CHARACTER DESCRIPTION IDEAS

Read a character description and look how a character description is written using the how to write a character description sheet.

Choose a character from their favourite book/film/cartoon and build up a profile of them using the ‘inside out sheet’ The children write words to describe the characters personality on the inside of the body and words to describe the characters ap-pearance around the outside of the body (The children are familiar with this ap-proach). They could then use this sheet to write a character profile of their chosen character using their chosen vocabulary.

Complete the above activity choosing a Viking God/Goddess or Egyptian God/Goddess

As well as writing paragraphs the children could present their character descriptions in a variety of different ways. For example: they could create a WANTED poster or Top Trump cards.

To develop descriptive vocabulary the children could create their own ‘Guess Who’ game where the children invent and draw their own characters. They could be fairy tale char-acters/cartoon characters/Egyptian Gods/Goddesses/Viking Gods/Goddesses

SETTING DESCRIPTION IDEAS

Read a setting description and look how a setting description is written using the how to write a setting description sheet.

Watch a clip from a film that they enjoy and write a description of where it is set. For example: Watch ‘The Jungle book’. Stop the film and describe the setting.

Simply look out of the window and describe what they can see.

Choose a favourite photograph or picture and use them as a stimulus to write setting descriptions.

Create their own magical setting. Describe it and draw a picture.

AS ALWAYS...

Encourage the children to use a variety of sentence types (examples are attached) and a wide range of vocabulary (specific vocabulary mats are attached) in their writing.

Encourage the children to periodically check their work and look for ways to improve it.

Focus on handwriting and the correct letter formation following the example attached.

Maths

After the last home learning pack explaining what we had focussed on during the Autumn term the Maths focus this time is going to be more detailed ideas for addition Please click on the following link for our school calculation policies on addi-tion and subtraction. http://www.malinbridgeprimary.co.uk/maths/

Addition Make some digit cards numbers 0— 9 -First make a 3 digit number from your digit cards. Partition the number and add the values together eg 528 = 500 + 20 + 8 Next partition the number in different ways 528 = 200 + 320 + 8 528 = 100 + 400 + 114 + 14 Do this as many ways as you can . Challenge—Do the same activity with a 4 digit num-ber. -Number Bonds Write down the number bonds for the number 20, 50 , 75 and 100. Can you do this systematically? Eg 20 + 0, 19 + 1, 18 + 2 Challenge—How quick can you do this? Time yourself. -Number line addition Draw number lines to solve the following calculations. Remember when you are using a number line you put the largest number first and then partition the smallest number and then add the amounts on the number line. 62 + 235 = 235 + 60 + 2 = 297 +60 +2 ____________________________ 235 295 297 27 + 83 = 52 + 112 = 74 + 43 = 175 + 54 = 256 + 125 = 245 + 181 = 362 + 113 = 275 + 128 = 467 + 176 = 564 + 263 = 543 + 321 = 1652 + 1035 = 2531 + 172 = 672 + 1217 = 3051 + 1904 = Challenge—Use your digit cards to make 2, 3, and 4 digit numbers that you can add together on a number line. . Place value counters-Make some place value counters (9 ones, 9 tens and 9 hundreds) Turn them over so that you can not see them .Pick 3 and write the number choose another 3 and write the number, add the amounts together.

Below is the link to see the Gareth Metcalfe maths challenge videos. These are brilliant just make sure you do them in the right order because he gives the answers away for previous challenges in the videos. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfyh0qIIwTEV8ktNRI0x5-g/videos

In school, we do the daily 10 to practise multiplication tables. There are loads of levels of challenge for the daily 10 and the children will love showing you their skills. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10 Another website that the children enjoy learning maths is hit the button. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

There are lots of free, extended challenges on following website that the children can work through. Some of them are really tough so make sure that you choose the appropriate level: https://nrich.maths.org/10334

Of course one of the best resources that the children should definitely take advantage of is Maths Shed. The children love this and are brilliant at it too. https://www.edshed.com/en-gb/login?return_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mathshed.com%2F

Column Addition

There are lots of different stages to column addition. The first stage is when you do not have to regroup. Then the next stage is when you have to regroup ( That is why it is important to miss a line just in case you need to regroup. ) The final stage is to work out the missing numbers in the different columns.

Remember to line your numbers up carefully when you are carrying out column addition otherwise you are likely to get the incorrect answer. 134 + 22 =

A) 1 3 4 B) 1 3 4 A is set out incorrectly which means you will get the answer

+ 2 2 + 2 2 354. B is set out correctly and you will get the answer 156.

You need to use your digit cards and practise column addition. Start with adding to-gether two 2 digit numbers, move onto adding a 2 digit and a 3 digit number together before adding 3 and 4 digit numbers together. To challenge yourself you could add three numbers together. ( 145 + 256 + 231, Set it out as column addition )

Column Addition Reasoning Explain why each example is incorrect. (Think about how you line up the numbers!)

PE

https://www.youtube.com/user/CosmicKidsYoga

Cosmic Kids Yoga is a brilliant website. Mr Lewis has been doing a lot of yoga at home because he is old and needs to stretch his ageing muscles out! He also finds it very relaxing and a great way to start the day. This channel has loads of great videos for you to join in with. Give them a go and let Mr Lewis know what you think!

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMr-d2PLsO95ydptpBnsxdQNSKc9iUNU0

Another great Youtube channel is Kidz Bop there are loads of guided dances to do here which are great for breaks in your other work. If you lose concentration or focus, don’t worry, have a dance for 5 minutes then get back to it!

It’s time to challenge yourselves. Find some equipment from around the house - this can be anything : pots and pans, books, toys furniture and build yourself an obstacle course! Make sure you ask permission first and it would probably be better to do it in the garden if you’re lucky enough to have one!

Finally, I’ve included a daily challenge sheet for you which not only helps with your fitness but also helps you to practise maths! Have a go and let me know your high score!

Identify and underline the expanded noun phase in the text.

The snarling dragon shot from the huge cave and flapped his mighty wings in the cold, misty air. It roared fearsomely and speared downwards into the picturesque luscious

valley below that was full of swaying corn. The hungry dragon began to burn the precious, golden crops of the poor village people. He wilted the green stalks with a

fierce inferno that began in his enormous, carnivorous jaws.

Use your expanded noun phrases to write 5 sentences to describe what is happening in the picture. Your sentences must include an expanded noun phrase with two adjectives, a verb and an adverb.

Example: The large, heavy bathtub floated quickly through the water.

Challenge: include more than one expanded noun phrase in your sentence.

Example: Suddenly, the large bathtub quickly floated across the crystal, clear water.

Add two adjec-tives at the start of each noun phrase to make it into an expanded noun phrase.

Now Write:

Noun phrase

The bath

The girl

The turtle

The day

The water

Thinking time challenge

The adjectives in expanded noun phrases can change the meaning on the noun.

Example: The crystal, clear water.

The murky, swampy water.

Change the adjectives in your 5 expanded noun phrases to change their meaning.
