The Western Ghats are older than the Himalayas. This chain of mountains runs parallel to the

and Gujarat. The Western Ghats influence how much rain falls during the monsoon season. The

Ghats act as a barrier and intercept the rain-laden monsoon winds coming from the southwest

during late summer. As a result, the region experiences high levels of rainfall. The area is also

Yesterday, I found a book about life in the past. It stated that 200 years ago, there was no

electricity and mobile phones. I wondered how people lived without these basic necessities!

    How

did they keep track of each other? Did they go to sleep as soon as it got dark? I planned to find

out as much as I can. History, after all, was my favourite subject. I asked my friend if she

would help me research more about this subject. She agreed! After the research, I prepared a

list of all the things that we have but people in the past did not. It helped me understand the

difference between my life and the life of people 200 years ago.

    4. Long Answer Questions:

    (a) Indian rulers and princes were unhappy with the British because the British were

exploiting the farmers, traders and rulers of princely states. The British passed a law

according to which if a ruler died without leaving a male heir, his territory would go into the

British hands. The Indian rulers and princes felt that this law was unfair and unjust.

    (b) In 1857, a massive revolt broke out after Indian soldiers serving in the British army

refused to use a new rifle which had greased cartridges. When loading the cartridge in the

rifle, soldiers had to bite its one end with their mouth. There were rumours that the grease

used on the cartridge was made from the fat of cows or pigs. This was against the religious

sentiments of both Hindu and Muslim soldiers. So, they refused to use these rifles and

    revolted.

    (c) Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Jyotirao Phule, Swami Vivekananda

and Swami Dayanand Saraswati are the names of the reformers who contributed towards

India‘s struggle for freedom. They, along with other reformers worked towards improving

the status of women. They also encouraged widow remarriages and education of girls. They

strongly protested against practices like sati, female infanticide, child marriage and caste

    system.

    5. Beyond the text (HOTS Question):

Ans. Indians felt that the British were exploiting their resources because of the following

    reasons:

    (i) The British passed new laws and policies due to which the farmers were made to pay high

taxes. As a result, they lost their lands since they could not pay such high taxes.

(iii) Machine-made cloth from British industries was sold in Indian markets at cheaper rates.

It made many Indian craftsmen and weaver lose their jobs.

(iv) The British did not allow the Indians to open mills and factories.
