your contributions to your parish and our Diocese serve as a sign of gratitude not only for God’s answers to pray-ers, but also as a sign of recognition that all that we are, and all that we have, are gifts given to us by God. In this year of Mercy, consider how you can share your gifts in mercy with others. Thank you in advance for your support.
