a word or two

Page 3: Home-Dzine online · glittering for entertaining and kiddies parties! Home-Dzineonline 5 easy! simply elegant Transform plain champagne glasses into an elegant candleholder arrangement

With my two children almost grown up and getting ready to leave the nest, I’ve decided that this year is going to be different.

It’s out with red and in with the colours of summer. This Christmas my table is going to be green and silver!

take a break from tradition

have a colourful ChristmasEvery year I have

gone with the traditional colours of red, green and white for my Christmas table and decorations, but this year I felt like doing something different. It could be that I walked into Home Comforts and was blown away by the colours of their window display, or the fact that this could be the last Christmas that the family will be together before the kids fly off to unknowndestinations.

Having done some research on having an un-traditional table setting, I am amazed at how many people choose to be different for the holidays.

A well decorated Christmas table sets the mood for celebration, whether you are dining with family or entertaining friends.

Home Decor shops, such as Home Comforts, are displaying accessories in a rainbow of shiny colours. Chargers, plates, glasses, and linen in almost any colour you can think of. Dress up a plain table with colourful tablecloths - or make your own (see next page) and then add metallic beaded mats, shiny chargers - all topped off with a white dinner service and plenty of colourful Christmas

baubles. Or be more elegant with copper, silver or gold candleholders and flickeringcandlelight.

And don’t forget the centrepiece - the most important

part of any Christmas table!

So, if you’re feeling like a change this year, pop into your local Home Comforts and take a look at their collection of glittering accessories for your Christmas table.

For those who prefer to remain traditional over the festive season, Home Comforts has a dazzling display of your favourite decorative ornaments and table accessories.

All you need to create this arrangement is a can of Krylon Looking Glass spray and three tall glasses of different heights.

Follow the instructions on the can to apply the reflective finish to yourglasses, turn upside down and affix the candles with a blob ofPrestik.

Add sparkle to your glasses for the holiday table, or use them as candle holders.

Use a craft knife to cut out your shapes on clear, self-adhesive paper. Peel off the backing and stick the self-adhesive paper onto your glass.

Lightly spray Krylon Brushed Metallic over the cut out. Spray in a well-ventilated room and follow the instructions on the can. You may need to apply a second coat once the firstcoat is dry.

Decorate three small Christmas trees and sit them on top of colourful wooden gift boxes for a jack-in-the-box element of surprise. Decorate the trees with a mixture of oversized decorative balls and smaller silver ornaments to keep the room sparkling.

LEFT: Give your tree a rainbow effect by organizing bulbs in sections along the tree. Here shades of yellow, pink, and blue create the desired effect. Connect the colours by adding a tree topper and skirt that uses all the colours on the tree.

RIGHT: This tree shimmers with handmade ball ornaments covered in metallic or iridescent sequins or glitter designs, all in icy pastel colours.

Christmas rainbowNot sure how to decorate your Christmas tree this year? Here are some colourful ideas for a rainbow of colour in the home.

LEFT: Who says presents are only meant to go under the tree? With these simple gift-box ornaments, there are plenty of presents to go around. For an extra surprise on Christmas morning, use one of the ornaments for a small gift.

Cookies spelling out your children’s name along with animal cookies are a sweet treat to add to the Christmas tree.

Use a basic gingerbread for biscuit recipe to create the shapes.

Or why not create the ultimate edible Christmas tree!

A tree decked with oversized gingerbread people and cranberry balls creates an even cheerier Christmas season.

RIGHT: Featuring richly coloured fruit and bird ornaments, this tree will stand regally in your living room.

made with loveStart a family tradition and let the whole family get involved in making decorations for trimming the tree.

You don’t need to be an expert at sewing to create these wonderful felt ornaments, in fact you could use fabric glue if you don’t want to do any sewing! We have included patterns on the back page to make the project as easy as possible.

As a substitute for felt you can also use fleece, or any otherfabric scraps that you may have lying around.

You will need:Felt, fleece or other fabricNeedle and thread or,Fabric glueSequins, buttons and beadsThread to hang the ornamentsThin batting for padding

Here’s how:1. Use the patterns on the back

page to cut out your shapes with sharp scissors.

2. Arrange each ornament before gluing so that you know what to sew or glue first.

3. Remember to include the thread for hanging your ornaments on the tree.

1. Collect greenery such as eucalyptus, oak, rosemary, and even fern fronds.

2. Cut greenery snippets about 30cm long, then gather them into 10 to 12 small but full bunches.

3. Wrap the stem ends of each bundle tightly with padded bag ties (used for sandwich and freezer bags).

4. In this project a clamp ring was used to hold the greenery, but you can achieve the same effect with a wire ring and cut lengths of thin wire. Secure one bunch at a time, closing the clamp (or wire) over stem ends with your hands or a pair of pliers.

