THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Wednesday, 12 March, 2008 7

Independence is defined sovereign power.Sovereignty is complete power of the people or thepower to serve the interests of the entire people. If thesovereign power of a country falls under colonialists, the people of the country will be enslaved. If so, thecolonialists will take control of the sovereign poweror the legislative, executive and judicial powers ofthe country and will promulgate the laws designed tooppress their colony. And they will exploit the countryat will and exercise the administrative (bureaucratic)machinery to make the people live in dire poverty. Inaddition, they will try to prolong their colonial rulethrough suppressive laws.

Myanmar fell under the yoke of Britishcolonialists for over 100 years. Throughout the periodof over 100 years, Myanmar people were risingagainst the colonialists to regain the independence. In other words, it took over 100 years for Myanmarpeople to regain their sovereign power, risking livesand limb.

After regaining independence, for nearly half acentury, Myanmar had to withstand a wide range ofstresses and strains triggered by the armed struggleline the insurgents took at the instigation of aliensand due to doubts, dogmatism, sectarianism, intransigence of the party concerned, and personalitycult. During the period, the people lived in a state ofpanic, let alone enjoying the taste of independence, whereas those vying one another in groups and inparties of different policies for power were in practiceof armed insurrection with great relish. The colonialistcountries were very pleased to note that the insurgentswere troubling the people instead of working inharness with the people for national developmentwith the use of expressive geographical features andrich natural resources. The more Myanmar peoplesuffered from havoc and plights, the colonialistcountries were pleased more.

The Anti-Fascist People’s Freedom League(AFPFL) government practised the ParliamentaryDemocracy System from 1948 to 1962. The AFPFLgovernment split into two factions—Stable AFPFLand Clean AFPFL. Moreover, the Socialist Partysplit into three factions, Communist Party, fivefactions, and Pyithu Yebaw (PVO), two factions. So, national solidarity built in the time ofindependence struggles became disintegrated. Inthe past, they shared national outlook andmanaged to help the nation regain independence

again. However, sticking to various forms of politicaldogmatism, they took respective trends that couldmake the nation lose independence. So, theTatmadaw in perpetual service of national interestsand the people had to safeguard the motherland formany times for ensuring non-disintegration of theUnion and perpetuation of sovereignty(independence).

Since 18 September 1988 on which it took up Stateduties, the Tatmadaw has devoted itself to formidabletasks for restoration of peace and stability, nationalreconsolidation and all-round development of thenation. In the meantime, it took measures to introducethe multi-party system to the nation. From 1988 to1989, altogether 235 political parties, leftist and rightist, got registered. To form a political party, it just neededa group of ten people, each of whom would contribute50 kyats, and they just had to get registered. Over 200of the 235 registered parties had no specific partypolicy, party principles or party strength.

Some persons representing 93 parties stood forelection at the multi-party democracy general electionsin May 1990, and the remaining parties became defunct. The parties, whose representatives were not elected, also became defunct, thus reducing the number to only10 after the elections. It was exposed that three or fourparties were composed of aboveground (UG)representatives planted by the BCP from the jungles. So, the Multi-party General Election Commission hadto abrogate those parties.

In the US, Republican Party and Democratic Partyorganizing small parties compete with each other forpower and come to power on the basis of electionvictory. The two major parties are slightly differentfrom each other in procedures but they pursue thecommon goal.

In Britain, Conservative Party and Labour Partyare major rivals. Liberal is the opposition party. All theparties were given birth by the British capitalism(colonialism). Both the US and the Britain possess afine tradition: they use force to suppress all forms ofmovements to secede from them. They never tolerateany movements to break up or secede from them. Theyremain indifferent if a handful of people hold protests. However, a large number of people stage massdemonstrations strongly, they effectively suppress thedemonstrations. They allow demonstrations staged bya small number of people, with the intention of deceivingthe other countries.

Each of the two countries allow two partiespursuing common goals to exist. They never allowany parts to secede from the Union. They use force ifdemonstrations become strong. However, they aidand abet parts of other Union countries to secede. And they recognize the break-away parts immediately. If the protesters become anarchic and violent and thegovernment concerned had to use force, they accusethe government of violation of democratic rights, human rights and freedom. Copying the old methodsof the British that it annexed other countries afterweakening them first through opium trade plans, theneo-colonialists destroy the patriotic spirit andnationalistic fervour of the youth of their targetedcountries. They also emasculate the revolutionarystrength of those countries, and deceive anti-government people and use them for the expatriateplans to devastate the countries.

