LO: To read fluently with expression
LO: To Skim and Scan a text
Skimming is reading a text quickly to get a general idea of meaning. It can be
contrasted with scanning, which is reading in order to find specific information.
Read Chapter 1 and 2 of Pig Heart Boy
https://www.bookscool.com/en/Pig-Heart-Boy-912416/1
Practise reading Chapter 1 a few times out loud so you are fluent and using
expression to make it sound more exciting and dramatic - think about the reading
different parts at different speeds.
Find the following words in the text as quickly as you can: roaring, breath,
thunderous, emerge, broadened, feeble, participant.
For the words roaring, breath and thunderous write out the sentences they are in
(remember your neat joined handwriting) - For the words emerge, broadened,
feeble and participant use the text to help you write a sentence explaining the
meaning of the words.
Scan the text to answer the following questions:
1. What does the writer describe as a fact?
2. What simile does the writer use to describe the quiet in chapter 2?
3. What are the colour of Marlon’s eyes?
4. What is a Dare Devil Dive?

Break
Session
2
LO: To identify action, description and dialogue
Watch video clip of Mrs Ottaway reading Chapter 3: News – follow along with the text.
Look at the first few paragraphs of Chapter 3 and for each sentence decide whether it is
action, description or dialogue.
Eg. As I turned the key in the front door – actions
“Now there’s a surprise!” I mouthed silently – dialogue
… I recognised that tone of voice. It burnt like a laser. – description
Write down the order using letters to look for patterns eg. A (action) D (dialogue) De (description)
What do you notice?
Malorie Blackman usually swaps between these to keep the reader interested and use different
ways to share the plot.
Use the following sentences and write a new more interesting paragraph reordering the action
description & dialogue so that it is not altogether, making it a more interesting paragraph.
“Cameron get down here now” bellowed dad. “what’s happened now? I can’t believe
there’s more drama!” “Cam please listen carefully we have something we have to talk to
you about,” mum said softly. Stomping down the stairs my parents could be in no doubt
how I felt. I slumped onto the sofa getting out my phone. Out of the corner of my eye
I could see the wetness that was all that remained of my mum’s previous tears. The air
in the sitting room felt heavy as if it was trying to push me down to the ground.
Outside the rain hammered on the window panes trying to get our attention.