5. Continue attaching greenery, one bunch at a time, to the ring, moving in one direction around the circle. Each bundle should slightly overlap the previous one.

6. Attach ribbon or raffia for hanging the wreath.

Adding colourIf you prefer to add colourful foliage to your festive wreath, complete the wreath as described above and attach wire to your choice of flowers, berries or decorations to insertinto the foliage.

If you’re bored by a plain boxy room, take heart. You don’t have to rip apart walls and ceilings to make the space more inviting, better lit and more dramatic. The simple soffit project we show here will do all that. A soffitis a dropped section of ceiling that’s usually positioned along the walls. It creates a multi-height ceiling, which in itself adds a visual feature. But even better, it offers a perfect home for lighting - general lighting for the room as a whole and recessed lights for practical uses like illuminating closets and reading, as well as for highlighting artwork and display shelves.

If you’ve successfully tackled any simple carpentry project, such as building a deck or installing shelves, you’re more than qualifiedto handle this project. Most of the project is just a matter of cutting planks and plywood to length and screwing them into place.

Here’s how:1. The first step is to draw up a wiring plan and have an electrician

put everything into position so that you can simply attach the lights. Ask the electrician to leave an extra 50cm of cable spare.

2. Use a Bosch PDO Detector to find any ceiling framing. Ontwo sides of the room, ceiling framing will run perpendicular to the walls, and on the opposite sides it will run parallel. Mark the framing locations with chalk lines and pencil marks as shown in Photo 1. Lay out the soffit framing by snappinga chalk line around the perimeter of the room 600mm away from the wall where the joists are perpendicular and 570mm away where the joists are parallel.

3. Screw 50 x 50mm timber along the line that is perpendicular to the joists, and 560mm blocking at a right angle to the line that is parallel to the joists. Use 75mm screws.

romantic nights

Page 20: Home-Dzine online · glittering for entertaining and kiddies parties! Home-Dzineonline 5 easy! simply elegant Transform plain champagne glasses into an elegant candleholder arrangement

4. Nail 50 x 50mm timber to ends of 50 x 100mm blocks. Then snap a chalk line on the wall 200mm down from the ceiling and nail 50 x 100mm timber ledgers into the wall with steel brads.

5. Cut 200mm facing strips from 16mm plywood (one from each sheet). Level the bottoms even with the ledger and screw them to the 50 x 50mm timber with 50mm screws.

6. Clamp 50 x 50mm timber flush with the bottom of the facingand fasten the plywood to them with screws. Span plywood joints to make them solid.

7. Position wiring. Cut holes for switch boxes, feed in cable and run it to all the light locations. Leave extra cable at each light.

8. String a line along the bottom inside edge of the 50 x 50mm timber and cut 50 x 100mm “lookouts” spaced every 600mm Keep them at least 150mm away from light locations. Mount a duplex box just above the 50 x 50mm timber in the soffit facing.

9. Cut 200mm strips of 12mm drywall and screw to the soffit facingwith tapered edges facing down. Trim off overhanging edges.

10. Cut 16mm plywood to 720mm wide and screw it to the framing. Orient the plywood with the factory edge facing the room.

11. Centre 180mm square holes at each recessed light with outer edge even with the 50 x 50mm timber. Drill 12mm starter holes and cut out each hole with a jigsaw.

12. Clamp and screw a 25 x 50mm nailer flush with plywood lip.Make sure to overlap plywood seams by at least 300mm.

13. Screw 12mm drywall to the underside of the soffit, leaving a5mm gap against the wall. Trim outer edge flush with plywood.

14. Mark the exact centre of each recessed light 450mm from the wall. Position the light template and trace the fixture opening.Cut the opening with a saw.

15. Slip the fixed flange of tear-away edging behind the drywalland staple it into place. Fill the edging with taping compound. Tape the butt joints and fill over screwheads. Peel the tear-awayflanges free, then sand and paint.

16. Wire each recessed light following the manufacturer’s instructions. Slip them into the openings and anchor them with locking flanges.

17. Cut the ceiling trim and nail it into place. Then nail a 25 x 100mm board flush with the top of the 25 x 50mm. Finally, add the trimon the back of the 25 x 100mm boards.