Assessing such plans, patriotic forces and nationalforces of every country have become vigilant againstthe political snares set by the colonialists. Every countryhas to strengthen the military, economic and nationalforces and serve the interests of the people concerned.Myanmar has managed to avert being caught in thepolitical traps of the colonialists, stand firmly on itsown feet, and restore peace and stability for twodecades, braving a wide range of destructive acts.

Implementation of national development projectscalls for huge funds, and nation-building tasks cannotbe carried out effectively so long as peace and stabilityhas not been restored. Despite the subversive acts andeconomic sanctions by internal and external elements, the government managed to build internal peace andconstruct a large number of bridges, roads, railroads, schools, universities, colleges, hospitals, industrialzones and irrigation facilities on self-reliant basisthroughout the nation. The magnificent progress of thenation is largely due to the hard work the entire peopleof more than 56 million have exerted in harmony.

Making effective use of the fruitful resultsthanks to the harmonious work, the entire peoplewill have to build a peaceful, modern and developeddiscipline-flourishing democratic nation. They willhave to do their bit in the processes for timelyemergence of a constitution essential for transitionto democracy.

We people favour peaceful coexistence withthe other world people. We have never doneanything harmful to the interests of any othercountry. We consider that some are trying toharm the interests of our country merely due totheir lack of knowledge of our country’s culture, customs and traditions.

In the past, our country was not in a positionto shape its brighter future. It is believed thatunlike that, now our country has a prosperousfuture ahead of it.

Magnitude 5.5 quake hits Chile,no damage reported

SANTIAGO, 11 March — A 5.5 magnitudeearthquake shook northern Chile on Monday, but therewere no immediate reports of injuries or damages.

The epicentre of the quake was 94 miles (152kilometres) southeast of Copiapo at a depth of 53.6 miles(86 kilometres), the US Geological Survey said. Copiapo, about 500 miles (800 kilometres) north of Santiago, isthe capital of a province of the same name.

“There have been no reports of personal or materialdamages,” Chile’s National Emergency Office said in astatement.

Chile is the world’s biggest copper producer andmost of its mines are in its northern region. Howevernone of the major copper mines are located in theimmediate vicinity of Copiapo. — MNA/Reuters

Promising cancer drug may endanger child’s bonesWASHINGTON, 11 March — A compound that looked promising for treating

a brain tumour found mostly in children may damage growing bone — possiblymaking it too dangerous to use in young patients, researchers reported onMonday.

SEOUL, 11 March —The man intended to be thefirst South Korean in spacehas been grounded forviolating security protocoland will be replaced by afemale biotechnologyengineer, the ScienceMinistry said on Monday.

Ko San, 31, wasdropped from the top pickfor the April 2008 flight ona Russian Soyuz spacecraftand is now the backup forthe mission after he

removed sensitive trainingmaterial from a Russiancentre, the ministry said.

“The Russians em-phasized the importance ofabiding by the rules, as evensmall mistakes can bringabout grave consequencesin space,” an offical told anews conference, addingKo appeared to have madeinnocent mistakes.

Ko, a technologyresearcher and a bronzemedal winner in a 2004national amateur boxingcontest, is being replacedby Yi So-yeon, 29, who isfinishing her doctorate.

Yi will serve as apayload specialist with twoRussian cosmonauts for aseven or eight-day missionto the International SpaceStation, the ministry said. The two were selected froma list of more than 36,000candidates.

The drug fullyeradicated medullobla-stoma tumours in mice in2004. But further testingshowed it caused perman-ent bone damage inimmature mice, TomCurran of The Children’sHospital of Philadelphiaand colleagues found.

Writing in the journalCancer Cell, they said thedrug, known by itsexperimental nameHhAntag, will need to bedeveloped with caution.

And, they said, similardrugs will need carefultesting.

HhAntag, made byCalifornia-based Genen-tech, affects a gene calledHedgehog, involved inboth normal developmentand in cancer.

It is a so-called signaltransduction inhibitor,designed to interrupt Hedg-ehog’s cancer-causingeffects.

Several such drugs arecurrently in pediatric clini-

cal trials.“While it is not clear

that the bone defects weobserved in mice would alsooccur in children, and whilesignal transductioninhibitors may still representa highly promisingapproach to treatingpediatric cancer, it may beimportant to performpreclinical testing in younganimals before movingahead to clinical trials,”Curran said in a state-ment.— MNA/Reuters