18. Install the switch boxes and hook up the light switches. Then install the bulbs and recessed light trim rings.

19. Install the switched receptacle for the rope lights. Assemble enough rope light length to fill the soffit perimeter. Then plug it inand lay it into the trough.

In this age of longer work weeks and information overload, we all need a place that we can claim as our own private sanctuary. Any outdoor deck, patio or lawn can be the perfect place to create a personal refuge from the world.

Armed with your creativity, inexpensive accessories and a few cans of Krylon spray paint, you can customise your space to match your dreams.

This plain patio was transformed into an outdoorspace that invites you to pull up a chair and relax.

The key to any paint project is surface preparation. If you start with a smooth, cleansurface, you will get very good results. Don’t try to cut corners and save time by not sanding wood or removing dirt. To remove dirt, ordinary household detergent or mineral spirits usually do the job. Make sure surface is thoroughly dry before starting to paint or prime. Always use a basecoat or primer on bare wood, or when dramatically changing colour.

Spray Painting Tips

When working with woodSand smooth with 120- to 180-grit sandpaper. Wipe clean with a cloth to remove dust. Spray with any Krylon® primer or a basecoat of Satin Cloud to hide wood grain if desired.

When working with metalRemove loose rust with a wire brush, sandpaper or chemical rust remover. Remove oil with a degreaser or denatured alcohol. With Outdoor Space paints a primer is not necessary on metal because the paint provides maximum protection against rust and corrosion.

When working with glass or ceramicLightly sand with fine grain sandpaper so thatsurface will not be slick - this allows paint to adhere better. Wipe clean. Shake the can for two full minutes once you hear the mixing ball begin to rattle. Repeat for 10 seconds after each minute of use.

For solid coverage, spray across your project in a sweeping motion. Repeat, overlapping the paint by approximately one third. Keep a constant distance from the item being painted. Always begin and finish spraying offof your project, releasing the spray button at the end of each pass.

DIY Tip:It’s a good idea to test your spraying techniques on a piece of scrap material before beginning a project. Test a small area for compatibility by spraying the paint on an inconspicuous part of the project to evaluate the finish.

Take your time. Use several (2-3) light coats instead of one thick coat, which may result in runs and drips. Check directions and be aware of recoat windows, which indicate when additional coats can be applied.

Outdoor SpacesTM Satin Finish dries quickly to a smooth, contemporary finish. The coordinatedcolour palette of classic and accent colours makes it easy to choose colours to suit any decorating style. The Comfort TouchTM spray tip provides easy application.

Krylon products are available countrywide through Builders Warehouse, Builders Express, Mica, Jacks Paint, Kings Paint, DIY Depot, and

Arts & Crafts and Scrapbooking Stores.

Q zoneSend your Q & A for decor, decorating and DIY dilemmas to [email protected].

Q. SamanthaThank you for the choice of paint, it is perfect.

What I need to do now is to add cornice the top of the room, but I do not need the wooden one but the décor ones (You just spray with the paint and remove).

Any ideas…

A. JaniceI think that you are referring to a stencilled effect that you want to add around the top of the room. You can buy ready-made stencils for this purpose, or you can make your own with a sheet of plastic and a craft knife. Get some Bostik Sprayable Adhesive to hold the stencil against the wall whilst you apply the spray paint. Only apply a very light spraying as you don’t want the stencil to stand out too much. Alternatively, use polyfilla mixed with a littlecoloured paint to the consistency of thick cream and apply with a paintbrush. In this way the stencilled effect will stand out more.

Q. AmandaREALLY hoping you might be able to help me or point me in the right direction.

About 2 years ago we did fairly extensive renovations to our house. I was 7 months pregnant at the time and decided that we HAD to have carpets. So pulled up all the tiling and laid carpets. I chose stainproof ones, so not too bad....BUT I was adamant the only colour that would be suitable is a very light beige....yes you read right! I blame the raging pregnancy hormones.

Now with a very active toddler 2 large dogs you can just imagine the state of the carpets. It cost us a fortune laying them so pulling them up is not an option. Is it possible to dye carpets?

Thanks so much for your great newsletter and website and I look forward to your response.

A. JaniceOooops! Believe it or not I have tried dyeing a carpet AND spray painting a carpet - both of which were a total disaster! We don’t yet have any products in SA that can be used to spray fabric or synthetics on a permanent basis, and I have been informed that even the products that are available overseas leave a lot to be desired. The carpet becomes stiff. I tried to use a dye but the problem was getting it to fix and notwash out. I hate to say it... but I think you need to start saving for new carpets or a new flooringoption!
